Yui's Father is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito manga Glyceride/Greased. He is the owner and chef of a popular barbeque restaurant, Darma BBQ, found in the first floor of his family's house.

Biography[]

The ventilation in the restaurant is so bad, that the greasy air from the cooking had seeped into the rest of the house as well. As a result, he is covered from head to toe in grease. The poor living conditions had led to his eldest son Goro to become obsessed with ingesting grease and to abuse his sister, Yui.

One night, while Goro was tormenting Yui by squeezing his face to pour grease onto her, Yui's father saved her, and killed Goro by striking him in the back of the head. To hide the death, he then dealt with Goro's body by carving it up into meat that he then served to customers, who began coming back for more, but this caused him to begin considering doing the same thing to Yui, as it would lead to him getting even more customers, and by extension, more money. Over time, Yui's father began surreptitiously feeding her with raw cooking oil while she slept, causing her dreams to become increasingly unnerving and themed around great quantities of oil.

With profits drying up, now that there was no more meat from Goro left, the man decided now was the time to take action. One night, Yui awoke while her father was pouring more oil down her throat, and fought him off, realising what was happening. Her father put up little resistance, and, realising that what he was doing was wrong, resolved to shut up shop for good. However, the house continued to get greasier still, and the former chef began taking up Goro's habit of drinking oil.

One day, Yui walked downstairs, hearing a loud thudding noise coming from the kitchen. There, she found her father cutting up his own lower leg with a meat cleaver, having removed it with the same knife. But, no blood came from the open wound where he had cut his leg below his knee; instead, only great quantities of oil poured out.

Personality[]

Over the course of Glyceride, it is clear that while Yui's Father isn't reprehensibly evil, he has been somewhat corrupted by the unfortunate conditions of his home, with the stress from running the restaurant clearly getting to him and resulting in his concerning behaviour. While he seemed to have Yui's best interests at heart, as he saved her life by killing Goro to stop him from assaulting her, the revelation that the resultant meat was driving customers to his shop resulted in him being blinded by greed, as he attempted to do the same thing to Yui before coming to his senses. Thus, at the very least, he still has some sense of moral judgement about him, but this wasn't enough to truly remove the greed that had manifested in his psyche, as he simply resorted to cutting off his own leg and preparing it into meat - this in spite of the fact that he had sworn off running the restaurant just a short while beforehand.
