Amongst the 88 Primordial Gods who ruled over that fledgling world… there existed those supreme beings with nigh-overwhelming and unmitigated power. They were called… Yggdrasil!
~ Siegfried explains to Göll who Yggdrasil are.

The Yggdrasil (in Japanese: ユグドラシル, Yugudorashiru) are the overarching antagonists of the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

They are the four most powerful Primordial Gods of all, as well as the pillars of the 88 Primordial Gods born from the "chaos of the beginning" and who gave birth to the other Gods, who decided to exterminate the Gods they had generated because they were now considered superfluous. Reviving the Yggdrasil is the ultimate goal of Odin.

Overview[]

The Yggdrasil are the four Primordial Gods considered the pillars among all 88 Primordial Gods born from the "chaos of the beginning", as well as those who stand out from the others in power. They are also considered the Heads of the Primordial Gods, and they have arrogated to themselves the right to decide the life and death of all beings in the Universe, including the Gods their creation. Immediately after being imprisoned, the existence of the Yggdrasil and the Primordial Gods in general was erased from history.

Plot[]

The four Yggdrasil, namely Primordial Odin, Satan, Chaos and Ymir, are part of the 88 Primordial Gods born from the "chaos of the beginning" and who then generated the other Gods. Soon the Yggdrasil distinguished themselves from the others for their immense power, becoming the pillars of the Primordial Gods.

However, one day the Yggdrasil determine that the Gods have become superfluous and decide to exterminate them: 7 Primordial Gods side with them, while the other 77 oppose the decision, and this triggers a war between Primordial Gods, the original Ragnarok. However, the Yggdrasil prove to be too powerful and manage to defeat the rebel Primordial Gods without any problems, which pushes the rebel Primordial Gods, including Izanagi, to use a seal called Gleipnir - Weave of Sealed Gods, with which they trap the Yggdrasil and the other Primordial Gods who supported them for eternity.

Shortly before being sealed forever, the four Yggdrasil manage to spread their relics throughout the world, which for Primordial Odin equates to the sword Gram, for Satan equates to his satanic skull, for Chaos equates to his bracelets Draupnir and for Ymir equates to his necklace Brisigamen, so that thanks to them they can one day resurrect. Many of the Primordial Gods who applied the seal die, and only Izanagi and a few others survive. From that moment on, the very existence of the Primordial Gods, including the Yggdrasil, is erased from history and they become only a legend that says that the Primordial Gods disintegrated soon after creating the Gods because of their immense power.

Some time later, the sword Gram is found by a Nameless God who is curious about the legend of the Primordial Gods, and this allows Primordial Odin to take possession of the aforementioned God, transforming him into the King of the Norse Pantheon Odin. From that moment, Odin's ultimate goal becomes to bring the Primordial Gods back to life, and to do so he finds the other three relics of Yggdrasil and plans to sacrifice the Primordial Vessel, someone capable of holding the four relics within himself without dying, and the Water of Life, obtainable by exterminating Humanity.

Following Loki's denunciation of Siegfried's murder of his beloved Fire Dragon Fafnir, although in truth Loki framed Siegfried using the stolen Gram sword without anyone's knowledge, Odin summons him and Brunhilde to his hall to punish them, and here he discovers that Siegfried is the Vessel he was looking for, which is why instead of killing him he has him imprisoned in Tartarus, ordering Michel Nostradamus to keep him alive. Millennia later, Odin convinces the Gods' Council to exterminate Humanity, although Brunhilde, aware of his plans, organizes the Ragnarok Tournament to stop him.

Powers and Abilities[]

Divine Physiology, Strength and Stamina: Being all Primordial Gods, they all possess Divine characteristics that allow them to never age and not being able to die of old age or at the hands of deadly weapons. However, they can be injured and killed by physical attacks with superhuman strength or by Divine Weapons. They also possess abilities superior to those of ordinary Humans, such as attack, defense and speed much higher than normal. Furthermore, being the pillars of the Primordial Gods, the four Yggdrasil are the most powerful beings in the entire Universe, to the point that they managed to defeat the 77 rebel Primordial Gods alone.

Divine Weapons: Most of the Yggdrasil use Divine Weapons in battle. They are similar to normal Human weapons, however they possess very high power and are indestructible unless hit by Divine Powers or other Divine Weapons. In fact, Primordial Odin uses his sword Gram to fight, Satan uses his scythe and Chaos uses his Draupnir bracelets which he uses to attach chains with rounded ends.

Power of Creation: Being all four of the Primordial Gods, the Yggdrasil have the ability to create anything they want, be it objects or living beings. In fact, it was they, with the support of the other 84 Primordial Gods, who created the Gods.

Trivia[]

  • The four Primordial Gods that make up Yggdrasil belong to three different Mythologies: Primordial Odin and Ymir belong to the Norse Pantheon, Satan belongs to the Abrahamic Pantheon and Chaos belongs to the Greek Pantheon.
    • Of these four Gods, only Primordial Odin is not considered a creator in Mythology.
    • Most likely Satan was placed among Yggdrasil to replace God, whose presence could have generated controversy among Christians.
