Wolf Haley, also known as just Wolf, is the titular main protagonist of Tyler, The Creator's WOLF Trilogy (alongside the other titular character), being a supporting character in BASTARD and GOBLIN, and the titular protagonist of WOLF. He is also featured as a minor character in Tyler's seventh studio album, CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale.

He is a troubled adolescent who, under the direction of his therapist, Dr. TC, goes to Camp Flog Gnaw, a mental health camp for young adults after the death of his grandma. Here, he meets and falls in love with a young woman named Salem, and makes a mortal rival in her boyfriend, Sam, sparking a gang war between the latter and Wolf's gangs. While Wolf is eventually revealed to be among the many alternate personalities of the trilogy's titular character, Tyler, it's fairly unclear whether Tyler and Wolf are alternate personalities, or if they are one in the same and "Wolf Haley" is just an alias, hence the separate articles.

He's played by Tyler Okonma, who played Tyler, Sam, Ace, The Creator and Tron Cat in the same album trilogy, along with the titular character in IGOR, St. Chroma in Call Me If You Get Lost & Chromokopia and Blitz Commet in Regular Show.

Appearance[]

Wolf is a tall slim African-American man with black hair, big ears, a blue cap with his name on it, a striped shirt and a pair of shorts.

Biography[]

Wolf is sent to Camp Flog Gnaw, a summer camp that doubles as a mental health correctional facility for troubled teens. The camp is likely a result of his emotional struggles after the passing of his grandmother. Upon arrival, he meets Dr. TC, who instructs another camper named Sam to show him around. Despite Wolf’s friendly nature, Sam quickly threatens him, warning him to “stay the fuck out of our way,” though he proceeds to give him the tour. During the walk, Sam proudly boasts about his clique, “The Dead Sams.” They are interrupted by Dr. TC, and while Sam insults him, Wolf spots a girl named Salem. Sam warns Wolf to stay away from her, claiming she’s his girlfriend. He then goes on to tell Wolf how he met Salem in the song “Awkward.” The tour eventually concludes. Despite Sam’s initial hostility, Wolf manages to integrate into the camp and even becomes a part of the group, associating with Golf Wang in the song Slater. During the track, Wolf becomes closer to Salem, and the two start riding bikes together through the camp. Wolf’s attraction to her grows stronger, and his feelings are cemented. At the end of Slater, he proudly shows off his bike to Frank Ocean, only to be ridiculed and called a loser.

While Sam leaves camp to go on a drug run in PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer, Wolf and Salem are left behind. They sit around a campfire, with Wolf feeling proud of his Camp Flog Gnaw badge. He laughs and eats s’mores with his friends, enjoying the moment and deciding he doesn’t want to leave the camp. Wolf’s attention shifts to Salem, and he compares her to his BMW, describing their intimate experience in detail. His feelings for her intensify. The two then take a quiet date by the camp’s lake, but unbeknownst to them, Sam has returned. Sam is told by Lionel/L-Boy that Wolf and Salem have been spending time by the lake together, which enrages him.

Sam spends the night in emotional turmoil, torn between love and anger for Salem. Meanwhile, Wolf and Salem continue their date by the lake, where Wolf questions why Sam is so cruel. Salem dismisses him as a “dork” and reveals that Sam is at the camp because he ran away from home after committing a school shooting in which he killed all his bullies. This backstory is referenced in the song “Pigs.” Sam eventually decides that despite Salem’s infidelity, he still loves her and directs his rage toward Wolf, vowing to kill him as revenge.

Sam begins his hunt for Wolf, even killing Earl Sweatshirt to send a message. Wolf hears the gunshot and becomes increasingly anxious. Sam’s search for Wolf proves fruitless, but he continues to look for him, even as the night unfolds. Eventually, Sam is executed by a militia in Sam Is Dead, but Wolf remains unaware of his fate. Back at the lake, Wolf flees and takes refuge in the boys’ cabin, where he begins to masturbate as a way to release the stress and anxiety brought on by Sam’s threats. Clancy unexpectedly stumbles upon him, leaving Wolf embarrassed. Clancy drags him to Dr. TC’s office, where Wolf reluctantly enters another impromptu therapy session. Wolf opens up about his feelings of loneliness and his desire to quit making music. He admits that the death of his grandmother, his first real loss, has left him emotionally frozen and unable to properly process grief. Dr. TC listens and consoles him, offering support. Wolf then confesses that, had he encountered Sam, he would have killed him first.

Personality[]

Wolf Haley embodies a strong sense of rebellion, often challenging authority and societal expectations. This is most evident in his interactions with figures like Sam, His attitude reflects a desire to push boundaries and assert his independence. Beneath his tough exterior, Wolf harbors deep emotional pain, especially stemming from the death of his grandmother. This loss leaves him feeling lost and unable to process grief properly, which leads to feelings of isolation and a lack of direction in life. He struggles with loneliness and a yearning to connect with others, though he often hides this vulnerability behind a mask of aggression or detachment. While Wolf often comes off as brash or wild, he’s also highly introspective. His conversations with Dr. TC reveal a self-awareness that allows him to reflect on his emotions, his place in the world, and the impact of his actions. This introspection allows him to confront his feelings of inadequacy and the complexity of his relationships, particularly with Salem. Wolf’s personality is often at odds with itself. He’s simultaneously attracted to chaos while also seeking stability and connection. He’s drawn to Salem and forms a close bond with her, but his own insecurities and the toxic environment of Camp Flog Gnaw create tension and confusion. This inner conflict is central to his character, making him unpredictable and sometimes volatile.

However despite all this Wolf is also Confrontational, Aggressive, Jealous, Possessive, Cynical, Pessimistic, Self-destructive, Untrusting, and overall a somewhat immature individual. His tendency to push people away is rooted in a deep mistrust of others. His walls are high, and he often isolates himself, even from those who try to help or get close. His inability to fully trust others can prevent him from forming meaningful relationships and keeps him in a state of emotional distance.

Trivia[]

  • On the album cover for WOLF, Wolf's hat is actually photoshopped to say "WOLF", whereas in reality the hat said "GOLF". This was likely because Tyler only had the GOLF hat and couldn't be bothered to get a completely identical hat with one letter changed.
    • Tyler actually would eventually get a hat that read "WOLF" for the next album, CHERRY BOMB, but it looked different and by that point Tyler wasn't really playing any sort of character.
