~ The Doctor releasing Yarnaby to hunt the Intruder. |
Quinn Navidson, better known as Experiment-1166: Yarnaby, is the secondary antagonist of Safe Haven, the fourth chapter of the 2021 indie horror video game Poppy Playtime.
He was an orphan at Playtime Co.'s orphanage who was mentored by Harley Sawyer due to his physical abilities and uniqueness among other children. After being transformed into a Bigger Body recreation of Playtime's toy Yarnaby, a lion with rainbow fur, Quinn lost all his intelligence and sapience, becoming a glorified dog groomed into being the Doctor's loyal pet and bodyguard.
He was voiced by Ben Rooker in his cardboard cutout seen in Chapter 4.
Appearance[]
Yarnaby is an adorable lion-like creature, with his mane and fur composed entirely of multicolored yarn. Unlike real lions, his tail is absent. His features extend to an orange-yellow face and limbs, with a black line vertically splitting his face into two, while a touch of tan graces his three-toed paws. His spherical head contains two large, cartoony white eyes with black, dilated irises and small white pupils. On his face sits a big grin with three triangular fangs poking out asymmetrically from his lower lip, giving him a goofy appearance. Yarnaby can vertically split his head open to reveal his real mouth.
Yarnaby's real mouth is composed of bright crimson flesh, and the outer rims contain swollen gums lined with a ring of sharp, jagged teeth, several of which are chipped and broken. Closer observation of Yarnaby's true mouth reveals a smaller ring of jagged teeth lining his throat.
Personality[]
Quinn Navidson was a "weird", but ultimately harmless and friendly boy. He was considered unsettling by Playtime's workers due to his habit of decapitating toys and putting other heads on them, believing it makes them "prettier". However, this would only cause Harley Sawyer to take interest in him and realize he's purposefully holding back to make people's expectations of him lower. He would use this to manipulate Quinn into going all out on the next test, causing results to be much more successful, proving Sawyer right.
As Yarnaby, however, Quinn lost all his human qualities and devolved mentally into what was basically an animal. Yarnaby was originally stated to be docile, agile, and highly impressionable. Unlike the other experiments, the Bigger Bodies version of Yarnaby showed no signs of hostility toward the scientists and staff. Furthermore, he displayed a peculiar semblance of obedience and loyalty towards certain security officers and scientists, specially Sawyer himself (similar to how CatNap was fanatically loyal to the Prototype).
During his isolation sessions, Yarnaby developed an affinity with Harley Sawyer, perceiving him as his master, though Sawyer never cared for him. Following Harley Sawyer's removal, Yarnaby lapsed into an unresponsive state fueled by grief for his master's return.
In Chapter 4: Safe Haven, when his master, the Doctor calls him out, Yarnaby is first shown to be ravenous, trying to break the glass observation window in his cell to get at the intruder beyond, before giving up and slinking off.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Superhuman strength: As a living toy whose body is basically a gigantic lion, Yarnaby is remarkably strong. He can overpower most other experiments, as well as possesses steel claws that can cut through just about anything.
- Superhuman speed: In addition to his supreme strength, Yarnaby is also very fast and light on his feet. He can outpace most other living experiments and can move around without making a sound.
- Superhuman agility: For a creature his size, Yarnaby has shown to be very agile and is capable of maneuvering around tight spaces with ease as well as climb up and over tall objects.
Biography[]
Background[]
The toy Yarnaby was produced in the 1970s by Playtime Co. as part of a wildlife conversation campaign. He was proven to be such a success they kept making and selling toys of him even after the campaign ended.
In the 1990s, Quinn Navidson was one of the many orphans living in Playcare. He was known for his unusual behavior and mediocre results in the Game Station. His behaviors would garner the personal interest of Harley Sawyer, who would encourage him to give his all during his next tests due to realizing the boy is holding back so people will have lower expectations of him. While Quinn's physical results improved, his mental capacity remained relatively unchanged. Eventually, Quinn was used as a subject in the Bigger Bodies Initiative and transformed into Experiment 1166: Yarnaby. This means Quinn was one of the very first "successful" toys, coming only six experiments after Experiment 1160: Boxy Boo, Sawyer's first success. Though similarly to other toys of that time period, such as Boxy or Pianosaurus, Yarnaby lost all signs of human intelligence and became more animalistic and irrational when compared to future experiments, such as CatNap or Mommy Long Legs. He would however, display semblances of loyalty and obedience, especially toward Harley Sawyer, thus Yarnaby would essentially become Sawyer's pet.
After Sawyer was transformed into "Experiment 1354: The Doctor| by Leith Pierre for being a liability, Yarnaby would fall into a depressed state. He would rarely eat, perform poorly in tests, and act aggressive towards any staff. One of Playtime's employees accurately described that Yarnaby was made for one purpose, entertaining Harley, and failed even at that, making him a complete failure.
It is unknown if Yarnaby really participated in the Hour of Joy. However, later after that, Yarnaby would be reunited with his master thanks to Sawyer taking complete control of the prison in his digital state, becoming his loyal pet that would hunt and kill toys in his name.
Safe Haven[]
Yarnaby first encounters the Intruder in an experiment viewing room. Once the Doctor releases him from his cell, Yarnaby tries and fails to break through the window separating him from his target before running off. He will then spend this section trying to hunt down and kill the Intruder, but fortunately, Doey the Doughman helps them escape before Yarnaby could kill them.
Later on, while the Intruder is searching for a way to No Man's Land where the Doctor is located, Yarnaby returns and tries to kill them again. After another period of hunting and chase scenes, the Intruder swings over a pit of lava by grabbing onto a chain-hook in the ceiling. Yarnaby attempts to jump over it, but gets his mouth stuck on the hook. After managing to free himself, he accidentally falls into the lava and starts screeching in agony, trying to drag himself out of the pit before succumbing to his injuries, his corpse sinking into lava as he's put out of his misery.

Trivia[]
- In the original version of Chapter 4, Yarnaby would've randomly caught on fire while stuck on the hook, before falling into a pit of fire. A later update would only have him catch on fire after he fell into lava.
