| ~ World Eater warcry. |
The World Eaters are major antagonists in Warhammer 40k, serving along the Black Legion as one of the two primary enemy factions within the Chaos Marines. Originally the 8th Legion the War Hounds, their primary purpose in service to the Emperor of Mankind was to be pure, unrestrained destroyers. When the War Hounds were assigned to a battlefield, death and destruction were the only outcomes. Lead by their Primarch Angron, they brought countless victories to the Imperium of Man, but this all began to take a severe toll on them. Following in the footsteps of their father, the Astartes imbued themselves with the dreaded Butcher's Nails, and became a nigh psychotic engine of rage and bloodshed. Renamed the World Eaters due to Angron's vision for his Legion, they sided with Horus in his Heresy, and from that point onward became one of the most barbaric and evil forces in the universe and the favored warriors of Khorne. Following the Horus Heresy, the World Eaters Legion was shattered into a number of nomadic Khornate Berzerker warbands, and while the Legion technically no longer existed, Angron would periodically reorganize them into something resembling their former cohesive force.
Once the War Hounds, the World Eaters were the XIIth Legion of the original twenty Space Marine Legions, tragically becoming one of the first to betray the Emperor for Horus's cause. Even before the Horus Heresy, they were a legion known for their brutality, a trait amplified by their descent into Chaos, which obliterated any remaining humanity and restraint. Now devoted to Khorne, the Blood God, they exist solely to spill blood in his name. Their Primarch, Angron, was an early adherent to Horus's rebellion. The World Eaters are now fragmented into disparate warbands, driven by a singular, Khorne-fueled bloodlust, spreading death and terror across the galaxy.
From their inception, the World Eaters were renowned for their direct and brutal assaults, a characteristic deeply rooted in Angron's early life. Raised as a slave-warrior on Nuceria, Angron was subjected to the Butcher's Nails, a cybernetic implant that induced uncontrollable rage and violence for the amusement of the masses. However, Angron's Primarch-born will allowed him to rally his fellow gladiators, break their chains, overthrow their oppressors, and escape into the wilderness. Hunted relentlessly, Angron and his dwindling band of warriors, numbering only around a thousand, were cornered by five Nucerian armies. In defiance, they prepared their own graves, signaling a fight to the death.
But Angron's end was not to come. The Emperor, observing his deeds from orbit, revealed himself and his purpose to the Primarch. Yet Angron, steadfast in his loyalty, refused the Emperor's offer, choosing instead to fight and die alongside his comrades. As the sun rose and the enemy closed in, the Emperor, recognizing the futility of Angron's position, teleported him to his vessel. While this saved Angron from certain death, it was viewed as a profound betrayal, as his comrades perished in his absence. He never forgave the Emperor. Taking command of the XIIth Legion, which he renamed the "World Eaters," Angron initiated a program to replicate the Butcher's Nails, believing their enhancements to speed, aggression, and strength would make his Legion unstoppable.

The World Eaters, both from the Butcher's Nails driving them mad as well as being the chosen Chaos Marines of Khorne, are completely insane, infinitely barbaric, and endlessly sadistic monsters. Their only purpose in life is to kill as many things as possible in the name of their infernal god, and they don't care who or what it is they slaughter. Due to the Butcher's Nails, World Eaters are physically incapable of feeling any kind of joy or pleasure unless it comes from violence and murder, and even feel agony if they express any emotion other than ferocious rage. Their devotion to killing and bloodshed is such that apart from pistols, World Eaters no longer even bother with any kind of ranged weaponry, fully committed to strictly melee combat to better relish making every kill as painful as possible for their enemies.
