Yama-uba was a ghost themed Youkai who serves as a general in the Youkai Army Corps and a major antagonist in Ninja Sentai Kakuranger.
Yama-uba was voiced by the late Haruko Kitahama and played in her human form by Toshie Shoko.
Biography[]
Past[]
Yama-uba first came to be when humanity's negative emotions physically manifested and formed thier own group under the leadership of the most powerful of thier kind; Daimaou. Yama-uba was the younger sister of Daimaou, the older sister of Daidarabotchi, the middle of the three siblings, and the aunt of Gashadokuro. Some 2000 years ago, Daimaou completely cut ties to his siblings because he feared that he would become too attached to them and lose his cruelty. In doing so, Yama-uba became hated and incredibly disrespected amongst the Yokai and they sought to regain respect within the group.
Yama-uba was later among the Yokai who managed to avoid being sealed behind the Seal Door by the Ancient Kakurangers, but was reduced to the form of an old woman when the Yo Power was sealed with Daimaou.
Kakuranger[]
By 1994, Yama-uba has evolved into a more human form and opened a inn as a front for her schemes by the time that the Yo Power is released by Kappa. Despite this, she does not emerge as a threat until after all of the Minor Yokai are defeated and Daimaou has no other minions left.
By early 1995, Yama-uba and Daidarabotchi reunite with each other and join forces to start kidnapping children in a nearby village and holding them in Yama-uba's inn. After hearing of the kidnappings from a corn vendor, the Kakurangers investigate only to get lost thanks to a spell from Yama-uba and end up staying in her inn. Delighted with the heroes coming to thier lair, they meet with Daimaou in his Skull Castle where he is surprised to see them again after thier falling out so they promise to kill the Kakurangers and regain standing within the Yokai. That night, Saizou follows Daidarabotchi into the woods when he sees him about to kill a chicken but he vanishes so that Yama-uba can attack. Although he morphs and puts up a fight, the two Yokai are easily able to capture and brainwash him by morning.
The next morning, Daidarabotchi has Sasuke attack the others and he and Yama-uba are able to capture Jiraya and Seikai and substitute them for fakes. Whilst Daidarabotchi fights Sasuke, Yama-uba prepares her dagger to kill the four captive Kakurangers and reveals her true form. Before she can kill Tsuruhime though, Sasuke appears and knocks her away since he has summoned Ninjaman to help who easily restrains the Yokai. Even so, Yama-uba easily overwhelms the Kakurangers until the Three God Generals and Samuraiman manage to kill Daidarabotchi. As she is distracted, the Kakurangers manage to hit her with the Kakuremaru Thunder Wave which forces her to retreat though not before swearing revenge. In despair, she returns to Daimaou who reveals the real reason for separating himself from the siblings before using some corrupted Yo Power to upgrade her into a far more powerful body for his new plan.
Daimaou then begins his end-game and orders Yama-uba to gather humanity's negative emotions to make the Yokai more powerful and resurrects Hakumenrou as a mindless statue to help. When Hakumenrou attacks the city, Yama-uba takes the Flowery Kunochi Team to help her. Yama-uba then reveals Tsuruhime's connection to Hakumenrou to the watching croud which allows her and the Kunochi to turn the public against her by saying that Hakumenrou will continue destroying the area whilst Tsuruhime lives which causes thier negative emotions to form into a gigantic cloud of Yo Power. Yama-uba then meets Tsuruhime in the forest where she reveals that she must kill her own father since he has been stripped of his soul and he will otherwise never stop rampaging. Later that evening, Yama-uba and the Flowery Kunochi Team prevent the other Kakurangers from reaching Tsuruhime as she prepares to kill Hakumenrou and they are able to successfully defeat the heroes.
Before Yama-uba can kill them though, Jiro and Taro appear and overwhelm Yama-uba which allows the Kakurangers to overpower the Flowery Kunochi Team and Sasuke goes after Tsuruhime. Immediately after however, Yama-uba grows giant and tries to crush the Kakurangers underfoot before awakening Hakumenrou to kill his daughter. Soon after though, Jiro and Jaro tackle Hakumenrou off a cliff so the Kakurangers morph and form Super Kakure Daishogun whilst Muteki Shogun and Ninjaman arrive to help. However, Yama-uba summons the Youkai Lightning Cloud which grants her a massive power boost with its lightning which allows her to survive the Blazing Shogun Sword and Iron Fist Flying Finish attacks and completely decimate the three giants. However, the Three God Generals give the Kakurangers a reminder of what they fight for which dispels the Youkai Lightning Cloud forever and renders Yama-uba completely powerless. After she insults them, an enraged Ninjaman becomes Samuraiman and stabs her with his lance before they form Super Muteki Shogun and finally kill Yama-uba with the Muteki Cannon Full Discharge and Kakure Daishogun's Iron Fist God Finish. With Yama-uba's death, Daimaou is the final Youkai which leads to his final attack.
Yama-uba is later heard, along with all the other defeated Yokai, behind the Seal Door after Daimaou is finally sealed away by the Kakurangers. Reeling that they are now powerless in captivity, the Yokai all vow that they will one day be reborn and regain their power, cursing humanity.
Personality[]
In her human form, Yama-uba presented herself as a kind old woman who deeply loved to look after others to the extent that she called herself Grandma. In reality however, Yama-uba was a violent and sadistic Yokai who enjoyed terrifying children and kidnapping them for the advancement of her goals. Despite this, she was shown to greatly love Daimaou and even called out to him in her final moments.
After assuming her second and more powerful form, Yama-uba became an extremely manipulative and sadistic monster; turning dozens of people against Tsuruhime because of her father and trying to make her kill her own father.

Powers and Abilities[]
- Strength: Yama-uba was able to take down Saizou and Jiraya with single slashes from her dagger and take down all five by gliding through and slashing them.
- Durability: Yama-uba was hit by the Kakuremaru Thunder Wave but only stumbled back.
- Longevity: Yama-uba was alive for at least 2000 years with no negative effects of ageing.
- Human Form: Yama-uba could assume the form of an old woman at will by instantly warping in and out of existence.
- Teleportation: Yama-uba could instantly teleport to any location at will by fading in and out of existence.
- Instant Teleportation: Yama-uba could also instantly teleport around the battlefield quickly enough to avoid strikes from Saizou.
- Floating: Yama-uba could float through the air as seen during the first scene of Episode 50.
- Fire Spit: Yama-uba could spew orange flames from her mouth capable of causing large explosions but didn't faze Saizou as he transformed.
- Weapons Combat: Yama-uba was able to match and defeat Saizou in combat using her dagger.
- Dorodoros Summoning: Yama-uba could summon Dorodoros to aid her in combat.

- Dagger: Yama-uba wielded a large silver dagger in combat.
- Healing: Yama-uba could also continuously summon the Yokai Lightning Cloud as a giant where it could both heal her and make her stronger using the amassed negative emotions generated earlier.
Weaknesses[]
- Yo Power Dispellment: After the Kakurangers' hope dissolved the Youkai Lightning Cloud, Yama-uba was rendered completely powerless.
Arsenal[]
- Dagger: Yama-uba retained her dagger in combat but it was now coloured pink and longer.
- Fire Blasts: Yama-uba could fire large streams of red-orange fire waves from her dagger. This took down all five Kakurangers and later Ninjaman, Muteki Shogun, and Kakure Daishogun with one hit whilst also ripping Tsubasamaru from its back.
- Sword: Yama-uba produced a sword for Tsuruhime to use to kill Hakumenrou.
