Yukio Oikawa is the secondary antagonist in Digimon Adventure 02. He's the 2nd human antagonist in Digimon Adventure 02 (the 1st one being the Digimon Emperor).
Appearance[]
Oikawa is a tall skinny 32 year old man with pale skin and long black hair. His outfit is a purple trenchcoat with a red shirt underneath, and a black tie.
Biography[]
Digimon Adventure 01[]
Though he didn't make an appearance in the 1st Digimon season, in the 2nd season his backstory was told. Yukio Oikawa was very lonely, and couldn't find a single person who understood him. Until he met Cody's father Hiroki Hida in middle school, who became his only friend and befriended him too. they somehow managed to tap into the Digital World through a video game, and became obsessed with the fact they could talk to the creatures within it. They both ended up communicating with the Digital World for hours and hours on end through their video games. However Hiroki's father, Chikara, became very worried about the obsession the two boys seemed to have. When he felt that things had gone far enough, he forbade his son from playing video games and tried to separate Hiroki from Yukio, fearing that they were spending too much time together and that Yukio was a bad influence. Though the two were heartbroken, they remained close friends. They made a promise to each other that, one day, they would go to the Digital World together. The two continued to fantasize and share their dreams about the Digital World together through adulthood, never sharing their secret with anyone else. Later in adulthood, Oikawa worked with Ken Ichijouji's father as a geneticist, while Hiroki became a police officer and started a family. The two continued to study the Digital World long after their contact with it was cut; in 1995, when the Highton View Terrace incident occurred during the events of Digimon: The Movie, Oikawa went to investigate and worked alongside Nancy Takaishi, T.K.'s mother. There, Oikawa learned that Highton View Terrace served as a gateway to the Digital World. Unfortunately Hiroki Hida tragically got killed after taking a bullet while protecting an important political figure in London and died from his wounds. Oikawa was utterly devastated by the death of Hiroki, his only friend, his skin now bears a more ghastly visage, with light grey skin, no eyebrows, and very small pupils. and became embittered that Hiroki had in a sense "broken" their promise by no longer being there to fulfill it. He went to Hiroki's grave showing his grave Arukenimon he created, he ran off in sadness, His father Chikara was there seeing Oikawa in sadness. Knowing how sad it was for him. He walks up to the bridge they become friends as it heavily rains. Oikawa was then at Tokyo Harbor on the pier when the DigiDestined defeated Myotismon. it is implied that he was going to commit suicide at that spot. He saw the Digital World in the sky, He had held up a framed picture of Hiroki to the sky, crying that he wanted him to see their dream realized, he tells to make the framed picture to "see it" and then crying out in despair shortly afterwards yelling "Why did you have to do it Hiroki why did you have to die and leave me alone? How could you do this to me?", Myotismon's mist appears at the harbor as Oikawa cries down in despair, and he saw Tai, Koromon, Tsunomon, Motimon, Izzy, Matt, Sora, Yokomon, T.K., Kari, Tokomon, Salamon, Gomamon, Mimi, Palmon and Joe returning to the Digital World to fight off the Dark Masters (when the original Digidestined returned to battle the Dark Masters), he wanted to go with them and shouted out to them but they didn't hear him because he far away in the Harbor (due to the Dark Masters battles), In his moment of grief and weakness, Oikawa was soon possessed by the disembodied spirit of Myotismon after it promised to make his wish to go to the Digital World come true, and he said yes as he was in need of a host.
Following the possession, he became even darker in demeanor, his skin became sallow and his obsession with the Digital World grew increasingly unhealthy. Despite not being consciously aware of the evil entity he was hosting in his body and influencing his actions, Oikawa gained from Myotismon the idea and knowledge of how to create Digimon to serve him. Combining data with his own DNA, Arukenimon and Mummymon were created with the purpose of doing his bidding and in some way sending a part of himself to the Digital World.
But while they could travel to the Digital World, he still could not, and seeing his creations freely wandering the Digital World only made him yearn to be there even more. He soon came to the conclusion that he would have to weaken the boundaries between the worlds to accomplish this. When he saw Ken Ichijouji at the funeral of the boy's older brother and sensed the Dark Spore residing in his neck, he manipulated Ken into becoming the Digimon Emperor.
Digimon Adventures 02[]
Four years later, as the Digimon Emperor was doing creating nothing but pain and suffering to the other Digimon, it turned out that he was just a pawn. Oikawa's plan was to spread the Dark Spores that was inside Ken Ichijouji, to other kids, so he can enter the Digital World. However an evil spirit who took over wanted the spores so he can revive the King of the Undead known as Myotismon.
After the other Dark Spores had grown strong enough to bloom into flowers, Oikawa gathered all of the children together in Highton View Terrace and used the Dark Spores to try and open a gate to the Digital World. However, he did not know that BlackWarGreymon had sealed the gate with the last of his power. It turns out that the spirit of Myotismon took control of Oikawa because he was upset that both his best friend was dead and his only way into the Digital World was out of reach. Myotismon sensed this, and made Oikawa open up a portal to an entirely different world, the world of dreams. He entered the portal along with the Dark Spore children, his henchmen and the younger DigiDestined, who made it through the portal at the last second. Oikawa was confused when he realized he didn't reach the Digital World when the Dark Spore children became terrified of their whereabouts and broke down crying in fear and despair, and Myotismon's spirit used the powers of the dream world to remind Oikawa that he had possessed him. T.K. asks “him” if he is working with Daemon or “some other weirdo”, But he denies it. Gatomon realizes who the mouth belongs to as she still hears it in her nightmares saying "That voice!". Kari replies "What?", and Gatomon replies "I still hear that voice in my nightmares: Myotismon!". It turns out to be her old arch-nemesis and master Myotismon. The DigiDestined, Arunkenimon, Mummymon, and Oikawa gasps in shock over it like something straight out of a M. Night Shyamalan film as Myotismon laughs evilly over the shocking twist reveal. Angemon and Kari ask her if it is him. She said "Yes!", and Myotismon revealed he created the Dark Rings (just before the events of this show) as a secret (for the Digimon Emperor). Following this, Oikawa fell to his knees in pain and the spirit of Myotismon separated from his body and assumed his appearance before absorbing the Dark Spores of the children to complete his rebirth, transforming himself into MaloMyotismon, and restoring the Dark Spore kids to normal now that the Dark Flowers had been cultivated.
After MaloMyotismon was defeated, Cody went back to the world of dreams through a rip that was created in the barrier between the worlds, and tried to bring Oikawa to the Digital World. With his skin, eyes, and eyebrows now being back to normal. Thanks to his best friend's son, he finally got an actual glimpse of the Digital World, and met the Digimon he had seen so long ago in the video game he once played with Hiroki, Datirimon, who joyfully announced that he was Oikawa's partner Digimon. Unfortunately, Oikawa's body was so badly weakened that despite being only inches away, he was unable to enter the world that he so badly aspired to reach. Knowing that he had little time left to live, Oikawa sincerely apologized to the DigiDestined for what he had done, and expressed regret that he'd never allowed himself to open up to others, as it was part of the reason he'd become such a miserable person and was so easily exploited. He then proceeded to use the power of the world of dreams and sacrificed himself to repair the damaged Digital World with his own being, changing his dying body and soul into data (shown in the form of a swarm of glowing iridescent butterflies). His spirit lives on as a part of the Digital World itself. This makes Oikawa the first known Digidestined (as he has a partner Digimon) to die. Davis, Yolei, Cody, Ken, T.K., Kari, Tai, Matt, Sora, Mimi, Izzy, Joe, Catherine, Mina, the Poi Brothers, the Dark Spore children, and the rest of the DigiDestined mourned the loss of one of their own with Oikawa's death.
