Xtabay is a major antagonist in the 2021 Netflix limited series Maya and the Three. She is the sadistic Mayan Goddess of Illusions and one of the members of the Underworld's gods that served Mictlan. She is the archenemy of Picchu.

She was portrayed by Grey DeLisle, whose best known for playing Vicky from The Fairly OddParents, Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Duchess from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Jacqueline Natla from the Tomb Raider franchise, Asajj Ventress from the Star Wars franchise, Catwoman from Batman: Arkham, High Priestess from Samurai Jack, and Jubileus from Bayonetta.

Personality[]

Out of most of the Underworld's gods and goddesses, Xtabay is the only Underworld deity to be just as bad as Lord Mictlan himself, as she is sadistic, cunning, and cruel.

She can also come off as petty when she was spared by Picchu under her pleas, for which she felt humiliated and ungrateful as it led to the decision of massacring Picchu's people, including his parents, as her way of getting payback. She's also rather uncaring for her comrades, as she was last seen laughing at Skull's corpse after Maya killed her.

Another point regarding her sadism is that she can often mock those who have died or have lost against Mictlan or the other gods by shapeshifting into said victims to portray them in a disgraceful way (Acat was an example), also to entertain Mictlan himself and the other gods. Just like the other gods, she is rather disloyal to Mictlan and is willing to betray him just to sacrifice Maya like the rest.

Biography[]

There isn't much to Xtabay's origins, but around sometime during Mictlan's reign, she was originally a friend to Lady Micte and once participated in her wedding as one of her maidens.

She first made her appearance when she and her troop of soldiers attacked a village belonging to one of the Golden Mountain Barbarians. However, Picchu manages to overwhelm her army and then proceeds to fight the latter in combat before cornering her on the rooftop. She began pleading for mercy as Picchu does so, though this was not the last time Xtabay was seen as she felt humiliated into making an attempt for revenge. After the battle, Xtabay manages to strike Picchu, making him faint while she and her soldiers take this advantage to massacre the entire village, including Picchu's parents.

After Picchu wakes up to find his parents and people dead, Xtabay would then torment him that sparing her resulting into his people's demise and would leave him in despair as he grieves his people as her actions and words alike would forever haunt him.

She's later seen with Chivo (God of Dark Magic), Bones and Skull (Goddesses of Thievery), and Vucub (God of Jungle Animals) as they all prepare to fight off Maya and the rest of the three recruited warriors back at Teca. She first fought Picchu once again before having to torment him psychologically through her illusions of the past event of the village's massacre and repetitively using the same words through Picchu's parents. During the memory of Picchu sparing her, she attempts to provoke him to aim a strike at her before Picchu chooses to spare her, stating that the mercy he gave made no mistake to his people. Enraged, Xtabay attempts to kill him before Maya and Chimi intervened to fight her side by side.

She's later seen regrouping with the other four deities as they all fought each of the four warriors respectively, in which Xtabay transforms into Picchu to match his strength. Unfortunately, she was overwhelmed and easily defeated by her own victim himself before having to get up and witness Skull's death, only to laugh and retreat alongside the other gods due to witnessing Maya killing her.

She's later seen in the Underworld's temple, entertaining Mictlan and the other gods by shapeshifting into numerous victims of the latter before Zatz brought in Maya and her allies to face Mictlan themselves. She was seen watching the whole fight until Mictlan was thrown outside to the lava pits, this would give her and her allies a chance to chase after Maya and her allies.

Throughout the chase, she and her allies would be taken down by Picchu as he sacrificed himself to save his companions. Later on, Mictlan would arrive as she and her allies assisted their ruler to fight off Picchu, only to have killed him moments onward in one go.

She is then seen participating in the attempt to destroying all four kingdoms with Mictlan during the final battle. She fought the Jungle Lands' army by shifting herself into the late king of their kingdom, whose also the Widow Queen's father, attempting to have them join Mictlan before declining of knowing better than her father. Xtabay, enraged, attacks the Jungle Lands soldiers in the process.

She is last seen summoned by Mictlan before she had her heart ripped moments later. She is then killed in the process, but deservingly after what she did to Picchu and his people.
