~ Wren's final words. |
Wren is a supporting character in the AMC Series Into the Badlands.
She is a Bowler Clipper serving the Widow who lost her leg during an attempt to cross a controlled pass during the war with Baron Chau. This injury causes her to become bitter and jaded towards the Widow, and she joins forces with fellow Bowler Arthur in an attempt to overthrow the Widow and end the war.
She was portrayed by Tamsin Topolski.
Personality[]
Wren is initially shown to be a headstrong and capable Clipper, who is willing to put herself on the front lines for the sake of the Widow's cause. She expresses great contempt for Juliet Chau, the Baron of Cog slaves, as Wren was once a Cog herself. Wren is willing to go into the controlled pass despite the number of people who have died trying. The loss of her leg causes her to become a much angrier and more cynical person. He anger over being crippled was intense enough that she lambasted Bajie, the one who saved her by having the leg removed after it was poisoned, for not letting her die, as now she has to live in a world where she cannot fight. The loss of her leg and lack of help on the front lines from the Widow causes her to become imbittered against her, giving her motivation to start a coup d'état. On the brink of being executed, Wren faces death with dignity, and even refuses to wear a blindfold so she can look at the Widow before she is shot.
Biography[]
Fighting at Sniper Ally[]
When Sunny and Bajie arrive at Sniper Ally, they lie and say Sunny is the new Regent of the Widow's territory and enlist the help of several Clippers to get through the ally, including Wren and Arthur. Wren and Bajie hit it off pretty well, with both of them having a good sense of humor despite the dire circumstances. During the groups attempt to get through the ally, Wren is shot three times in the leg by the Sniper, and is saved by Sunny, who uses the door of a broken down car as a shield to grab Wren and pull her back into the Widow's safe camp. Wren is then taken to see the doctor by Bajie, who informs him that she is unlikely to survive due to the arrows causing an infection, and that she won't live unless her leg is cut off. Bajie reveals that he has the ability to nullify pain due to him once possessing the supernatural ability known as the Gift, and he can prevent Wren from going into shock while her leg is being amputated. The doctor agrees to this, and Wren's leg is amputated without her dying. However, when she wakes up, she is angry at Bajie for saving her, as she now has to live in a world where she is unable to walk properly, meaning she cannot fight. Bajie apologizes, saying that change will come to the world, but Wren says neither of them will live to see it.
Coup d'état[]
Wren and Arthur decide to work together to overthrow the Widow so that they can force an armistice between her and the Widow. Wren sneaks into the Widow's compound and sees that more and more of her followers are beginning to abandon her cause, and she alongside Arthur and the other Clippers from their camp invade the Widow's home and flood it with gas that incapacitates the Widow and her lover Gaius Chau. The two of them are imprisoned together in a cell, where they are confronted by Wren and Arthur. Wren lambasts the Widow for her failure to protect her own soldiers, and forcing them to die on the front lines for her. The Widow tries to explain that she only wants to defeat Chau to put an end to the Cog slave trade, but Wren refuses to listen. The coup is eventually ended due to the arrival of Lydia and Nathaniel Moon, who bring their own Clipper force to overpower the treasonous Clippers and imprison them. Arthur is killed during the fight, but Wren is not, and she is set up to be executed by the Widow. Before she dies, Wren tells the Widow to fulfill her promise and make the better world she said she would. The Widow says that Wren has her word, and offers to blindfold her before she is shot, but Wren refuses the blindfold, and does not close her eyes until the last second before she is killed.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Wren is shown to be proficient in combat, to the point that she is still able to take down several Clippers even while using a prosthetic leg.
- Archery: Wren is a highly capable archer, using her skill to go on the front lines into Sniper Ally, and makes it her primary form of offense after becoming disabled.
Trivia[]
- Wren is the only female Bowler seen in the series, as the other female Clippers under the Widow are known as Butterflies. The reason for this is likely because Wren chose to fight on the front lines, whereas the Butterfly Clippers stay in the Widow's compound where they act as her personal bodyguards.
