Biography[]
Yamata no Orochi is a Demon of the Shinto Pantheon who terrorizes and kills Humans across the Earth, until Susano'o no Mikoto, one of the Three Noble Gods who were assigned the dominion of the Earth by the Shinto God of Creation Izanagi, finds and faces Yamata no Orochi, defeating him and killing him by cutting off his eight heads using the sword Totsuka-no-Tsurugi. Following Yamata no Orochi's death, Susano'o finds the sword Ame-no-Murakumo no Tsurugi inside him, which becomes his new main sword. Thanks to the victory over Yamata no Orochi, Susano'o becomes an inspiration for all swordsmen of the time.
Powers and Abilities[]
Demon Strength: As a Demon, Yamata no Orochi possesses physical abilities far greater than most Humans. However, Yamata no Orochi is not strong enough to defeat Susano'o no Mikoto, one of the Three Noble Gods. Within his body, Yamata no Orochi held the sword Ame-no-Murakumo no Tsurugi, which became Susano'o's new main sword of the time after killing him. Furthermore, being a Demon, Yamata no Orochi does not age and does not feel the passage of time.
Eight Heads: Yamata no Orochi has eight heads, thanks to which he can perform eight attacks simultaneously and, consequently, catch his opponent by surprise by attacking with multiple heads at the same time.
Trivia[]
- The Yamata no Orochi of Shinto Mythology can be compared to other Demons present in other Mythologies scattered around the world, whose description is always very similar, such as the Hydra of Greek Mythology, the Five-Headed Dragon and Kuzuryū of Buddhist Mythology carried over from Hindu Mythology, and the Nine-Headed Bird of Chinese Mythology.
