Villain Overview

Shall we gamble?
~ Yumeko's catchphrase.
"Isn't that what makes it all fun? Madness is the essence of gambling, isn't it? In capitalist society, money and life are the same thing. And no person with his right mind would trust his own life to Hands of fate. Even so, people still crowd the casinos because they enjoy the madness of betting their own lives! In that case, the crazier the more betting is enjoyed! Let's get on with our game!"
~ Yumeko to Mary during their match.

Yumeko Jabami (蛇喰 夢子) is the main protagonist of the 2014 psychological thriller manga series Kakegurui and its 2018 anime adaptation.

She is a second-year transfer student at Hyakkou Private Academy and the classmate of Ryota Suzui and Mary Saotome. Her family is a part of the Hundred Devouring Families, led by her distant relative Kirari Momobami, who created the housepet system that she is trying to topple.

She is voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese (who also voiced Shinobu Kocho as well Erika Harlacher did from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Yor Forger from Spy x Family, Himawari Uzumaki from Boruto - Naruto Next Generations, and Yamato from One Piece) and Erika Harlacher in English (who also voiced Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter, Elizabeth Liones from Seven Deadly Sins, also Shinobu Kocho as well Saori Hayami and Ann Takamaki from Persona 5). In the live-action drama, she's played by Minami Hamabe. In the Sentai English dub, she is voiced by Estelle Link.

Appearance[]

Yumeko is a teenage girl with dark waist-length black hair styled in a hime-cut. She has burgundy eyes that turn red when she’s excited, aka thrilled. She wears the standard female Hyakkaou Private Academy uniform. She also wears a ring around her left thumb, peach tinted lip balm, and sports plain fingernails.

Personality[]

Yumeko is a friendly, upbeat and charismatic girl who attracts the attention of everyone around her, often making a big scene. When she notices people cheating or when she is excited, her eyes glow red, frightening her opponents.

She is also portrayed as a kind, intelligent, and happy girl when she's with her friends. She gets dissatisfied by cheaters or by anyone she considers arrogant, though she can be a bit arrogant herself. Despite knowing when someone's cheating, she'll still gladly play with them with no hesitation in order to expose their deceptive tactics.

Despite her usual friendliness, she abstains from acting this way when she uses her perceptiveness to expose her classmates' cheating. She is capable of doing this even after only a couple of rounds of gambling, as she is easily able to decipher what strategies and tricks they are using to skew the game in their favor. While doing this, she may unabashedly condemn the other player and their ways, preferring honesty over politeness in such cases.

She loves gambling so much it can be considered an addiction. Instead of experiencing anxiety from taking risks, she experiences thrill, and so she prefers to take high-risk bets in gambling, even if she has nothing to rely on but luck. Though this can sometimes end in her loss, she is emotionally unaffected by the results; she simply uses her losses or gains as a means to further indulge her gambling habit. She also wants to make her friends feel the same rush as she does. So, while her pushing them into risky gambles might seem irresponsible, she means it well.

She seems to be quite aware of her eccentricities and that her way of gambling doesn't follow normal conduct. As such, she rejoices when people support her or encourage her, especially those close to her, greatly valuing their friendship, albeit in her own way. Despite the evident joy and pleasure gambling gives her, Yumeko rationally understands that her behavior is immoral and depraved, having admitted that she feels no remorse or sympathy for the people she has defeated and ruined in a gamble, and also states that madness is the essence of gambling. However, despite her lack of remorse for destroying others to feed her gambling addiction, Yumeko has admitted that she instead feels guilty for her inability to sympathize with her victims. She can also show her temperamental side sometimes.
