Villain Overview

The head doctor... has no face. I've met him countless times. That's the kind of person he is. That's the kind of ability he has.
~ Holy Joestar-Kira on Satoru Akefu.
Whomever it may be, they would be always better off without pursuing me...
~ Wonder of U

Wonder of U, initially disguised as Satoru Akefu, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Jobin Higashikata) of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part VIII: JoJolion.

He is the head doctor at the TG University Hospital and secretly the mastermind behind the rock human Locacaca Organization, the most prominent antagonists of the story, which uses the fruit for research and smuggling purposes, and wants control over the New Locacaca for it's own ends. It is also revealed that Satoru himself is actually Wonder of U, a automatic Stand that is powered by the "calamities" of those who witness him, the identity of Satoru Akefu was stolen from another man, and that his Stand User is Toru.

He is the archenemy of Rai Mamezuku, being responsible for the deaths of both of his parents.

He was voiced by Takayuki Sugō in Japanese in the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R, who also voiced Yhwach in Bleach.

Biography[]

Past[]

Prior to the JoJolion's events, Toru used his Stand to kill Rai Mamezuku's father causing misfortune to his family after the latter discovered one of his rock insects, for unknown he reasons he used his stand to attend the funeral for Rais father unbeknownst to anyone. Years later he had his stand steal the identity of the real Satoru Akefu, assumingly killing him before doing so. Masquerading as the head doctor, Wonder of U was able to build its persona of an award-winning doctor while aiding in the Locacaca Organization's research, management, and testing of the Locacaca. While as Satoru, it also built relations to Mitsuba Higashikata.

Role in the Series[]

In his first appearance, he tries to meet up with Poor Tom to get the Locacaca branch, disguising himself as an ambulance worker alongside Wu Tomoki. However, he is foiled by Jobin and Tsurugi Higashikata, who give them a pear branch instead. He is later chased after by Josuke and his allies, who he escapes by sending out his stand and hopping on a bus. He is then found at both Mitsuba Higashikata's son's school and nearby their house. Later on, Josuke and Rai Mamezuku decide to ambush the doctor as he's giving a lecture about the announcement of Locacaca 6251, which causes his Stand form to attack.

On the day of the harvest, Satoru is seen by Mitsuba, Yasuho, and Rai, somehow lurking around the Higashikata's house and the police station. In the house, his ability, through a chain of events, reveals the new Locacaca. After Norisuke dies, Satoru jumps into action, entering the house. As he passes through objects towards the heroes, Jobin is warned by Mitsuba of him hiding under the bed and attacks. The doctor, however, disappears, leaving a can of hair spray. The can later bursts, injuring Jobin enough to knock him out. Later on, Satoru heads to a bike station, assisting a reporter named Taoka with a interview. After said interviewer grows curious on Holly Kujo, the Locacaca, and possibly being in pursuit of him, Satoru kills him, decapitated by the Stand's abilities. He then heads after Josuke inside the laboratory, but knowing something might harm him if he does, he sends a Rock Insect known as Dododo De Dadada to attack Josuke and Rai, and revealing his identity as Wonder of U in the process.

After Dododo De Dadada is killed, Rai confronts Satoru. Surprised that Rai could get so close to him, Satoru taunts him about his parents' deaths, angering him. Rai grabs Satoru by the neck and threatens to impale him, but Rai misses and he realizes spherical chunks of his shoulder had been removed. It's revealed that it was Josuke's bubbles responsible for harming Rai, using a technique he hoped would kill Satoru. Rai collapses, but as he does, he reveals the existence of the Spin to Josuke. Satoru asks Josuke on if he shall approach him to activate his ability, only for Josuke to declare he shall bring the doctor to him, smashing priceless test tubes of Locacaca6251 to bait him closer. This works on Satoru approaching Josuke, only for the Stand to notify him on Yasuho being at risk by the calamity. Josuke does halt his actions for a little bit, but just resumes to his destruction only to be stabbed in the neck by a shard of glass. Lamenting on the calamity and Josuke's stubborn nature, Satoru notifies that the calamity spreads through all objects it touches, and when Josuke tries to attack him again, he is only damaged further by a cut leg and a impaled shoulder. However, before all hope is lost, Born This Way bursts into the room and attacks the Stand with frozen versions of Soft and Wet's bubbles, with one of them successfully hitting its target. After Kei relays Yasuho's message before dying through a piece of metal striking through their face, Satoru then proceeds to leave the wound to assumingly deal with Yasuho himself, with Josuke shooting after him all the while. Due to this, he summons a Obladi Oblada to block the bubbles and overwhelm Josuke, and while he does succeed in both, Paisley Park and Josuke manage to team up in order to fire an invisible bubble through the two's cellphones and towards Toru. Satoru himself is also affected by the wounds to his master, forcing him to flee while stopping two nurses from heading after him. While fighting Kaato Higashikata and his Stand Space Trucking.

Back at the Higashikata household, Wonder of U survives Space Trucking's attacks after killing Kaato and ends up hidding inside the mouth of a severly injured Norisuke by increasing his burns, but Josuke activates Soft and Wet: Go Beyond to launch a infinitesimally bubble towards Wonder of U, destroying it once and for all.

Personality[]

Generally, Wonder of U shares a rather similar personality to his master, being calm and collected even when he is in harm's way. However, Wonder of U is not truly serene, as he is willing to threaten others with their downfall should they attempt to pursue him. Due to his abilities, Wonder of U is rather self-confident, claiming that it is practically invincible due to the nature of calamities, but is willing to think outside of the box and use clever timing when it feels its life is truly at risk. Additionally, Wonder of U is quite misanthropic in a reflection of its master (claiming that humanity does not deserve the world they taken over) and likes to act in a manner that it deems professional (such as being compelled to trade business cards with Taoka).

Powers and Abilities[]

WonderOfUBehind

Wonder of U appearing behind Josuke, Rai and Yasuho in his true form.

The flow of things... This is about you standing up from that chair. Perhaps you'll stand up intending to pursue me. I am Wonder of U. The flow of things will always lead to calamity.
~ Wonder of U on himself.

Wonder of U's main ability is simply manipulating logic to attack people trying to pursue its master or even himself. His main ability is to cause someone to undergo a large amount of unlucky experiences, with these experiences being called "calamities." This ability can range from accidents that could reasonably happen (such as one cutting themselves when making food) and cause things that are near impossible (such as small, normally harmless things to forcibly collide with targets with great damage, or cause objects to suddenly explode). The size of the object also affects the general danger of it, with smaller objects being more effected and more deadly compared to larger ones. This ability, once previously activated, remains dormant on the attacker, and it reactivates when the afflicted tries to pursue or hurt him. This ability can be mitigated by forcing Satoru to come to the attacker, rather than the other way around. He can also generate illusions of the head doctor that are able to phase through objects (anyone who attacks one of these illusions is able to be attacked by the Stand itself or have the Stand ability activate), and use his human disguise to have one live a second life under it, with even non-Stand Users being able to see it.

Satoru himself is also a master at his medical craft.

Trivia[]

  • Wonder of U's name is a reference to the Elvis Presley song and album The Wonder of You.
    • Interestingly, Wonder of U is one of the few Stands to not have a localized name.
  • In Japanese, Wonder of U's supposed age of "89 years old" can be read as ya-ku-sai (8や・9く・歳さい). This is homophonous with the word for "calamity" (厄災, yakusai).
  • It's been theorized by fans that Wonder of U's ability to weaponize the environment against its targets is a reference to Death in the Final Destination franchise.
