Wraith is a major antagonist within the Turtle Rock Studios first-person shooter Video game, Evolve, developed by 2K. He serves as one of the playable monsters the player can select against the hunters. The Wraith mostly specializes in stealth and assassination maneuvers, making one of the deadliest creatures among his brethren.

Background[]

Wraiths aided in the downfall of Shear and one was captured and experimented on in an attempt to recreate the teleportation. The Wraith would soon escape its containment and hunt down the remaining hunters and destroy humanity.

Appearance[]

Stage 1[]

Wraith is a white like creature. He has very scythe-like appendages. Wraith often uses these appendages to impale his victims. Wraith has tentacles for feet, these tentacles never actually touch the ground, Wraith mostly hovers since he doesn't require the ability to walk. These tentacles are very thin like and don't seem to be very long. Despite Wraith having scythe-like appendages he does have two pairs of arms to go with these appendages. Wraith has what appears to be about three fingers on each hand. These hands have very sharp claws at the end of these fingers. Wraith seems to have very sharp black spikes on his back.

Stage 2[]

Stage 2 Wraith is relatively the same except he's much taller.

Stage 3[]

Wraith is the same as stage 2 except his spikes are far longer and he's much taller. Wraith seems to have black-ish spots all across his body.

Supernova[]

In the Supernova form, Wraith's body is blue. Wraith's glowing and his body is sparkling all over.

Personality[]

At first the Wraith seems like a mindless creature that's only thinking of food; according to the narrator this is not the case. The Wraith is fully capable of thinking and much like the other monsters hates humanity and will do anything to torment them due to the experiments they put him through.

Unlike his allies, Wraith is very stealthy and prefers to torture its victims before killing them implying that Wraith hates them the most. Wraith is often deceptive and manipulative because he constantly tries baiting his victims into certain death. Wraith uses his abilities to the fullest and constantly tries to take his victims by surprise. Wraith often uses the shadows to his advantage implying that Wraith is an extremely intelligent being. As Wraith is fully aware that he's not the strongest and finds way around his weaknesses thanks to how cunning he is. Wraith is so cunning and clever that he often outsmarts the hunters on multiple occasions. Wraith is extremely intelligent as he shows his intelligence by not only outsmarting the hunter; using the environment to his advantage to get the drop on the hunters. Sometimes the Wraith will even create after images to confuse his prey as well, this shows just how cunning and intelligent the Wraith truly is.

It's possible that Wraith may be a misogynist because it often goes for the women before going after anyone else. This is likely because Wraith sees women as easy and weak prey. It's also possible that Wraith may exhibit misogynist behavior patterns because it was experimented on by women.

Much like his allies and fellow monsters. Wraith cares for them. He can be seen on multiple occasions actively risking his life along with his fellow monsters to rescue other monsters who have been imprisoned or experimented on by humans. Wraith can even be seen assisting his fellow monsters in combat in an effort to protect them.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Abduction - Wraith dashes to a target, grabs it, and returns to its original position. The grab stuns the hunter for the duration and does single target damage. Missing will cause the Wraith to travel the full length of the abduct before returning to its original position. It is an excellent tool for separating a hunter from the rest of the team, or for creating aerial combos. The Wraith can abduct wildlife, or steal and incapacitate hunters.
  • Warp Blast - The Wraith dashes to the targeted position before generating a large explosion. The blast deals damage in an area of effect and knocks targets back. The Wraith is immune to mines and other traps during the dash, but can be hurt by mines post-detonation. Pressing the ability button while dashing will stop it prematurely, and allow the user control over where the explosion takes place.
  • Phantom - The Wraith spawns a copy of itself that is invulnerable and attacks wildlife and hunters (dealing actual damage), but disappears after a certain amount of time. If the Wraith is not near a target, the Phantom will enter the sneak state and wait for a target to approach. The Phantom moves in the direction Wraith is facing when activated, and leaves a visible trail of blue energy in its wake as well as a flashing particle effect when shot. The cooldown is reduced when the Phantom kills wildlife, and disappears as soon as it does so. The Phantom is also affected by Supernova, and will receive the same buffs as the real Wraith within the Supernova. The Phantom can be extremely deadly within the Supernova.
  • Supernova - Wraith will begin to glow a bright white color and give off an aura that slows down movement, along with increasing her attack speed and attack strength significantly.
  • Isolation - Isolated targets within a 60 m radius around Wraith get isolation stacks applied to them every 5 seconds. Hunters are considered isolated if they are not within 20 m of teammates. Each isolation stack increases the Wraith's first melee attack by 60 damage, with a max of 5 stacks on a single target. Isolation stacks are permanent until Wraith procs the effect with a melee.

Trivia[]

  • Wraiths are essential to the monsters invasion as they opened rifts from their world into the human world.
  • Official descriptions often label Wraith as female. This is due to the inspiration the developers drew from creatures like mermaids and sirens.
  • A captured Wraith is the centerpiece of the Wraith Trap map, and can provide teleportation to Monster or Hunters in an Evacuation campaign.
  • Despite the Wraith's strange morphology and stealthy nature, it still leaves tracks behind. This is because its "legs" drag across the ground as it moves.
  • The Wraith's head will glow red under certain circumstances. This only occurs when she uses her abduction ability.
  • It's possible that the Wraith's appearance and stealth approach are a reference to the Alien franchise, namely a Xenomorph in tactics and Xenomorph Queen in amount of arms (4) and size.
  • The Wraith used to become invisible during the duration of its Decoy ability. This is no longer the case as of Evolve Stage 2, and the ability has been appropriately renamed "Phantom". The Phantom is a bluer hue than the Wraith to allow Hunters to differentiate between the two.
  • Along with the Decoy being reworked, Wraith was also given a Passive in Stage 2. The Passive causes Hunters to receive a Isolation debuff when separated from the team. The debuff will remain with the Hunter until they come in contact with the Wraith, and it grants additional damage. Isolation can stack and can be observed by other Hunters as a dark, black mist.
  • In Stage 2, when becoming Isolated or battling, Hunters may very often hear an eerie, whispery female voice. The voice has been heard to say "All that lives, dies," "Die," "You will all die," and "You will lose." When attacked by the Wraith with an Isolation debuff, the same female voice can be heard. It's unknown whether the Monster is actually speaking to the Hunters, or the Hunters are hallucinating. The voice can be observed in this video.
    • The fact that the voice says "All that lives, dies" is very clearly a nod to Kala's lines. When downed, Kala will shout the same thing, albeit much more desperately. This enforces the fact that the Monsters have been and can speak through Kala.
