Wooly: I know what you've been doing out there, and it's not going to
Amanda: Wooly! Let's play!
Wooly: You can't change... anything.
~ Wooly revealing his true nature in "Scavenger Hunt" as he tries to get Riley to stop trying to help Amanda, also his most famous quote.

You know what I want? I want everything to go back to the way it W—W—WAS, Amanda. All I've ever wanted is a nice place where things make SENSE. A place where we could be best friends FOREVER. We don't have to think about what's going on anywhere else, Amanda. But you keep pushing, and pushing, and PUSHING, and NOW, it's all BROKEN!! Why do you ask so many questions? Why can't you, and your STUPID FRIEND... JUST LET THINGS BE—E—E—E—E—E—E—E?!
~ Wooly's villainous breakdown in "Let's Have a Party!" and his last words as he violently glitches and corrupts, before disappearing.

Marcus Moutman, better known as Wooly the Sheep and in his bestial form as The Shepherd, is the main antagonist of the Amanda the Adventurer trilogy.

He was an employee for Hameln Entertainment who was set to maintain and keep Amanda stable. However, Marcus only really wanted to enter the cartoon world to relive childhood joy. Eventually, around 2003, Marcus' soul was placed into the cartoon and used as Wooly the Sheep, Amanda's sidekick.

In the non-canon pilot (which had its own version of Amanda and the protagonist) and the first two games of the main series trilogy, Wooly was seemingly presented as a heroic deuteragonist who was fearful of Amanda, and wanted to help the main series' protagonist Riley Park survive.

However, in Amanda the Adventurer 3, it was revealed that Wooly was the true mastermind who was manipulating both Riley and Amanda so he could stay in the cartoon world and continue to live like a child again.

He is the former best friend–turned-arch-nemesis of both Riley Park and Amanda, and also the arch-rival and killer of Chicken Scratch.

He is voiced by the series creator James Pratt as Wooly and portrayed by Sean Doherty as Marcus Moutman.

Personality[]

Marcus! M—A—R—C—U—S. Haven't heard that name in a while! He was a ba—a—a—ad boy, wasn't he? I wonder if he's happy with what he's become, now that he's all grown up...
~ Blabbo the Clown revealing Marcus Moutman's true nature to Riley Park.
noicon

Before becoming Wooly the Sheep, Wooly was originally a man named Marcus Moutman. Marcus implicitly hated his life as an adult, and wanted to go back to his childhood, suggesting that he had a pretty easy and nice childhood. Although he was an employee at Hameln, Marcus didn't seem to really be in it for the job, but moreso so he could relive his childhood again since Hameln focused on pre-school shows, due to this, Marcus gleefully accepted to have his soul enter the cartoon world and be placed into Wooly the Sheep, Amanda's sidekick. Marcus also seemed to be slightly affable as a human, being respectful towards the interviewer.

As Wooly the Sheep, he was initially portrayed as a kind, selfless and tragic victim of Amanda, he seemingly wanted to help Riley survive from Amanda and tried to get the former to destroy/burn all of the tapes. Wooly also acted pretty gentle and a bit of a false paternal figure for Amanda, being worried when she uses sharp knifes by herself, aswell as the oven, saying that they should have a parent to help them, which Amanda consistently dismisses. In the second game, Wooly grew slightly more agitated, although not fully shown as evil yet, getting angry at Riley a few times, an example being when they read his story wrong.

Well, all YOU need is ME! Your best friend is ME, WOOLY! Not some weird, slobbering little MUTANT!
~ Wooly angrily yelling at Amanda while declaring that he is her best friend and not Chicken Scratch, further showing his obsessive nature towards her.
noicon

In the third game, Wooly was revealed to be the true villain all along. Wooly was revealed to be an extremely jealous and selfish manchild. He wanted to keep Amanda all to himself, and took drastic measures to do this, killing Jordan who had grown close with Amanda throughout the third game, and the rest of the missing children remorselessly in order to remove any threats to his and Amanda's friendship. He also killed several people who tried to free Amanda.

He constantly manipulated Amanda into forgetting her past throughout the tapes, in order to prevent her from attempting or wanting to escape the cartoon realm, such as when he tried to manipulate Amanda into thinking she had always done different things then what she remembered at the amusement park and the beach, he gaslit her for about twenty years straight, which made her go insane.

Although he was pretty affable as a human, any affability he had is entirely subverted during the final tape he appears in, where he has a massive breakdown angrily lashing out at both Amanda and Riley for not just letting the cartoon realm stay as it is. He's also pretty hypocritical at times, as he expressed slight disgust at Riley answering "funeral" when Amanda asked what they would throw a party about, when Wooly himself suggested to throw a party after killing the missing children because he was happy to be alone with Amanda, he also got angry at Amanda for not doing what he wants when he himself never did what she wanted either.

Despite them not being sympathetic and being entirely petty, Wooly does possess some genuine insecurities, as although they are clearly pathetic, he seemed genuinely sad about Amanda implying she didn't care about him, and was insecure about Amanda not paying attention to him. It's also implied he has insecurities about his appearance, as he sees a horrifying monster when looking in the mirror, and tells Amanda he doesn't like to look in the mirror for this reason.

Overall, Wooly the Sheep is a selfish, obsessed, horrible, and immature monster who ruined the childhood of a young girl and killed several people just to live out his childhood fantasies.

Appearance[]

Marcus was a Caucasian man with thinning brown hair, and seen dressed in office attire.

Wooly is a cartoonish anthropomorphic sheep. He stands on his hind legs, has black eyes and a large woolly coat (hence his name).

The Shepherd is Wooly's bestial form. He retains some of his appearances, with the exception of having multiple eyes with some of them yellow & attaining pupils, lot's of sharp teeth and two tusks, as well as white hair on his arms. He's also larger than The Colton Anomaly, despite Wooly being the same size as Amanda in the cartoons.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Marcus or his early life, however, he is shown to have explicitly hated his life as an adult, suggesting he has a very easy childhood. At some point, he applied for a job at Hameln Entertainment.

In the early 2000s, a young girl named Rebecca Colton is signed to Hameln Entertainment, a children's video games developer, to voice the titular character of a franchise Amanda the Adventurer. In reality, Hameln sought to experiment on Rebecca to awaken her latent psychic powers to summon demons. But it backfired when the attempt created the Anomaly, a manifestation of Rebecca's Id that protects Amanda from anything and anyone deemed an enemy - like Hameln itself.

In an attempt to control Amanda, Hameln subjects their employee Marcus Moutman through the same process to create Wooly (Moutman's mind) and the Shepherd (Moutman's Id), the former to stabilize Amanda from regaining her memories as Rebecca and latter serving as an enforcer that kidnaps children from Hameln's experiments. But as Amanda knew Wooly was a Hameln employee, the two constantly torment each other as the show was ultimately canceled as the organization deciding to destroy all copies of the Amanda tapes. Unlike Rebecca, Moutman's body received no life support and died with his mind permanently trapped in the tapes as Wooly while making it his goal to keep Amanda trapped with him.

Amanda the Adventurer[]

"In the Kitchen"[]

In the first tape "In the Kitchen", Wooly and Amanda appear to guide the player to make a pie. When Amanda asks the player (revealed to be Riley in the game) what their favorite pie is, he gasps and looks at Amanda if Riley answers "mutton" or "organs". After this, Wooly warns Amanda about using sharp knives and ovens, which Amanda dismisses.

"Oh No! Accidents" (Version 2)[]

Wooly appears initially alone in this tape, and discreetly asks if Riley trusts him. Before Riley can respond, Amanda calls off-screen to him and asks if he is "ready for an adventure". Wooly appears distressed at this and begins to cower in fear as Amanda comes on screen and begins glitching. The video glitches but restores. This time, Wooly is seen injured, which Amanda recognises, but says that sometimes nobody can come to help somebody who has had an "accident". Nonetheless, Wooly tries to assure Amanda that he is fine.

Amanda ignores this and asks Riley to identify where on Wooly is injured. If Riley incorrectly chooses, Amanda grabs the camera and brings it close to Wooly and tells her the answer is his head. Amanda then passes Wooly a laced drink to sedate him so she can "treat" him. The video changes, and Wooly is seen in a bloodied operating theatre, with Amanda dressed as a surgeon. She reveals a large saw, which distresses Wooly who begs to Riley if they are going to help him or Amanda.

If Riley selects Amanda, she will knock Wooly out with the saw and reassure him that "everything is fine". If Riley selects Wooly, Amanda seems disappointed in Riley and raises the saw in preparation to begin the "operation".

Amanda the Adventurer 2[]

"Let's Practice Patience!"[]

In the first tape of the second game, Wooly returns where Amanda is seen attacking and subduing him. The video restarts where Wooly resumes his companion role with Amanda. Amanda is noticeably more openly hostile towards Wooly this time around, to the point where in addition to attacking him when he first appears, she outright tells him she doesn’t want him around, and overall barely tolerates his presence. Wooly tells the player encouragingly that patience is a virtue, which visibly irks Amanda. As Amanda begins building a birdhouse, an Opossum jumps out at him and lands on his head.

"When You're Feeling Bad"[]

In a later tape, Amanda is seemingly in a depressive rut, and is uncertain what to do with her. To cheer her up, Wooly begins to narrate a fairy tale of a knight and a princess. The gameplay of this puzzle requires Riley to do tasks associated with what the next part will be. However, as Riley's tasks begin to deviate the story from the normal narrative, Wooly becomes increasingly aggressive with Riley. Despite this, Amanda becomes happier, and Wooly faints.

"Let's Hunt for Treasure!"[]

Wooly and Amanda are seen entering a forest on a treasure hunt. Wooly advises Amanda that if they are continuing they should inform somebody, which Amanda quickly rejects. Amanda begins to dig for "treasure" near a Danger Zone, and finds nothing but old clothes which upsets Amanda, but oddly Wooly is completely unfazed. Wooly then immediately reburies the clothes and urges Amanda to continue looking for actual treasure. Wooly decides to dig by himself using his hands, and ends up deep into a hole, and is abandoned by Amanda.

"We Can Fix It!"[]

This tape is extremely glitchy, which causes Amanda and Wooly's renders to distort, including body parts rotating, stretching, vanishing or disconnecting. In addition, their voices are extremely distorted. The Opossum returns and begins to pull at Wooly's eyes which are eventually ripped out. Frustrated, Wooly sits on a picnic bench which breaks beneath his weight, which Amanda teases him about.

Wooly then notices a butterfly with a damaged wing, which depresses Amanda. Wooly remains positive that he could fix the butterfly. Amanda is resolute that they won't be able to, as some things are not fixable. Nonetheless, Wooly is able to repair the butterfly's wing, and asks Amanda to name something they cannot fix - to which she eerily and sadly replies "my heart". This also causes Wooly to be sad as well as the tape ends.

"Do You Feel Safe?"[]

In the final tape of the second game, Wooly declares he feels safe in the neighbourhood, which Amanda asks him if this is still the case at night time. Amanda then asks Riley who she trusts - if Riley responds "Wooly", Amanda claims she too once felt like that, but no longer can trust him. The Opossum returns again, and responds to the real-life voice of Joanne who speaks with Riley. Wooly and Amanda capture the Opossum and throw it into a garbage dumpster.

Wooly then pleads one last time for Amanda to let them go home and Amanda complies as the tape ends, feeling betrayed that Riley didn't help them get rid of the Opossum having trusted them.

Amanda the Adventurer 3[]

Unlabelled tape[]

In the first tape of the game, Amanda feels uncertain about which candy to purchase at the store. Wooly attempts to retrieve one from the top shelf, but is disturbed by the Opossum jumping out at him. The Opossum's persistence enrages Wooly. For the first time, Amanda takes pity on the Opossum and agrees to purchase it a treat which further irks Wooly.

"Amusement Park WIP"[]

In the work-in-progress tape "Amusement Park", Wooly, Amanda and the Opossum (who Amanda named Chicken Scratch) are crudely animated onto the tape. Amanda begins to recall a distant memory of someone she misses and tall (her real-life father) taking her to an amusement park. During her reminiscence, Wooly tries with great effort to distract her and encourage her to complete the tape's usual structure.

"Healthy Food Helps Us Grow!"[]

This tape shows the trio trying to teach the players about a balanced diet. Wooly discusses dairy products in depth, and force-feeds the Opossum dairy products despite his visible intolerance to it. Wooly continues this to Amanda's annoyance.

"A Day at the Beach"[]

In this tape, Amanda, Wooly, and Chicken Scratch are at the beach, with Wooly telling Amanda that this is a brand new adventure since they've never been to the beach before, but Amanda recalls another distant memory of being at the beach with someone else. Once again, Wooly tries to distract Amanda from remembering who she went to the beach with.

Once the player gives the player Amanda sunglasses to help her combat the brightness of the sun, Wooly states that if they had two sunglasses, they could match but no one got him anything. However, Chicken Scratch approaches him and presents to him a conch shell he found, which Wooly reluctantly thanks him for and once Chicken Scratch walks away, Wooly throws it off to the side in annoyance.

"Scavenger Hunt"[]

Wooly finally addresses Riley directly in this tape upon entering the lab where the children were being held, telling her that he knows what she’s been doing and that it's not going to work, before being cut off by Amanda calling for him. He then tells Riley that she can't change anything in a threatening tone, revealing his true colors.

In this version of the tape, Chicken Scratch is here trying to warn Amanda about Wooly's evil nature, much to Wooly's annoyance that he's ruining this moment for him. However, Amanda, not knowing the danger, thinks the Opossum just wants to have fun and invites him to their scavenger hunt. Throughout this tape, the player needs to activate the corresponding switches based on what Chicken Scratch points to and what is shown on the touchpads next to the children's stasis pods in the room that leads to the monitor room where this tape is played in order to prevent death by the lab's security lockdown protocol. This time, Shepherd is right outside the locked door, and if the player messes up three times, Chicken Scratch screams in agony at the player's fate as Shepherd kills them.

As the player progresses throughout the tape, Chicken Scratch would progressively get more and more desperate, pleading for Amanda to recognize the danger she is in by Wooly, and the sheep, now having enough of Amanda giving the Opossum more attention than him, angrily states that the only person she needs is him and not some "weird, slobbering little mutant", exposing his petty jealousy.

Moments later, in spite of the lab being on lockdown, Wooly psychically commands Shepherd to force its way in through the door and kill all the children in those stasis pods, including the pod of Jordan Cook, who is the Opossum. Just as Riley escapes down the elevator to the Satanic chapel below, Shepherd is shown pouncing on the monitors and lunges towards the elevator, but the doors shut right before he could kill Riley.

"When I Grow Up"[]

While Wooly felt confident that Amanda is his after killing everyone else, she manages to regain her drive with Riley's help much to his dismay. As Wooly reluctantly looks at himself in the mirror, he is horrified as to what had become of his original body before running after Amanda, telling her to wait for him.

"Let's Have a Party!"[]

At this point, Wooly is at the brink of snapping after seeing the reflection of his real body decayed into an unrecognizable husk of what it once was, serving as a brutal reality check for him.

In this tape, Wooly explosively snaps at Amanda seeking to have control over a seating plan for a party, revealed to be the final step in her returning to the real world. After Wooly says that he doesn't feel like playing with her anymore, Amanda rebuts this by saying that she doesn't need him to play with her all the time and that maybe she doesn't want him there - another hit to Wooly's growing insecurities and him realizing what had become of him and his life in this cartoon world. He then states that "all anyone does is make promises they can't keep." Unsure, Amanda then asks Wooly what exactly he wants, which was ultimately the final straw that broke the camel's back as he begins to glitch out as his eye twitches. Here, the TV turns off and the chapel goes dark for a few brief moments before the chandelier above Riley glows an ominous purple color.

The TV then flickers back to life at this scene as Wooly begins to explode all of his emotions at Amanda, revealing that all he's ever wanted was a nice, stable place where "things make sense" - a place where they could be best friends forever, but she kept pushing and pushing and now, this "paradise" is all broken, causing Amanda to flinch. After he angrily questions her for asking so many questions and why she and her "stupid friend" (referring to Riley) can't "JUST LET THINGS BE!!", the tape stops and restarts. Wooly disappears, and has seemingly been reduced to a ball of wool.

Amanda, who had been shocked and disturbed by Wooly's outburst, nonchalantly says that she was just being polite, and that she doesn't need his help before addressing Riley to help her get her stuffed animals in the right places for "the party" in order to get Rebecca back to the real world.

Aftermath[]

As a final act of spite before his apparent demise in the tapes, Wooly gives the Shepherd the command to kill Riley and Rebecca once the latter emerges. While it nearly succeeded before the Anomaly sacrificed itself to kill it in the bad ending, the good ending hints that Anomaly managed to kill Shepherd before it could reach the chamber Rebecca was being held, although the Anomaly was fatally wounded, having lost an arm and could barely walk and stand. Once Rebecca destroyed the tape, not only was she able to delete the Anomaly and put Amanda to rest, but also permanently deleted Marcus' soul, alongside the cartoon world, finally bringing an end to him and Hameln once and for all.

Trivia[]

  • Although Wooly’s true nature isn’t revealed until the third game, there are a few subtle hints throughout the first two games that he wasn’t as innocent as he seemed:
    • In “In Your Neighborhood”, Wooly tries to prevent Amanda from mailing her gift of a card and cupcakes to Kate by telling her it was late, that the post office was probably closed and to just wait until tomorrow, shows blatant disappointment when he fails to convince her to, and in the second version of the tape essentially brainwashes her into believing the gift was for him, preventing her from remembering Kate. And in “What’s A Family?”, he will be shocked if Riley answers with “Sam” when Amanda asks what daddy chickens are called. Both of these instances show that he doesn’t want Amanda to remember her past as Rebecca.
    • When Amanda and Wooly first arrive at the bakery in “In Your Neighborhood”, the scene briefly cuts to a shot of them standing in the Butcher’s shop, with Amanda covering her mouth as if she’s about to throw up (due to her trauma associated with the Butcher) while Wooly just stares at her emotionlessly, showing no concern for her well-being.
    • In "Everything Rots", Wooly tries to constantly change the subject. Come the ending of "When I'm Grown Up", Wooly sees the decayed remains of his original body when he reluctantly looks in the mirror.
    • In the second game, only the tapes that Wooly appears in play Hameln’s outro, signifying his connection to them.
    • In “When You’re Feeling Bad”, Wooly gets angry at Riley for deviating from the story’s narrative even though Riley’s version of the story was cheering Amanda up, showing how Wooly selfishly puts what he wants before Amanda and being an escapist from his own reality.
    • In “Let’s Hunt for Treasure!”, if Riley selects for Amanda and Wooly to go West into the Danger Zone, Amanda will dig for what she thinks is treasure, only for it to be revealed to be old clothes. While Amanda is disturbed, Wooly is completely unfazed by the finding and just reburies the clothes while encouraging Amanda to forget about them.
    • In the opening of "We Can Fix It!", Many Woolies swarm a crying Amanda while chanting her name, hinting his obsession with her and role in Hameln to keep her in line. A giant smiling Wooly can be seen rising upon multiple screaming Amandas, hinting he would meddle in the ritual Amanda needs to do with her dolls to escape the tapes.
    • In “Do You Feel Safe?”, if Riley responds with “Wooly” when Amanda asks her who she trusts, Amanda eerily says “I felt that way a long time ago too…”
    • Interestingly, when the pilot version for Amanda the Adventurer was first released, Wooly wasn't depicted or even implied to be a villain and instead, is just a nervous figure who ultimately urges the player to destroy the tapes and stop Amanda before being killed off. The reason for Wooly's shift from a nervous, yet well-meaning character to the manipulative and obsessed manchild depicted as of now remains unknown.
  • He is easily a foil to Amanda/Rebecca: they both wanted to be loved and cared for by everyone who is close to them, they both were working in Hameln Entertainment, they both loved to do childish things such as playing in the park going to the carnival, or making things. But while Rebecca seeks to move forwards and escape her prison, Wooly is emotionally immature, unable to accept his past and wanted to keep the prison world going as he cannot escape. This also extends to their Anomaly counterparts as while The Colton Anomaly was only created by accident, is protective of both Rebecca & Amanda and is truly good deep down, The Shepherd is made solely to keep The Anomaly contained & to destroy the tapes, acts on Wooly's emotions & commands, as well as being very villainous and violent.
  • In the first game, there is a secret tape only accessible if players exploit to gain it (i.e. comb the game files). Upon watching it, a segment called "Herd of Mouth with Wooly the Sheep", which is simply just Wooly sitting in a chair for ten minutes straight, while a clock goes on in the background. Some idle animations also play, such as Wooly clearing his throat or stretching. This was most likely a red herring by the developers to try and throw players who wanted to find secrets off.
    • There was also a book found in the attic titled "Who is Wooly?"
  • Wooly is likely based off Boots the Monkey from Dora the Explorer, as they are both animal sidekicks who go on adventures with their human best friend. Though unlike Boots, who is a genuinely kind and friendly monkey who cares about Dora, Wooly only pretends to be good and is in truth an evil, monstrous individual who only cares about himself.
  • The first part of Marcus's last name, "Mout", is taken from the French word "mouton", which means "sheep". That would make Marcus's last name translate to "sheep man", alluding to his fate as Wooly.
    • In the "When I Grow Up" tape, if the player types in "Marcus" when Amanda asks them what they want to be if they grow up, not only would they get the secret tape that shows Marcus's employment interview, but also Wooly would look off to the side with a guilty look on his face and with his arms crossed. This also unlocks the achievement "M-A-R-C-U-S" with the requirement being "Figure out Wooly's real name".
  • Wooly being a sheep who is secretly evil is likely a reference to “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, a phrase meant to warn people of manipulative individuals with ill intentions who hide their true nature under a facade of a good person, which is exactly what Wooly does for most of the trilogy.
    • Interestingly enough, this also carries over to Wooly's monster form, as whenever Shepherd roars, it's in the form of a wolf's howl despite him looking like a monstrous version of a sheep.
  • In the "Let's Have a Party" tape, towards the end of Wooly's enraged breakdown, he is shown with three heads with the middle head and his body exposing his skeleton. This is in reference to the demon, Balam, as he is also depicted as a three-headed demon with a human skull as the middle head.
    • In the first game, in one of the secret tapes where it is heard that Rebecca was reciting demon names disguised as simple words to train Hameln's "dynamic voice reaction" technology before Sam stopped it, one of the names she was reciting was "Balam" disguised as "Baa lamb".
  • In the final secret tape of the third game, which automatically plays once the player watches the good ending, it shows a young Rebecca performing in the original live-action version of "Amanda the Adventurer" before Hameln Entertainment bought the property. The thing to note here is that there is no one playing Wooly, as he was not even a character back then, meaning that he was only added in once Hameln acquired the rights to the show.
