~ Yura's most famous quote |
“ | Why? Chihiro Rokuhira. Here's your answer, as well as a declaration of war. It's all so that I can wield the Shinuichi. | „ |
~ Yura revealing his goals to Chihiro, as well as officially declaring war against him. |
Yura is the main antagonist of the 2023 dark fantasy manga series Kagurabachi.
He is the leader of the Hishaku and a criminal terrorist in Japan's Underworld, motivated by his desire to take control of the Magatsumi Blade for his own personal goals. He is also Chihiro's sworn arch-nemesis, being the orchestrator of his father Kunishige's death, and the primary target of his revenge.
In general, he serves as the overarching antagonist of the Rakuzaichi Arc and the Sword Bearer Assassination Arc.
Appearance[]
Yura is a tall man with dark hair and concentric rings around the pupils of his light-coloured eyes. Unique dot-like markings extend above and beneath his eyes. He wears a dark suit, tie and pants over a white shirt, appearing identical to a typical gang member from a distance. Following his battle with Chihiro, his right arm was cut off.
Personality[]
Yura is an incredibly calm and collected individual. He is able to keep his composure under any situation; even losing his own limb. When held at blade-point by Chihiro and interrogated, he refused to respond, stating he would only speak if he felt like it. Despite this statement, he openly converses with Chihiro about his motives and process towards his goal, though this may be due to the Hishaku Leader's curiosity, desiring to see how Chihiro had changed three years after instilling hatred within him.
Yura is also incredibly dedicated; for his goal of wielding the Enchanted Blade Magatsumi, he worked tirelessly for three years in order to break the seal surrounding it. However, he does not let his goal get in the way of his logic; when given the chance, he refused to remove the blade from its box himself, wary of what Magatsumi's wielder would do once the blade was unsealed.
Yura is also shown to have surprisingly eccentric and goofy qualities, being shown to take a phone call while riding on a spring ride in the middle of the playground.
Kagurabachi[]
Background[]
The Hishaku first emerged four years before the start of the series, with Yura in charge of their ranks. Three years before the beginning of the series, he orchestrated an attack on the Rokuhiras' home, three Hishaku sorcerers killing Kunishige and stealing the six Enchanted Blades, instilling within Chihiro a desire for vengeance against them.
Roughly three years after stealing the Enchanted Blades, Yura managed to break the seal around the box of Magatsumi, though he left the rope in place and the box unopened. Right after Kunishige's death, Yura would strike a deal with Seiichi Samura, one of the sword bearers, to kill the Enchanted Sword Bearers, promising three conditions: revealing the identity of all ten members of the Hishaku, disclose the identity of the mole who leaked Kunishige's location, and reveal the whereabouts of the other Enchanted Blades
Vs. Sojo Arc[]
Following his supposed submission of Shinuchi to the Rakuzaichi, Genichi Sojo met with two members of the Hishaku, one of which possibly being Yura to report that 'everything was going as planned'.
Sometime after Sojo's death on October 14th and before the Rakuzaichi, Yura gave a piece of semi-stabilised Datenseki to Kyora for him to use at his discretion.
Rakuzaichi Arc[]
Seven days prior to the Rakuzaichi, a member of the Hishaku (possibly Yura) dialed Kyora Sazanami, asking about his run-through of the auction. Kyora inquired into the reasoning for their selling of Shinuchi, but the Hishaku member refused to comment, merely stating they wouldn't do anything that would put the Rakuzaichi at risk. They brought up the danger of the seventh Enchanted Blade, but Kyora revealed he wasn't too concerned about it, even though he'd probably lose in a fight against a blade, and maintained that Shinuchi would not pass into the hands of those who didn't follow the auction's rules.
Yura was present incognito at the Rakuzaichi, mingling with several other guards. As Chihiro ran towards him on his way to the Naginojoen, he created a wall of trees to prevent Chihiro from progressing and confronted him, commenting on Cloud Gouger's limited power now that it was broken. Chihiro attacked him but Yura immediately kicked him into the wall of trees and summoned branches to trap him. He then revealed his identity and involvement in Kunishige's murder to Chihiro, and as Chihiro asked why the Hishaku had put Shinuchi up for auction and killed his father, Yura replied his end goal was to wield Shinuchi.
Yura did not bother to deal with Chihiro, as he did not pose a threat with a damaged Cloud Gouger, and instead offered to talk, desiring to see how Chihiro's hatred had grown. Chihiro refused, resonating his desire for Cloud Gouger to die at his side and using Mei: Shred to burst from the wall. The two's battle resumed, Chihiro now able to even sever the Yura's arm, but the latter was unfazed and kept pace with him even without using sorcery. Considering the situation, Chihiro announced his desire to kill Yura at a later date and burst through the wall to the other side, surprising the Hishaku leader.
An armed Hiyuki Kagari then walked down the stairs behind Yura, preparing to engage him but having not seen his hand-crest. Yura refused to fight, having already achieved his goal of meeting with Chihiro, and he acknowledged the Rakuzaichi was the Sazanami's area of concern, not his own, before promptly forming a hand sign and teleporting out, Hiyuki then recognising the crest on his hand.
Following his departure, several Hishaku members attended a meeting presided over by their leader, now with arm restored. There, the Hishaku members questioned their leader's decision not to open Shinuchi's box, and Yura revealed he intended for Kyora to make use of Shinuchi during the Rakuzaichi in order to test how the blade's wielder would react.
Sword Bearer Assassination Arc[]
After confirming the Kamunabi had taken possession of Shinuchi, the Hishaku were glad to see their plans were being fulfilled. Yura noted it was time for them to begin their next move. He then sent Hiruhiko to kill Yoji Uruha, the owner of the Kumeyuri.
As Chihiro and Hiruhiko engage in battle, Yura is later seen in a phone call with Hiruhiko's subordinate while riding a spring ride in a playground. Deducing that the Kamunabi are hiding the Magatsumi Sword Bearer somewhere in Tokyo, given their determination to divert attention from their Tokyo HQ, he expresses confusion on Shiba's position in the whole thing, describing him as the "pinnacle" of sorcerers while claiming he would still keep on searching for him. He informs the subordinate that they must kill a Sword Bearer and take their sword if they hope to infiltrate the Kamunabi headquarters. When the subordinate questions why he chose Hiruhiko for the job, given his immaturity and being his first time on a mission, Yura explains that Hiruhiko can afford to lose given that he sent their "trump card" (Samura) with a backup plan, while also explaining that Hiruhiko hasn't experienced the world a lot, so it would be good for his maturity to interact with Chihiro, even at the possibility of him losing.
After the successful assassination of Uruha and the obtainment of the Kumeyuri, Yura is seen in a warehouse alongside Hiruhiko and his subordinate, the latter stitching up the former's arm. Hiruhiko asks him why he didn't let him wield the Kumeyuri, and Yura revealed that it is because Samura would be coming soon, knowing that Samura's power with the Tobimune allows him to find out where they are. Samura berates him for not giving him the Enchanted Blade sooner, noting that none of the innocents at the Temple had to die. Yura claims that they wanted to keep him as a trump card, especially since many in the Hishaku were reluctant to involve an outsider, while also pointing out that they successfully completed their goals while depleting Hakuri Sazanami's energy. Assuring him that he has no intention to break their deal. Yura expresses surprise at how Samura went all out, even with killing Chihiro. Hearing this shocks Hiruhiko, having wanted to fight Chihiro himself and declares that he will kill Samura. Samura shuts him down, assuring that he still intends to kill all of the Hishaku once their deal is over. Yura informs him that the rest of the fortresses holding the Sword Bearers have been vacated, noting that Togo Shiba was probably involved, and that they'll need a week before they can inform Samura where the rest of them are. After Samura leaves, the subordinate expresses fear over Samura's new power and the threat he poses. Yura accepts that it couldn't be helped, but states that now it was the time to "play for keeps."
Trivia[]
- Prior to the reveal of his name by Hiruhiko, Yura was given the popular nickname "John Hishaku", a mixture between the name John Doe (used to refer to unnamed individuals), and the Hishaku group. Even with his name revealed, some fans still jokingly refer to him as John.
