If you show off for someone else's sake...and then end up in some position you can't recover from, you'll regret it and end up blaming the person you did it for. No one has any imagination, so they never seem to understand this until they experience it for themselves.
~ Yoshio Baba.

Yoshio Baba is a major antagonist in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.

He is an operative of MEMBER, an organization from the Dark Side of Academy City, being their hacker and computer specialist. He supports the professor from a shelter known as "Summer Resort" with his remote controlled animal robots. He's also skilled at information gathering.

He is voiced by Daichi Hayashi in Japanese and Dallas Reid in English.

Appearance[]

Yoshio is a portly young man with short brown hair. He's normally seen wearing a pair of khaki trousers and a blue sweater vest over a white shirt.

Personality[]

Yoshio is an arrogant and twisted individual who looks down on and insults anyone he deems beneath him. He believes that through the use of information, knowledge, and technology any esper can be taken down no matter what kind of power they have. He's also very cruel and sadistic, as shown when he brutally kicks Mitsuko Kongou while she's paralyzed and unable to fight back after she defends Mikoto's name, seeing it as a sign of her looking down on him, and calls her trash when Ruiko Saten angrily demands to know if he was the one who harmed her.

Moreover, Yoshio believes that relying on the help of others is a form of weakness and looks down on things like friendship or trust. This is due to nobody trusting him in the past, causing him to become paranoid and callous towards people. He's also overconfident both in his robots and in MEMBER as a whole, thinking their members have a chance at beating the top 2 Level 5s in the city with cheap tricks and robots. In addition to this, Yoshio can be petty and wrathful whenever things don't work out in his favor, as seen when he was enraged by his defeat at the hands of Kinuho and Awatsuki to the point where he considered kidnapping both of them, beating them bloody, making them "regret being born as girls", uploading their humiliation on the internet, and finally waiting for them to come crying and begging for him to kill them.

Despite his bravado, Yoshio is nothing more than a coward, as he acts smug and condescending towards his enemies so long as he thinks he has the upper hand, but the moment he's proven wrong, he'll resort to using underhanded tactics such as attacking a defenseless kitten to make Kongou vulnerable to his robotic mosquito. Once he's out of ideas, he ends up panicking and begging for mercy, as shown when he was confronted by a furious Mikoto Misaka who destroyed his robots effortlessly and threatened him for his actions against her friends. Additionally, while he hates relying on others, he's quick to ask for help from his allies whenever he's in trouble, as shown when he begging Kouzaku to shelter him from Mikoto's wrath.

Biography[]

Yoshio's background prior to joining MEMBER is unknown. He's apparently a student in Academy City, attending an unknown institution.

Abilities[]

  • High Intelligence: Yoshio is quite intelligent and is a skilled tactician, able to analyze the abilities of his opponents easily and change tactics when he needs to in spite of lack of information. He is capable of developing effective counters to an esper's powers by analyzing them and acquiring information on their weakness or limitations. Using his expertise in information gathering, he managed to help his school outwit the much more powerful Tokiwadai Middle School during the Daihaisei Festival.
  • Robotics Expertise: Yoshio is an expert in machinery, and prefers to fight using the animal-shaped robots that he has under his control. He uses these to obtain information from a distance, to communicate with others, or to eliminate threats without staining his hands.

Equipment[]

  • Type Great Dane: A silver-colored robot that is in the form of a Great Dane dog. It has an unnaturally long "nose" like an elephant which can act like an arm that's is powerful enough to break rock. It can also act as a vacuum to suck in things like water. It's also equipped with several communication devices to allow a person to speak with him through the robot. Yoshio has these types of robots connected to an overhead display, which allows him to receive audiovisual information from the unit itself. In battle, it is used by Yoshio often in numbers, and fights by ramming itself into the enemy. It has powerful legs allowing it to jump a fair distance and outrun a middle schooler.
  • Type Mosquito: A mosquito shaped nanodevice which can inject drugs into its target, including one that can render a person unconscious as well giving them a fever by using its minuscule mosquito needle. It can also act as a surveillance device as it has a camera and microphone. It requires strong winds to fly in the air.
  • Type Mantis: A large robot in the form of a praying mantis. It has large pincers that are either used to attack its targets or grab them. It's feet are padded and flat, seemingly allowing it to slide on a smooth surface. It also has surveillance devices, allowing for Yoshio to see and hear what's happening.
