Biography[]
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories[]
The Yakuza first began operating in Liberty City during the 1970s due to financial crises in East Asia. By 1998 they had become one of the strongest gangs in the city and had begun to stockpile weapons, including a tank, which Toni Cipriani destroys on orders from Salvatore Leone. Due to his actions, Toni gains the interest of Toshiko Kasen, wife of the Yakuza leader Kazuki, who hires Toni to sabotage the Yakuza's actions to weaken them before killing her husband. First, she has Toni steal the weapons and deliver them to businessman Phil Cassidy. Then, she has Toni reluctantly destroy money from the Big Shot Casino whilst it is being transported. Toshiko then decides to reveal her links to Toni, by going to an opera, where they are attacked by the Forelli Family members. They survive and a Yakuza gang member spots them entering Toshiko's apartment, leading to Toshiko giving Toni the orders to kill her husband. Toni kills him, on the roof of his casino, and returns to Toshiko's apartment, where she commits suicide, leaving the Yakuza without a leader. Despite having no leader, they maintain their control of Torrington, south Belleville Park, Pike Creek and west Wichita Gardens.
Grand Theft Auto Advance[]
By 2000, the Yakuza is led by Kazuki's sister Asuka. The Yakuza have lost territory in Belleville Park, Aspatria, Pike Creek and part of Wichita Gardens. The Big Shot Casino has also been lost and replaced by Pachinko World, although they are paid protection money from the new owner. The neighborhood of Hepburn Heights in Portland was taken over by the Yakuza and the Diablos are moved to Harwood, likely as a revenge for the Diablos not paying their protection money, as implied one year later in Grand Theft Auto III.
The Yakuza do manage, however, to gain Bedford Point, where Asuka bases herself. Asuka's niece, Yuka, is kidnapped by Mike on orders from Colombian Cartel leader Cisco, although Mike later rescues her on orders from Asuka. Asuka then begins to employ Mike, seemingly in love with him, and help him look for Vinnie's killer. Mike first collects some protection money from a casino owner, before helping the Liberty City Cocks by injuring a Vice City Mambas quarterback, to help Asuka's gambling business. She then sends Mike to kill actor Biff Rock and bring back his shoes as proof of his death, although Mike can spare him and take his shoes to Asuka as "proof". Mike then discovers that the Uptown Yardies are delivering bad fish to Asuka's sushi restaurants and then kidnaps Mafia members to send to Asia as slaves.
Mike decides to stop working for Asuka, agreeing to help her one more time by killing a rival pimp in Newport. Asuka later contacts Mike in regards to Yardies leader King Courtney, who they both dislike. Asuka tells Mike where he can locate Courtney, but is ambushed. Later, Asuka sends some of her men to assist Mike in the battle with Yardies, who then leave him to tackle them on his own.
Grand Theft Auto III[]
In the year 2001, Asuka and Maria Latore save Claude's life after Salvatore Leone leads him into a trap, as compensation Asuka the leader of the Yakuza sends Claude to kill the mobster to cut ties with the Leone Family which would cause them to had more relevance in Liberty City and as a consequence a mess with some mobsters that Claude Speed easily eliminated which would lead to meeting Asuka's brother named Kenji. Claude would do more jobs for Asuka such as assassinating a Paparazzi, taking the pay of a corrupt policeman who previously helped the Yakuza and killing an undercover policeman who is employed at his brother Kenji's casino.
Claude goes to Kenji's casino where to show his loyalty to the Yakuza he has to help his most loyal member Kanbu by getting him out of prison, after helping him Claude gains Kenji's trust and does various jobs such as stealing sports cars and picking up the money from the protection of his businesses but when Kenji finds out about the future deal that the Colombians and the Yardies are going to make, he sends Claude to pretend to be Yardie to frustrate the deal, which he does not end up achieving since now the Yardies are selling SPANK in the streets, the latter infuriates Kenji, being able to notice Claude's inefficiency when doing the jobs, which gives him one last chance if he kills all the Yardies drug dealers in the area, after doing so, Claude did not return to Kenji's casino.
In this time interval the Yakuza reach a council with the Colombian cartel but this would not last long as Claude would arrive in a cartel car to kill one of their leaders, Kenji. After the situation Asuka would seek revenge on the cartel which would lead her to meet Miguel who ends up being betrayed by Catalina so she can escape from the scene, seeing that he had an important member of the organization Asuka would torture him to get information from the cartel as his SPANK posts in liberty city and his plane with drug shipments that Claude would soon destroy only to find out later that Asuka and Miguel were killed by Catalina who kidnapped Claude's love interest, after the death of their leaders the state of the band is unknown.
