Yomi Hellsmile is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 adventure game Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.
He is the director of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers, also meaning he is forced to submit to CEO Makoto Kagutsuchi to his disdain, and the enforcer of what qualifies as law in Kanai Ward. In reality, Yomi is a corrupt, malicious and loathsome individual who couldn't care less about law or justice despite preaching such and is willing to destroy the lives of others to get ahead in life, holding no compassion for anyone or anything before him.
His means of getting into power prior to the story was trading with outside military sources, allowing him to use coercion to stay in control while remaining immune to any legitimate punishment for his corruption and abuse of others. He is the arch-nemesis of Yakou Furio, chief of the Nocturnal Detective Agency.
He is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in Japanese and Howard Wang in English.
Personality[]
Yomi is primarily characterized as an abusive and selfish man who believes that he’s above everyone else and is willing to ruin people’s lives in order to succeed. He is cruel, uncaring, and egotistical, taking sadistic pleasure in destroying the lives of those around him. Even though his negative traits are openly displayed, Yomi believes that he’s the epitome of justice and refuses to believe his actions are wrong. He has no well-intentioned goals or likable qualities at all and is nothing more than a loathsome psychopath who lives for his own gain. This also makes him contrast with his boss, Makoto Kagutsuchi, who is truly well-intentioned despite his actions surpassing Yomi’s actions in heinousness.
He is also envious as he believes that anyone opposing his position of power intends to undermine him and is offended by the idea that anyone would attempt to do so. This envy is mostly directed towards Makoto, who was able to achieve the position of CEO before Yomi could, something that Yomi has despised Makoto for doing ever since he entered Kanai Ward. Yomi views him as nothing more than an obstacle and believes that he cheated his way to the top so that he could feel superior to the residents, which is a hypocritical claim on his part as Yomi is responsible for acting this way too. Yomi also takes offense to being undermined by the Nocturnal Detective Agency, being irritated by their defiance and undermining his control over Kanai Ward, believing them to be nothing more than a nuisance. This claim likely conceals his true belief that they’ll undermine his position entirely, showing that this belief possibly stems more from worry than envy.
Even though he is irredeemable, Yomi isn’t dimwitted and is only misguided and shortsighted. He is able to maintain the Peacekeepers’ loyalty to him and his subordinates continue to follow his orders to the letter, even when he is openly showing his lack of care for them by abusing them, remaining loyal to him despite his openly malicious behavior. The only known individual to not fall for his trick is Dr. Huesca, his former business partner who largely aided him in achieving his rein over Kanai Ward, something that irritated Yomi enough that he manipulated Yakou Furio, the detective agency’s chief, into eliminating the doctor for him to prevent his escape from Amaterasu Corporation so he would not be held directly responsible for murdering the doctor himself.
Relationships[]
Citizens of Kanai Ward[]
Yomi is completely apathetic towards Kanai Ward’s citizens and views them as beneath him, being willing to use them however he sees fit, similarly to Makoto Kagutsuchi, who acts as his superior. He doesn’t care for their suffering and even used them as part of Project: Homunculus three years ago, deceiving them into giving him and Dr. Huesca blood samples to use so they could create homunculi from the citizens, ultimately showing that he only wishes to abuse them all.
He doesn’t care for any of the tragedies that the citizens experience and only prioritizes making their situations worse, covering up cases and even outright attacking people who defy his rule. The only reason he does this is to maintain power and achieve a sense of control over them, having no well-intentioned reasons for doing this in the slightest. Ultimately, despite his power, Yomi doesn’t care for Kanai Ward at all and sees it as something to use for his own benefit.
Yakou Furio and the Master Detectives[]
Yomi views Yakou Furio and the Nocturnal Detective Agency as a whole as a hindrance to his power, not caring for the fact that they’re doing their job as detectives to begin with, unlike Yomi himself, who attempts to cover up any cases in any way he can to protect his reputation. The detectives being competent at their jobs is clearly offensive to him and he targets their chief most predominantly out of everyone in the agency, which causes Yakou to act in cowardly ways due to his fear of Yomi’s wrath.
He views Yakou negatively to the degree that he willingly instigated him to murder Dr. Huesca as vengeance for the doctor betraying him six months ago, sending an anonymous letter regarding the death of his wife four years ago alongside the map of the lab the doctor resides in so that Yakou would be able to commit this murder undetected. Yomi did this also knowing Yakou would die from the doctor’s lethal security measures.
Peacekeepers[]
Yomi views his Peacekeepers with equal hostility as everyone else despite them being his most loyal subordinates, willingly abusing them all and only using them for his own gain, as well as scapegoats for his own corruption. However, despite how lowly he thinks of them, he only attacks them directly or has them fired whenever they fail him, keeping them around for his use and even demanding they remain under his command.
Even his most loyal subordinates, like Martina Electro, aren’t immune to his psychopathy, having sent her to be executed when she didn’t follow his orders correctly. She was only saved by Makoto, who pragmatically stopped her execution so that he could oust Yomi from power for his own reasons, which would cause Martina to resent Yomi and strip him of his power as revenge for his abuse of her.
Makoto Kagutsuchi and Dr. Huesca[]
Despite them all being equally responsible for Kanai Ward’s problems, Yomi sees Makoto and Dr. Huesca as beneath him and antagonizes them both. He believes that Makoto cheated his way to the CEO position and resents him for taking control of the company before him, even though he was going to be given the position instead, but only vocalizes his envy towards him rather than physically abusing him as Makoto is Yomi’s superior. This mindless hatred is exploited by Makoto to have him ousted from his position, something Yomi resents Makoto for doing.
Alongside Makoto, he doesn’t actually care about the doctor despite the doctor aiding him in his corrupt goals of controlling Kanai Ward through illegal deals, only viewing him as another means to an end. Because of his view of him, Yomi willingly had him killed when he served his purpose for him by instigating Yakou Furio to kill him and uses his death, alongside Yakou’s following his, as an excuse to arrest the detectives while they’re investigating the research lab.
