The Winter King is the titular main antagonist of the Max adult animated series Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake episode "The Winter King".
He is an alternate version of the Ice King who was able to remove the Ice Crown's curse and build a paradise known as the Winter Kingdom with his ice powers. However, unbeknownst to everyone, the Winter King did this by transferring the curse to this universe's Princess Bubblegum, turning her into the Candy Queen.
He was voiced by Brian David Gilbert as the Winter King, and Tom Kenny as Simon.
History[]
Much like his counterpart, this version of Simon Petrikov ended up putting on the Ice Crown, resulting in him losing his sanity. However, around 100 years ago, through an unknown spell, he was able to transfer the curse and madness of the crown into Princess Bubblegum's brain, transforming her into the Candy Queen and ruining her entire kingdom. With his sanity now restored, Simon became the Winter King and began to construct the Winter Kingdom. Basically, he and Candy Queen were swapped roles of Ice King and Princess Bubblegum.
Plot[]
When Fionna, Cake and Simon entered his dimension, pursued by Scarab, the Winter King saved them by freezing their enemy. They explained that they wanted Simon to get his powers back so that magic could be restored to Fionna and Cake's dimension, so the Winter King came up with a solution. He said that he'd make a duplicate of the crown. Before doing that, he helped Fionna by giving her her own sword.
He stated that it would take a week to finish duplicating the crown, so he told the others to explore the Winter Kingdom. However, when Cake said she wanted to explore the Candy Kingdom, the Winter King told her that it was forbidden, since it was too dangerous. When the Winter King took Simon to his laboratory, his counterpart asked him if their was a version of Betty in this universe. The Winter King simply laughed at his response and said that she had been dead for a long time and he hardly ever thought about her. He then said that Simon could make an ice version of her, before claiming that he was just kidding. Before they could do anything else, the Candy Queen attacked the kingdom and kidnapped both the Winter King and Simon.
Winter King ages to death
The Candy Queen trapped them both, and the Winter King explained that she's done this countless times. The Candy Queen then explained that she planned to throw them into a blender with her, so they would all be fused together forever, something that shocked the Winter King. As she prepared to throw them in, Simon tried to convince the Winter King that she needed help, but his counterpart dismissed that idea. When Fionna and Cake came to rescue them, Simon tried to tell her that something was wrong with the Candy Queen's brain and they had to help her, but the Winter King convinced her to attack C. Q. instead. After Fionna freed them, she and the Winter King kissed. However, the crown suddenly lost its magic as a result of this, causing the Winter King to age rapidly before turning to dust. After this, the Winter Kingdom began to slowly melt away and the Candy Queen transformed back into Princess Bubblegum, who celebrated finally being released from the curse. Upon hearing this, Simon put the pieces to together realized what Winter King had been doing. He apologized to P. B. for his fellow Simon's behavior but admits that he does feel vindicated.
Appearance[]
The Winter King possess similarities to both of his previous selves, Simon Petrikov and the Ice King.
Personality[]
The Winter King is shown to possess traits of both Simon and the Ice King. He had Simon's intellect along with some of the Ice King's goofier traits. His personality was shown to be extravagant and flamboyant, with him having occasionally expressed himself through song and dance.
Initially, the Winter King presented himself as a friendly individual, showing kindness and being open toward helping others in need which may have been in some capacity genuine. However, this hid the darker aspects of his character. In secret, the Winter King appeared to be motivated by selfishness and/or cowardice, lacking a large part of Simon's morals. He was willing to run away from and/or dump his own problems onto others at their expense. He appeared to have no qualms with transferring his madness onto Princess Bubblegum despite the fact that this had turned her into a maniacal lunatic. It also seemed that he did not wish to remember neither Betty or Marceline, though he still kept the guitar of the latter around with an ice version of her to play it.
The Winter King appeared to be narcissistic as well, focused on maintaining his good image while hiding his more negative traits and the misdeeds he committed. He grew nervous when people became suspicious and would attempt to cover it up.
