Yuan (ユアン Ewan) is the secondary antagonist of the adventure game Shenmue II by SEGA. He also is a secondary antagonist of the series' anime adaption Shenmue the Animation. He is a high-ranking executive of the Yellow Head gang that operates in Kowloon and is the right-hand partner and boyfriend of the gang's leader Dou Niu, which is speculated why he has such a high rank in the gang. He often blackmails Kowloon's shopkeepers as they are all afraid of him and Dou Niu.
In the game, he was voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in the original Japanese version (who also voices the main antagonist of the Shenmue series Lan Di), an unknown Japanese actress in the PAL Dreamcast version, and Lisle Wilkerson in English. In Shenmue the Animation, he is voiced by Tomohiro Yamaguchi (who has also voiced Muninn in Record of Ragnarok) in Japanese and Blake Jackson in English.
Gender[]
Yuan's gender is altered in the English versions of Shenmue II. In the original Japanese Dreamcast version of the game, Yuan was a stereotypically effeminate gay man and a transvestite, but in the PAL Dreamcast version which had Japanese voices and English subtitles, his voice was re-recorded by a Japanese actress, and was censored to be a woman. This was due to the creator of the Shenmue series Yu Suzuki and possibly Sega of Europe not being sure about how players outside of Japan would take a obviously gay character. The subtitles use female pronouns to refer to Yuan, but everyone still verbally uses male pronouns since the original Japanese dialogue for the other characters were not re-recorded. Yuan still has a woman's voice in the English dubbed Xbox release and female pronouns are still used to refer to him. Sega of America was considering on giving Yuan a man's voice, but decided to try and make his voice and gender as ambiguous as they could to not upset western fans. They say that he's still a transvestite in the English version.
In the 2018 re-release of the first two Shenmue games for PS4, Xbox One and PC, Yuan still has a woman's voice when the English voice option is selected and female pronouns are still used to refer to him. When the Japanese voice option is selected however, the man's voice from the original Japanese version is restored and male pronouns are used to refer to him in the subtitles. The official English Shenmue III website also uses male pronouns to refer to Yuan in his profile and says that "he carries himself and talks like the opposite sex". [1] Yuan also has a man's voice in both the English and Japanese versions of Shenmue the Animation and male pronouns are used to refer to him in both versions.
Biography[]
Yuan is a very sadistic person. He is feared among the majority of people of Kowloon and they feel he's very dangerous. He tortured Yuanda Zhu's aide, Shuqin Zhang for information on Zhu's whereabouts. He stated that he was going to make him "spill his guts". He also maniacally chased Ryo and Ren with a chainsaw throughout the Yellow Head Building, and attempted to kill them.
Yuan is somewhat eccentric and is easily recognizable in Kowloon due to his dress-sense, and seems quite clumsy when flustered, particularly in his confrontations with Ryo and Ren.
He hates filthy things and compulsively cleans anything dirty, messy, or smelly. He is also a practitioner of the Mantis Dagger Fist and is known to be deadly when using a knife in combat. He also enjoys collecting knives as a hobby and has a wall full of them at his apartment. Another hobby of his is drinking tea at the Cafe Anna which he feels is an "elegant" way to spend his time. He also owns a pet myna bird which repeats anything anyone says. He seems to be fond of the color purple, as he thought his refrigerator being that color would be perfect for his apartment.

Trivia[]
- Yuan's original full name is Ewan O'Neill (ユアン・オニール Ewan Onīru) which was revealed on the official Japanese Shenmue website back around the time the first game was released on the Dreamcast. [2] This was the only official source where his surname is mentioned. This suggests that he's European, but he may have a Chinese mother, which would make him both European and Chinese. His first name was localized to be "Yuan", which could be a mistranslation, or it could have been done on purpose to make his name more feminine because of the gender change.
- During the Yellow Head Building segment, if the player fails certain QTE prompts that result in Ryo getting killed with Yuan's chainsaw, the screen faded out to red like blood in the original Japanese Dreamcast version. In all other releases, it was censored to fade out to white.
- In Japanese, when Yuan pushes the buttons on the elevator, he's actually saying "Click". In English, he says "Ah, yes" instead.
- When Yuan is about to fight Ryo hand-to-hand in Japanese, he's actually saying "This time I'll use my cute hands". In English, he just says "This time I'll use my hands".
- Yuan's zodiac sign is Aries.
- Yuan has a AB blood type.
- Yuan's height is 170 cm (5'7") and his weight is 49 kg (108 lbs).
- Yuan's birthdate is April 4th, 1962 and is currently twenty-four years old (since the Shenmue series takes place in 1986 through 1987 so far).
