Yamauchi Yodo is the overarching antagonist of Ryū Ga Gotoku Ishin! and its 2023 remake Like a Dragon: Ishin! (known as Ryū Ga Gotoku Ishin! Kiwami in Japanese). Based on the original historical person of the same name, he's the power-hungry daimyo of the Tosa Domain with plans of selling the entirety of Japan to the British so that they can colonize it in hopes of gaining even more power and wealth.
He was voiced by Hiroaki Yoshida, who also voiced Kyohei Jingu, whom Yamauchi was made to resemble.
Biography[]
Yamauchi was the daimyo of the Tosa Domain. His nature of embracing the social class system lead to a group of Tosa individualities to rebel against the Tokugawa Bakufu and their polices, with them forming the Tosa Loyalist Party, originally run by Yoshida Toyo.
Toyo is secretly planning have the Loyalists raid Kochi Castle, in order to over-throw the Tosa higher-ups and have the class system destroyed. This plan failed though when Toyo was assasinated by a mysterious masked man on Takechi Hanpeita's orders, as Takechi believes Toyo to be too averse to causing bloodshed and making radical moves, which Takechi thinks is necessary to change not just Tosa, but Japan as a whole.
During a secret meeting in Mukurogai, Takechi tells Sakamoto Ryoma that he is allied with the elders of the Tosa Domain, which would include Yamauchi Yodo. He also reveals his plans to change the country of Japan, to crush the Bakufu by any means necessary and abolish the class system, even if it means working with the ones that inforce the class system in the first place. The idea that Takechi may be working with the ones he think he could resposible for Toyo's murder angers Ryoma and causes him to part ways with Takechi.
Later, Yamauchi had supposedly ordered Takechi to commit seppuku as he was behind Okada Izo's various murders. But this was all a ploy on their part. Takechi was still working to eliminate the Bafuku, using Sakamoto Ryoma's name to do so. He works with Yamauchi to start a national civil war, even using the Satsuma Domain and the Choshu Loyalists to their advantage, which is indirectly helped by the real Ryoma when he gets the two of them to forms an unification known as the Satcho Alliance while drunk.
When Ryoma finds out the truth about his impostor, he sets out back to Tosa, as asked to by Takechi. With help from his alliance, they invade the fortress and Ryoma eventually comes face to face with Takechi, and the two have a fight which culminates in Ryoma prevailing. Ryoma talks to Takechi and convinces him to change his ways and redeem himself, which he does decide to do. After witnessing the sunrise together, Takechi reveals to Ryoma that Yamauchi is the one who had been orchestrating his acts, saying he had used both him and Katsu Rintaro to gain weapons and ammunition from the British. Before Takechi can reveals his true intentions, Yamauchi arrives and shoots a bullet at Ryoma, which Takechi takes for him. Takechi reveals Yamauchi plans to sell off Japan to the British so he can replace the Emperor as a puppet ruler. Right as Yodo is about to shoot Ryoma dead, the latter's Shinsengumi allies, Nagakura Shinpachi, Okita Soji and Hijikata Toshizo appear and all corner Yodo. Yodo cowardly begs Ryoma to spare him, saying he is the only one can save Japan and offering him that he can have Tosa, but he ignores and kills him, with Takechi later taking his name in order to contribute to restoring Japan.
