The Yellow Wind Demon is an antagonist of the 16th-century Chinese classic novel Journey to the West by the late Wu Cheng'en and its multiple adaptations. He's based in Yellow Wind Cave (黃風洞) at Yellow Wind Ridge (黃風嶺), and can blow samadhi winds. His true form is a yellow marten.

In the 1986 series, he was portrayed by Guo Jiaqing.

Biography[]

Origins[]

The yellow marten once stole the Fragrant Blossoms Precious Candles (in Chinese: 香花寶燭) at Vulture Peak, and was captured by the Buddha, but the Lingji Bodhisattva told him to spare his life. After achieving a humanoid form due to learning Taoist arts, the yellow marten moved to the Yellow Wind Cave at Yellow Wind Ridge and renamed himself "Yellow Wind Demon".

Journey to the West[]

When Xuanzang, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie travel to the Yellow Wind Ridge, the Tiger Vanguard, the Yellow Wind Demon's vanguard, kidnaps the former via trickery, knowing that eating Xuanzang's flesh will grant one immortality. This delights the Yellow Wind Demon, who then orders Xuanzang to be bathed and tied up. Wukong and Bajie then invade his cave and demand Xuanzang to be released. A battle ensues, and Bajie manages to kill the Tiger Vanguard, but the Yellow Wind Demon blows his samadhi wind to Wukong, blinding the latter, forcing Wukong and Bajie to retreat.

Wukong would later be cured by the deities, and sneak into the Yellow Wind Cave, overhearing the Yellow Wind Demon saying that only the Lingji Bodhisattva can defeat him. Taibai Jinxing directs Wukong to find the Bodhisattva for help. Then the Lingji Bodhisattva tells Wukong to lure the demon out. Upon succeeding, the Lingji Bodhisattva subdues him and takes him back to the Vulture Peak, where he would receive a punishment for his crimes.
