Bumo... Bumomomo! Bumomo Bumomomomo Bumo!
~ Yellow Devil.

Yellow Devil is a major antagonist in the Mega Man franchise, always appearing as the recurring fortress boss of the final stages. It was created by Dr. Wily to serve as the gatekeeper for his fortresses. Its main characteristic is being made of a unique ferromagnetic polymer gel and controlled by a single eye core. The gel makes up most of its body and can be changed into different forms, being immune to attacks while the eye is the only weak spot.

There are conflicting accounts regarding Yellow Devil's origin, with some sources claiming it was made from Dr. Light's stolen shape-memory parts (according to its description in Mega Man X DiVE). Despite the discrepancy, Capcom confirms its origin as Dr. Wily's first combat robot being made entirely of ferromagnetic polymer gel as genuine canon.

In Mega Man Powered Up, it was voiced by Kenji Nomura in Japanese and Gerald Matthews in English.

Appearance[]

Yellow Devil is a gigantic robot, the first combat robot created by Dr. Wily. Its body consists of yellow goo-like ferromagnetic polymer gel that can dismantle and fly across the screen to attack its enemies manipulated by its core, the eye in the center.

Personality[]

Yellow Devil remains as the only robot whose extremely loyal to Dr. Wily until the end unlike most of Wily's creations that were either stolen and reprogrammed, defect and betray Wily, or are simply defeated for good. It was also said to be the one of Dr. Wily's most effective and greatest creations, as Wily have rebuilt and upgraded it in subsequent games (most notably the Yellow Devil MK-II in Mega Man 3 and the Yellow Devil MK-III in Mega Man 11) due to its reliability.

Yellow Devil was capable of communicating only through the sound "Bumo" which also causes confusion among the other characters as they had a hard time understanding what it said, as seen in the Mega Man Powered Up (the 2006 PSP remake of the original game). The only other exceptations (besides Dr. Wily) that seem to understand its "language" were Ice Man, Time Man, and Roll:

  • Ice Man: "Hmm, Hmm, I see... But I also have my own mission... I can not allow you to derail me."
  • Time Man: "I understand. I will stop everything... for eternity."
  • Roll: "What?! You think that because I'm a girl, you can defeat me?! How rude!"

Despite its loyalty to Dr. Wily, Yellow Devil seems to have a romantic interest in Roll, Mega Man's sister. It felt ashamed and apologizes Roll of underestimating her because she's a girl then asked if she wants to go on a date with it. To which Roll quickly accepts, blushingly, and said that she also had reciprocate feelings for it as well.

Biography[]

Yellow Devil is a recurring boss that appeared in almost every Mega Man games including its own variations, with Yellow Devil MK-II in Mega Man 3 and the Yellow Devil MK-III in Mega Man 11 being its upgraded forms.

Mega Man[]

In the original Mega Man game, Yellow Devil makes its debut as the boss of Wily Stage 1. Yellow Devil can be difficult to hold the player's ground against due to its long attack pattern, being able to split into 19 parts that move in a set pattern. The fight starts off by these parts coming into view from the left side of the screen and assembling Yellow Devil on the right side. Once formed, Yellow Devil will open its red eye at a random elevation (the highest one being out of the buster's reach) and fire an extremely fast shot at the player's position. This red eye is the boss's weak point, and the player can only get one hit in before the eye disappears. After the eye attacks, Yellow Devil will repeat the pattern of splitting apart, and form on the other side of the arena. The player can only be hit by the 2 lowest part elevations if standing still, which is key info in dodging the moving parts.

Yellow Devil's weakness is Thunder Beam which is the easiest weapon to hit the boss's eye and will kill him in 7 hits. Yellow Devil also takes 2 damage from the Mega Buster, Rolling Cutter, and Fire Storm.

Mega Man 3[]

Yellow Devil re-appears in Mega Man 3 as the newly upgraded Yellow Devil MK-II and as the boss of Wily Stage 2. As with the previous model, Yellow Devil MK-II first starts the fight by coming from the left as segmented body parts. The pattern is different than before, having 24 parts that move in the same way every time, but the body parts come out at a slower rate. Once fully formed, Yellow Devil MK-II's eye forms and will attack by firing shots at the player. Like the original form, it can only be damaged from the eye. The main differences are that due to MK-II's new build, the eye is always at the same spot every time, but the eye shoots 3 projectiles, one at a time, before splitting part. From here on out, MK-II's next body attack will be dependent on which side of the screen he's on. If coming from the right side, it will do its initial pattern from the beginning to go to the left. If coming from the left side, however, it will utilize a new attack that chunks all the body parts into 5 columns and compacts those columns into a single body part. These 5 compacted body parts will bounce from left to right in short arcs, and reform MK-II on the right side. The only way to dodge these body parts reliable is to slide under them as quickly as possible. Do not stay to the right when this attack is occurring, as the contact hitbox will appear early and hit the player for 8 damage (a 4-hit kill). Once the bouncing attack is finished, MK-II waits a little bit longer before shooting its eye shots.

Yellow Devil MK-II is weak against Hard Knuckle, which can defeat him in five hits. Shadow Blade also does considerable damage to it, and as its speed is higher that the Hard Knuckle, it can be used to defeat Yellow Devil MK-II faster. Since Yellow Devil MK-II has no i-frames, Shadow Blades can be used to potentially defeat MK-II in one cycle before he can split apart a second time. However, this strategy requires more skill to pull off.

Mega Man: The Power Battle[]

Yellow Devil appears as the penultimate boss of the "Mega Man 1~2" and "Mega Man 3~6" courses. In the "Mega Man 1~2" course, it jumps back and forth and sometimes takes on a round form and attack with a laser. It also attacks by splitting into nine parts that fly across the room, throwing a cube-shaped part of its body that bounces across the room, slamming enemies with its hand to pull the target into its body and launch them at high speed, and blasting its upper body into four fists diagonally to punch foes. Its weakness is the Super Arm.

In the "Mega Man 3~6" course, the Devil only jumps back and forth. After taking a small amount of damage, the Yellow Devil splits into three smaller versions of itself with horns. One of the miniatures will stay the ground, jumping around and firing three small projectiles or splitting in three parts. The other two miniatures will walk around the ceiling and attack by releasing three large energy spheres. After the small version in the ground takes some damage, it will jump to the ceiling and change places with the other miniatures. After all three receive enough damage, the Yellow Devil will reform and jump around the room. It is weak to Gyro Attack.

In this game, it is revealed that its eye is actually a levitating black sphere with a red light at its center. This core becomes exposed once the Yellow Devil is hit with a powerful attack while standing still, briefly stunning it before it reforms itself.

Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters[]

Yellow Devil is the penultimate boss of "Rescue Roll!" course. Its attack pattern is similar to the "Mega Man 1~2" course from The Power Battle, except that its splitting attack changed and the four-way fist blast was removed. It can walk and defend against attacks in this game. It is weak to Thunder Beam.

Mega Man 11[]

Yellow Devil returns in Mega Man 11 as the Yellow Devil MK-III, now equipped with the Speed Gear and the first boss of the Gear Fortress. Just like its two previous iterations, the Yellow Devil MK-III will split itself into multiple body segments and try to hit Mega Man from one side of the arena to the other before reassembling itself, and its weak point is the eye. When assembled, its eye will appear and shoot a single energy projectile. After losing half of its energy, the Yellow Devil MK-III may also slowly rear its head as it slowly opens its eye, before firing three slow projectiles one after the other.

The Yellow Devil MK-III has a new attack method that involves using the Speed Gear. Upon activation, the Yellow Devil divides into nine miniature versions, one of them having the eye always exposed. The miniatures fall in a corner three at a time and will jump several times on their way to the other corner until they reach it, then run back to the starting point and jump away. Afterwards all miniatures will quickly fall one at a time, covering the whole area except for the opposite corner from where the first one appeared. The last miniature to fall has the core, giving the player a small chance to attack it before it escapes. After this, the Yellow Devil MK-III reassembles offscreen and drops into the room fully formed.

The Yellow Devil MK-III is weak to Chain Blast. Due to the time the default Chain Blast takes to detonate, it is recommended to only use it with the Power Gear when attacking the Devil in its full form. To attack the miniature with the core once the Devil splits up, use Speed Gear and wait for the right time to stick a Chain Blast onto it.

In the Superhero difficulty, the Yellow Devil MK-III gets a series of changes. Its split attack is much faster, along with the miniature Yellow Devils, which perform their falling attack twice in a row, changing directions.

Mega Man X DiVE[]

The Yellow Devil was the boss of Chapter 14-6 in Mega Man X DiVE. Its description states that the shape-memory alloy used to make it up was originally created by Dr. Light but was stolen by Wily. Adding to this, its eye is also a control chip that acts as its chief control component that can allow it to taken on its humanoid form, but its programming is not advanced enough to allow it to move. It is also accompanied by a screenshot of the original game's boss fight. The introduction shows it is the original Yellow Devil, but its eye is similar to the Yellow Devil MK-III from Mega Man 11.

Other Media[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Super Smash Bros. for 3DS[]

Yellow Devil appears in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS as the stage hazard encountered on the Wily Castle stage. It attacks by splitting into parts that fly across the screen, shooting lasers out of its eye when it reforms. It can be damaged by attacking its eye, and should it be defeated, it will create an explosion that harms everyone but the player who dealt the finishing blow. It will only spawn if there are four or fewer fighters on the stage.

Trophies for Yellow Devil can be obtained in both the Wii U and 3DS versions. In the Smash Tour game on the Wii U version, Yellow Devil can appear on the map. Bumping into it initiates a battle with the fiend.

Defeating it grants a large boost in the player's stats. If it is not defeated within the time limit, it will warp away to another part of the map, but retains all prior damage taken.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Yellow Devil returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the stage hazard on the Wily Castle stage, although it is possible to prevent it from attacking by turning off the Stage Hazards. It also appears as a neutral primary spirit, summoned using cores of Waddle Doo and Diskun. It only has one support slot, and its ability decreases the player's speed.

Trivia[]

  • In the original Mega Man game, Yellow Devil only gives enough time for Mega Man to fire one Thunder Beam before warping. However, by rapidly pausing the game when the Thunder Beam touches the eye, additional damage can be afflicted through frames which fans calls it the "Pause Glitch".
  • Also, in the original Mega Man game, Yellow Devil's weakness is Thunder Beam. However, in Mega Man Powered Up (the 2006 PSP remake of the original game), its weakness was changed to Fire Storm instead.
  • Yellow Devil's name was initally changed as "Rock Monster" in most early English sources due to a policy Nintendo had against religious references in NES games at the time before reverting its original name starting from Mega Man: The Wily Wars and onwards.
  • Yellow Devil is called a male in the British localization of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U ("Hit his eye enough and he will explode.").
  • Yellow Devil appeared as an event boss in Exoprimal. Although only called Yellow Devil, it is clearly based on the Yellow Devil MK-III in Mega Man 11.
