Xing Daorong is a minor antagonist from the 14th-century classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by the late Luo Guanzhong and it's multiple adaptations.

Biography[]

Xing Daorong was general serving under Liu Du, who was the governor of Linling, a city in southern Jing Province. It is said that he was Liu Du's strongest general. In 208 AD, Cao Cao invaded Jing Province and managed to take control of a big part of it with most governors becoming his vassals with Liu Du being one of them.

After Cao Cao's crushing defeat at Chibi, his foothold in Jing weakened heavily with both Sun Quan and Liu Bei took advantage of it and invading it. In late 208 Liu Bei attacked Lingling following the advice of his strategist, Zhuge Liang.

Xing Daorong was recommended by Liu Du's son, Liu Xian to defend against Liu Bei's attack. Xing himself provoked Liu Bei's forces and exchanged some words with Zhuge Liang who offered him a chance to surrender but Xing Daorong refused and attacked going straight for Zhuge Liang's head. While pursuing Zhuge Liang, Xing Daorong was ambushed by Zhang Fei, and the two started to fight with Xing Daorong retreating and falling to another ambush by Zhao Yun who threw him of his horse. Xing Daorong then surrendered and was brought to Liu Bei.

Even though Liu Bei wanted to execute him, Zhuge Liang decided to let him go and use him promising to spare him if he captures Liu Xian. Xing Daorong accepted and upon returning to his camp he and Liu Xian set up a trap for Liu Bei. However, the plan failed as their camp was set in fire and later, both Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun attacked them with Xing Daorong dying in battle and Liu Xian being captured thus leading to Liu Du's surrender of the city to Liu Bei.
