~ Terada to Kiryu before fighting him. |
Yukio Terada, also known by his Korean birthname Daejin Kim, is a supporting character in the Yakuza saga of the Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku, formerly known as Yakuza in the west) franchise.
He is a supporting character in Yakuza and it's remake Yakuza Kiwami, one of three overarching antagonists (alongside Ryo Takashima and Sohei Dojima) of Yakuza 2 and it's remake Yakuza Kiwami 2, and a minor character in Yakuza Kiwami 2's Majima Saga.
He was originally a member of the Jingweon Mafia, but later joined the Omi Alliance and eventually became the Chief of HQ. After Kazuma Kiryu stepped down from his role as the Tojo Clan's fourth chairman, Terada was offered to be the next chairman, which he accepted. Unbeknownst to the Tojo Clan, Terada was secretly leading the Jingweon Mafia in order to extract revenge for the many killings the Tojo Clan unleashed upon their members.
Personality[]
Terada is shown to be a highly intelligent manipulator, as he was able to successfully trick the Tojo Clan into believing that he was dead with a fake assassination. Despite his actions, Terada seems to be a very honorable man. He holds respect for Kazama after he had saved Terada during the Jingweon Massacre, and planned to disable the bombs scattered around Kamurocho because he had suspected that he would be betrayed, and he genuinely wanted to save Kiryu from dying in the explosion. He takes a Jingweon saying to heart, "Death before dishonor." He is aware that his search for revenge is not honorable, which he seemingly tries to undo during the end of the game.
Biography[]
Background[]
Terada he was born with Korean heritage and was originally named Daejin Kim. During 1980, when he was just 16, Kim was a member of the Jingweon Mafia and was currently located at their Japanese branch. He had survived the Tojo Clan's Jingweon Massacre in 1980, along with Wataru Kurahashi, as they were spared by Shintaro Kazama, who told the pair to leave Kamurocho and never come back.
After the massacre, Kim gained his Japanese citizenship and new name Yukio Terada. He became a member of the Omi Alliance with the assistance of Kazama. He eventually became the Chief of HQ, and also became sworn oath brothers with Ryo Takashima.
Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami[]
Terada acted as Akira Nishikiyama's informant for the Tojo Clan's missing 10 billion yen. After Sawamura Haruka was taken to a batting center by Goro Majima, Terada freed her from the Majima's captivity and informed her about the value of a pendant she had. He told her to also tell Kazuma Kiryu about the pendant's seemingly high value. Later, at a meeting consisting of himself, Futoshi Shimano and Lau Ka Long, the three discussed about how they would split the missing 10 billion yen once it was found, as Terada being an informant for Nishiki was a major factor in kickstarting the war between the Tojo Clan for the 10 billion yen.
Terada later appears at the docks, when Kiryu was reunited with Kazama. Haruka recognizes him as the person who saved her from the batting center. After the Shimano Family ambush the group at the docks, Terada assists Kiryu and Kazama in battling through them. After the trio bested the family, Shimano threw a grenade at Kazama and Haruka which fatally wounded the former, resulting in his death. Terada fatally shot Shimano multiple times after he had thrown the grenade, and was a witness to Kazama's death.
Later on, Terada assisted Kiryu in his attempt to take down Kyohei Jingu, the owner of the 10 billion yen, and also the father of Haruka. However, he was betrayed by his comrades in the Omi Alliance, who were secretly conspiring with Jingu to try and destroy the Tojo Clan. Kiryu was able to take down both Jingu and Nishiki, ending the conflict between the Tojo Clan and the 10 billion yen. Kiryu was appointed as the Tojo Clan's fourth chairman, which he retired not even after a day in office and later gave the role to Terada, making him the new fifth chairman. Takashima replaced Terada's role as the Omi Alliance's Chief of HQ.
Yakuza Kiwami 2's Majima Saga[]
Terada announced that he was going to recruit a new captain for the Tojo Clan, in hopes of restoring the damage after the 10 billion yen war. He said that the member who brought in the most financial contribution to the clan would get the role of the new captain. Majima brought in a large cart that was full of money, and won the challenge. Majima however does not want to be the new captain, resulting in Terada having to decide a new way to determine who the next captain will be. The Tojo Clan were not happy about this decision, and Terada became a rather controversial figure in the clan as a result.
After Kei Ibuchi commits suicide after his battle with Majima, Terada apologizes for not knowing Ibuchi's true nature when he had appointed him as the patriarch of the Ibuchi Family. Majima and Terada meet with Jin Goda to make peace after an Omi executive was killed during these events, in which Majima offers to resign from his position in the Tojo Clan, as his own subordinate Ryota Kawamura was the one responsible for the murder.
Yakuza 2/Yakuza Kiwami 2[]
One year after he was appointed as chairman, Terada meets Kiryu and Haruka at a graveyard while they were paying respects to their deceased relatives, such as Nishiki and Kazama. Terada tells Kiryu about a brewing war between the Omi Alliance and the Tojo Clan, and asks him for advice on how to deal with the situation. However, Omi Alliance members show up at the graveyard and assassinate Terada.
However, Terada had actually faked his death. He wanted Kiryu to try and make peace with the Omi, which would entice Ryuji Goda in trying to take over the Tojo Clan. Alongside his oath brother Takashima, they were secretly working towards destroying the Tojo Clan, giving Terada revenge for the Tojo's massacre of the Jingweon Mafia many years ago. He had also purposefully mismanaged the Tojo Clan while he was chairman, which made them vulnerable.
After Kiryu fought Ryuji on top of the in-construction Kamurocho Hills, Terada revealed himself to Kiryu, and told him about his Korean heritage and former status as a Jingweon Mafia member. Terada also told Kiryu that he was indirectly responsible for the death of Terada's boss. Terada tried to fight Kiryu with his soldiers, but were expectedly defeated. After the battle, Takashima betrayed Terada and fatally shot him and Jin Goda. In his last moments, Terada activated a bomb that was supposed to set Kamurocho ablaze, but asked Kiryu to trust him.
Kiryu tries to stop Takashima, but he is able to shoot Kiryu, albeit not fatally. Ryuji stole Takashima's gun and shot him multiple times, which would later result in his death. Although Takashima is able to shoot Ryuji before dying, which alongside a final battle with Kiryu, is the cause of his death. Right as Kiryu and Karou Sayama prepare to be blown to smithereens, it's revealed that Terada had actually removed the fuse from the bomb, because he had predicted that Takashima was going to betray him. This saved Kiryu and Sayama from dying in the explosion. Later on, Kiryu and Haruka visit Terada's grave, and Kiryu believes that Terada undid his actions as a result of his genuine respect towards Kazama, and Kiryu alongside Haruka pay their respects to Terada for saving Kiryu and Sayama's life.
