~ Boragus' message to Kilgor. |
Winston Boragus, also known as Duke Boragus and King Boragus, is a recurring character in the video game Heroes of Might and Magic III, having a major role in several campaigns. He is the ogre ruler of the nation of Krewlod.
Biography[]
As a young man, Boragus achieved notoriety by single-handedly slaying his village's chieftain to gain power. Through his brutality and quick wit, he quickly united other tribes under him. He participated in the Festival of Life contest that would determine the new leader of Krewlod, easily emerging as the winner. Eventually, many came to respect Boragus and consider him one of the greatest rulers Krewlod has ever known. Boragus also fathered several sons, including Jabarkas, and adopted a daughter named Gundula.
Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death[]
Duke Winston Boragus constantly recruited soldiers from foreign nations into his army. Presumably, he would subject difficult trials to every one of his recruits. Through this, he became famed for having amassed such a formidable army. One such mercenary that Boragus invited was the Bracadan half-Human and half-Genie man Yog. After Yog's escape from Bracada, Boragus turned all of his forces against him to test his worthiness. Yog defeated them and traveled to Ulgak, the capital of Krewlod, where he confronted Boragus about the deception. Yog was at first angry until Boragus pointed out that it was Yog who wanted to be a fighter. After that, Boragus sent him on a mission to distribute the pieces of the Angelic Alliance artifact as a test to see if he was truly ready to join the army. Yog was successful, so the Duke welcomed him into his army.
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Restoration of Erathia[]
After King Gryphonheart's death, Duke Boragus took the opportunity to increase the size of his kingdom into Erathian land, beginning with financing an offensive on Erathia, hiring a mercenary who would plunder enough gold from raiding Erathia. As a result, he came into conflict with King Tralossk of Tatalia, who also wanted to expand his country's borders. The border war was eventually quelled by combined forces of Erathia and Bracada, led by Queen Catherine and Gavin Magnus, after which Boragus withdrew his troops.
Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade[]
During the next Festival of Life, four contenders challenged King Boragus for the throne. Among them, the Barbarian warrior Kilgor proved to be the most capable, defeating all three of the rival clans. Nevertheless, Boragus was still confident in his skills as a warrior and leader. Though he slightly respected Kilgor and accepted the challenge, he sent him taunting messages to lower his confidence, such as attempting to coerce him into committing suicide. In the end, Boragus was defeated in strategy and combat by Kilgor, who then beheaded him. His severed head was displayed as a trophy in his old throne room like a bust, as Kilgor took his place as the new ruler of Krewlod.
Personality[]
Boragus was a quick-witted and opportunistic ruler, willing to take advantage of every moment to further his goals of power and conquest. Because of his desire for conquest, he was especially selective in recruiting warriors into his army. He had a special kinship with the ogres he commanded, which has helped him far in his quest for power. Boragus had great confidence in his leadership and warrior abilities, even when his status as King was threatened by the would-be tyrant Kilgor, which ultimately led to his defeat and death. However, he still respected his troops, such as Yog, as well as Kilgor to some degree.
