The Witch is the overarching antagonist of the Prince of Persia franchise. She is a mysterious old hag with a unknown past, she is the leader of the armies of darkness who destroyed the kingdom of Basra along with it's people and the King and Queen, all except for the Prince, who is destined to avenge the deaths of his family and his kingdom and defeat the witch. She is also worships the Serpent God, where she marks the s symbol on the walls all over the kingdom of Basra.

Overview[]

Jorden Mechner (The creator of the Prince of Persia games) has revealed a little bit of her backstory and that she was going to play a large role in a planned sequel to Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame as the main antagonist, but the game ended up scrapped. In the follow up game, Prince of Persia 3D, which was released six years later, the witch is only mentioned in the manual which stated her involvement in the second game and that she was preparing to get rid of him, but that the Prince's battle with the witch would be another story.

Personality[]

It is unknown what her personality is, as she only appeared in the end of the game, but design documents indicates she is a ruthless and thoroughly evil person. It is mentioned she worships an evil serpent deity and that his S emblem is emblazoned on her forehead. She has no problem with killing an entire city's worth of people, including children, then desecrating the dead afterwards and cursing them to roam the ruins in agony as restless demonic spirits.

Biography[]

Not much is known of her past life, she first assisted a young nobleman to destroy the kingdom of Basra and its people. The Witch, the nobleman and the armies of darkness invaded and destroyed Basra, killing the inhabitants, children included, as well as The King and the queen of basra. Though the young prince survived the destruction and escaped due to his mother's help, he had no memory of his royal family or the city.

After the destruction of Basra, The Witch allowed the Nobleman proclaimed himself as the ruler of the kingdom. The Witch revived the heads of the dead people to roam in the city for the rest of eternity. When Nobleman tried to take the magical horse for his own, the horse turns into a statue. He forces the witch to activate it, the witch took one look at the horse, and realizes that the horse Is too powerful for her and was not able to turn it back.

Some days later, She allied herself with Jaffar and gave his magical powers. She would revive him after his first death by the Prince. After the second death of Jaffar, The Witch looked through her crystal ball to see the prince and the Princess as the happy couple ride on the magical horse. Now realizing the Prince's destiny, she would realize she needed to come up with a plan to destroy the prince.

Notes[]

  • A popular, but unproven fan theory states she is connected to Assan and Rugnor, the villains of Prince of Persia 3D. In particular, she is often believed to be the origin of Rugnor's status as a human/tiger monster, as the reason for this is unexplained within the game itself.
  • According to Jordan Mechner, it was his choice to not follow up on the Witch's storyline in Prince of Persia 3D as he felt most casual fans would've forgotten the plot point.
