Princess Diana of Themyscira, also known as Wonder Woman, is the secondary antagonist of DC Comics's Injustice franchise.
She is the right hand of Superman's One-Earth Government Regime and also his replacement love interest following Lois Lane's death (even though Deathstroke condescendingly refers to her as Superman's "rebound girl" to mock her).
In contrast to mainstream Wonder Woman, this version of Diana was a vengeful, barbaric, sadistic, bloodthirsty, arrogant hypocrite who, even before the creation of the Regime, expressed delight in Superman's shift to a more militant worldview and fully supported it, refusing to ever let him doubt himself. Furthermore, by supporting his worldview, she ended up corrupting him into something far worse.
She was voiced by Susan Eisenberg, who also voiced previous Wonder Woman incarnations, such as in the Justice League animated series, Justice League Unlimited, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, DC Universe Online and Justice League: Doom. In the animated film, she was voiced by Janet Varney.
Biography[]
Injustice: Gods Among Us[]
Wonder Woman serves as a right hand for Superman's One-Earth Government Regime, as well as Superman's replacement love interest following Lois Lane's death. Deathstroke condescendingly refers to her as Superman's "rebound girl". In contrast to mainstream Wonder Woman, this version of Diana was more open to a militaristic, explosive approach to reining in the criminal element. At some point in time, she influences her fellow Amazons to become more like her: aggressive and violent, as opposed to how Amazons are normally perceived.
She was eventually defeated by her mainstream counterpart and imprisoned on Themyscira, with the Amazons there having been convinced by mainstream Wonder Woman to reject the violent ways of their corrupt leader. That said, as shown below, there are still those who sided with Diana.
Injustice 2[]
Wonder Woman is saved from her captivity on Themyscira by Damian, Supergirl, and Black Adam, who assist her in fleeing to Kahndaq. From there, the four plot to get revenge on Batman, as well as to save Superman, while Damian returns to his cell to wait for his three allies to come for him and both Superman and Cyborg. They get the chance to do so once Brainiac's invasion, thanks to his ally, Gorilla Grodd, began soon. To do so, they plan to use the recently awakened Supergirl as their secret weapon.
Prior to Diana's escape from Themyscira with the help of Damian, Kara, and Adam, Nubia becomes a worthy successor of the fallen Diana herself to atone the sins which Diana made her fellow Themyscirans commit. While in her prison, Diana is visited by Ares, who is having fun to see her fallen faces. It turns out some of the Amazonian soldiers, such as Artemis and Antiope, are still loyal to Diana and Superman’s Regime. Thanks to Adam, Damian, and Kara, Diana is freed take her powers and equipment back from Nubia, and escape with her loyal army and Kara.
Along with Adam, and even Damian, they have been lying to Supergirl about the true nature of Superman and his Regime, ever since Batman took the blame and unable to prevent Joker from killing Lois and Superman's unborn child, leading to Superman's descent into madness as the present. However, she did not know that Superman had gone too far, imprisoning Wonder Girl along with the rest of the surviving Titans five years ago, when Superman broke Superboy’s heart and nearly killed him, putting the latter in a dying state. Thus, Diana must ensure to keep on Superman's good side from never gone too far as he did to Shazam.
Once Brainiac and Grodd's menace has begun, the Regime remnants go to rescue Superman, because he may be the only way to counter Brainiac. Superman's cell is guarded by Blue Beetle and Firestorm. The two face the Regime remnants, but fail despite putting up a good fight. A despaired Firestorm decides to blow the prison up despite Diana's warning about him destroying Metropolis, but Batman arrives and stops him. Both Batman's group and the Regime remnants ally to combat Brainiac. Batman tells everyone not to kill anyone, and keep their focus on saving civilians to Diana's dismay.
Diana and Kara go to Metropolis to ensure the safety of the civilians with Diana barely hiding her discontent. While there, they get confronted by several Society Members including Zoom, Cheetah, Cold, and Scarecrow. Upon defeating them despite getting a dose of Crane's Fear Gas, Diana almost kills Cheetah despite Batman's orders only for Harley to stop her. Angered at Harley's role in Metropolis's destruction as well as her comparing her to Joker, Wonder Woman stabs her with Kara defeating her before she could finish her off. She later appears after Superman's supposed demise, blaming Bruce for his death before Kara reminds her of Brainlac still being out there. It is also revealed that Diana told Superman about Kara's betrayal resulting in him warning her that she has to make a choice after she defeats Robin and Adam in combat.
Absolute Justice[]
In the end, Batman and Superman succeed in defeating Brainiac and are joined by all their allies. Superman wants to kill Brainiac to restore the lost cities in the destruction of the brainiac ship while Batman refuses, causing a new conflict and of course Diana sided with Superman. She is beaten by Flash but she is recovering fast enough to continue Kara to the Batcave with Superman. Batman arrives with an improved suit and faces Diana who accuses him of having revived the worst fears of Superman. Batman, in turn, calls her out for starting a war before defeating her. She is then imprisoned again.
Absolute Power[]
In the alternative ending, Superman defeats Batman, Diana asks him why he did not kill him, so Superman replies that he does not want to make him look like a martyr before forcing Kara to join him. Diana asks him what he will do if she doesn't, but Superman assures Diana that he will not give Supergirl the choice.
Arcade Ending[]
“ | When Batman tore down the Regime, man's world called me a tyrant. My Amazon sisters disowned me. Then Brainiac showed me what a tyrant truly looks like. The people begged for deliverance--and I gave them Brainiac's head. Once again, it falls upon the Regime to restore peace and order. Batman and the traitors who followed him will be punished. Even Kara Zor-El. Then I will return to Themyscira-- --and deal with my sisters. If they do not heed my commands, they will bow to force. So says Diana, Princess of the Amazons, slayer of Brainiac! | „ |
~ Wonder Woman's non-canon Arcade Ending. |
In her own (but non-canon) ending, Wonder Woman kills Brainiac by cutting off his head. At this, its unknown of what happened to Braniac's collection of captured worlds, as they were all supposed to be destroyed when Brainiac dies, as he had installed a failsafe where his skull ship will be disabled if Brainiac is ever killed. Apparently indifferent to this, Wonder Woman hoped that Batman and the Insurgents will face trial for their treachery towards the One Earth Regime. She swore that once this was done, she and the Regime will travel to Themyscira and deal with the Amazons who had turned against and renounced their former leader. Wonder Woman vows that if her "sisters" do not heed her commands then she will subjugate them by force.
Personality[]
“ | You're not afraid of Superman, you're afraid you corrupted him. "Brave hero," your worst fear is becoming the villain of the story. | „ |
~ Scarecrow's analysis of Wonder Woman's psychology |
Wonder Woman was similar to her prime world counterpart, however, a difference in her origin created massive repercussions later in life. Steve Trevor in the Injustice universe was in reality a Nazi spy, thus Diana's first experience with humanity was deception and betrayal. Despite this, she was able to become a superhero with the expected nobility, even with her jaded outlook. However, once Joker drugged Superman into killing Lois, and as such their unborn child and setting off a nuke in Metropolis, any semblance of nobility vanished; not only did Diana collaborate with Superman's ruthless shift, she occasionally enabled it.
This Diana is also more lustful in both for power and pleasure, as despite Superman still grieving the death of Lois, she coerced her way into becoming his lover. Even with exploiting Superman for her own satisfactions and hunger for power, she still considered herself a hero, and refused to be criticised; while also refusing to acknowledge that her murderous mentality was the opposite of heroics, rather she held a collection of extreme ideologies, such as the ends justifying the means and might makes right. She may have understood that her actions did appear villainous, thus withheld the truth of them when training Supergirl to help the resurgence of the Regime, though subtly misinforming her to make her a tool of conquest, rather than superhero as promised.
With the mutual threat of Brainiac, relics of the Regime and Batman's heroes unite to defend the Earth; while even Superman, as corrupted as he had become, displayed evidence of his old compassion and capability to work seamlessly with Batman, Diana instead remained hostile towards anyone on Batman's side the entire time, often blaming them for the threat of Brainiac due to the delusion of thinking if the One Earth Regime hadn't been toppled, then the alien conqueror wouldn't be a threat. While others like Damian and Black Adam similarly sniped at their situational allies, Diana was the one who continued to stir dissent in preparation of their inevitable betrayal their side would undertake when Brainiac was defeated.
Despite her malevolence, she holds some still objectively decent traits of her mainstream counterpart, such as leadership, bravery, and fortitude. Although, perhaps even these don't qualify as positives, since she leads Themiscrya into cruel conquest, is fearless due to enjoying inflicting suffering, and strong-willed in the sense of being stubborn against all logic that condemned her adherence to Superman's lack of mercy and totalitarianism.
Trivia[]
- In the animated filmography adaptation, Wonder Woman first follows Superman until she finds out he's slaughtered teens idolizing the Joker, which disgusts and horrifies her. In the end, she turns on him when he decides to hypocritically arrest Batman's team after they help them defeat Amazo. Thus, the film version retains a sense of her character's usual sense of morality and compassion, as she opposes the oppression and murder Superman enacts, whereas the game version encourages it. She also displayed romantic interest in Superman, but when he rejects her due to not being over Lois's death, she respects it, and doesn't express such interest again.
- An Injustice prequel issue about this Wonder Woman's origin, reveals that Diana turned evil when the Steve Trevor of her universe used her own kindness to cause harm, as it turned out he was a Nazi spy. Enraged by this betrayal, Wonder Woman killed Trevor, vowing never again to let empathy be a weakness.
- Wonder Woman is often considered to be worse than Superman by fans, as in the comics, she'd often gaslight and manipulate Superman into becoming a worse person.
- Scarecrow even notes that she isn't afraid of Superman, but deep down is afraid that she corrupted him, albeit her conscious mind rejects this insight.
- She and Batman use different names from Superman's real identities. Batman refers to him as Clark, whereas she calls him Kal; Batman uses his human name in remembrance of his old heroic, but also human identity, while Wonder Woman uses Kal, not to respect his Kryptonian heritage, but as a subtle way to manipulate his thinking away from feeling human, thus reinforcing his god complex.
- She has a twisted sense of humor, calling her sword the Anti-Life Equation when facing Darkseid in a match.
