~ Yuri Suvarov talks about the murder of Renee Walker to Charles Logan.

Yuri Suvarov is the main antagonist of Season 8 of 24.

First appearing in Season 5, he is the president of the Russian Federation in the show. During the events of Day 8, Suvarov and members of his inner circle plotted to destroy a Middle Eastern peace treaty, which they feared would weaken Russian influence in the region. In the process of attempting to sabotage the agreement, Suvarov orchestrated the assassination of the President of Kamistan, the sale of nuclear fuel rods to terrorists and the murder of Renee Walker.

He was portrayed by American actor Nick Jameson, who also played Edward Hill in Criminal Minds.

Biography[]

Day 5[]

Yuri and his wife, Anya Suvarov, negotiate for over a year with American President Charles Logan and First Lady Martha Logan prior to Day 5. The two leaders develop a strong relationship and Suvarov travels to Los Angeles during Day 5 to sign an anti-terrorism treaty between their countries. Despite chatter that Suvarov's helicopter would get attacked by terrorists, Logan refused to call off the summit, citing that too much time and effort was spent to throw it away. After terrorists take a terminal of the Ontario, California airport hostage, Suvarov reminded Logan that both of them had staked their political futures on the treaty, and if the rescue attempt failed, both they and the treaty would become a mockery. Little did Suvarov realize, Logan only created the treaty for personal interests. Logan planned to kill the Russian terrorists with the Sentox VX nerve gas that his administration sold them. This would allow Logan to cancel the treaty and increase American influence in central Asia, resulting in lower oil costs for American citizens. Fortunately, the hostages were rescued, and the two men signed the treaty. Suvarov and his wife both prepared to leave for the airport. On the way, Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce ordered the limousine to be turned around. When the motorcade began to change course, it was ambushed by Dawn Brigade separatists, who killed several Secret Service agents. While attempting to beak into the limousine and kill the Suvarovs, the remaining terrorists were killed by Agent Pierce. Following this, the Suvarovs returned to Moscow. Many hours later, as the peace treaty had not yet been canceled, the Russians were sharing their military technology with the Americans. This resulted in a Russian nuclear submarine in port being hijacked by Vladimir Bierko, who used some of the nerve gas to kill the entire crew except one petty officer. Fortunately, the authorities were able to kill Bierko and prevent him from launching the submarine's nuclear missiles at American and Russian cities.

Day 6[]

Two years after the events of Season 5, the Russian and American treaty has never been canceled because Charles Logan was arrested for his many crimes before this could occur. As a consequence, the Russians continue sharing their technology with the United States. Graem Bauer claimed during the events of Day 6 that BXJ Technologies deactivates Russian technology "all the time". As such, five Russian suitcase nukes were funneled by Phillip Bauer to Abu Fayed, who then used them in terrorist attacks.

President Suvarov aided the Los Angeles Counter Terrorist Unit when it was discovered that the Russian consul in L.A., Anatoly Markov, was withholding information regarding Dmitri Gredenko and the terrorist acts of that day. Acting president Noah Daniels asked Suvarov if they could interrogate Markov, but Suvarov informed him that they needed to go through the proper diplomatic channels. Suvarov then warned Daniels that if Jack Bauer (who had broken into the Consulate) didn't stand down, Russia would retaliate. When Martha Logan called Anya on behalf of CTU Los Angeles, Anya confronted her husband about the situation at the Russian consulate. Yuri decided to call Markov and demand for him to surrender to CTU and deliver Jack Bauer safely. When Markov refused to turn himself in, Yuri was furious with Markov's betrayal. He told Bill Buchanan that he would authorize the raiding of the consulate and that the U.S. had Russia's full support.

Seven hours later, Suvarov learned that Cheng Zhi had acquired an FB subcircuit board from one of the secured Russian suitcase nukes. The component would allow China to break Russian defense codes used in military technology, which only Russia and the United States were in possession of. If the agent was able to smuggle the component out of the country, Suvarov would initiate military retaliation. His generals had orders to strike a U.S. military base in Central Asia once Suvarov gave them confirmation. Desperate to avoid a conflict, Daniels falsely claimed that the FB subcircuit board had been destroyed. When Suvarov asked for evidence, Daniels offered to send whatever he needed. Suvarov revealed that he was aware that one of his agents, Mark Bishop, was exposed and forced to send false information to his contact. Suvarov told Daniels that if he didn't recover or destroy the FB subcircuit board within a two hour deadline, he would be forced to go forward with military action.

CTU tracked down Cheng and Phillip Bauer to an offshore oil rig in Los Angeles. Daniels and Secretary of Defense Ethan Kanin decided to authorize an airstrike which would obliterate the oil rig and the component with it. Suvarov agreed to abort the attack if the airstrike was successful. Twenty minutes later, the component was destroyed in a successful airstrike. After calling off the attack, Suvarov apologized to Daniels, telling him that he was doing what he thought was best for his country. Daniels told him that he understood and that it would be best to leave the ordeal in the past.

Before Day 8[]

Prior to Day 8, President Suvarov and his supporters sought to derail the peace accords planned by the American President Allison Taylor and Omar Hassan of the Islamic Republic of Kamistan, because the peace treaty threatened to weaken Russia's influence over the IRK. Through his foreign minister Mikhail Novakovich, Suvarov authorized the support of a violent Kamistani splinter cell with the aid of CTU mole Dana Walsh.

Day 8[]

After Hassan had been kidnapped by terrorists as Suyarov had planned, President Taylor met with Mikhail Novakovich and he asked her if Hassan was still in the hands of the terrorists. As he inquired about the leads that CTU was following, Taylor refused to get into details. Novakovich told her that if Hassan wasn't recovered, the government in the IRK would be in disarray, which would harm the peace treaty being signed; if Hassan died, Russia would not agree to the peace agreement. Taylor replied that she felt Novakovich was "hoping" for that outcome, since the peace agreement weakened Russia's influence on the IRK and they had been looking for excuses to pull out. Novakovich denied the accusations, pointing out how they were present at the peace talks. Taylor apologized and asked if she could count on Novakovich's support until they found Hassan, and he agreed.

Hassan was killed by Samir Mehran, and Novakovich, acting on Suvarov's orders, prepared to pull out of the agreement and leave the country. Again on Suvarov's orders, Tokarev secretly injected Samir with a poison at the crime scene to prevent him from revealing anything about the Russian government's involvement. Assassin Pavel Tokarev called to tell Novakovich that Renee Walker might have recognized him at the scene, from her time undercover with Red Square six years earlier; Pavel was currently following Renee and Jack Bauer to the latter's apartment. Although Novakovich was against killing the two, as it could draw attention, he asked Suvarov about the situation, and Suvarov gave the green light to assassinate Renee Walker.

Through the intervention of Charles Logan, Novakovich and Suvarov were blackmailed to rejoin the Peace Treaty Talks. Logan, the former president, sought to save the peace treaty with Kamistan so that he could rebuild his legacy following the exposure of his role in the Sentox Nerve Gas Conspiracy of Day 5. Novakovich relented, fearful of past Russian operations coming to light. Novakovich became a conspirator with Logan after the fact, plotting to assassinate Jack Bauer who had began to discover the lengths of their conspiracy following the death of Renee. Novakovich lent every available resource to both Logan and his right-hand man, Jason Pillar, to murder Jack and silence his knowledge of the assassinations of both Hassan and Renee.

Novakovich watched in fear as the pieces of their conspiracy unraveled as a result of Jack's rampage. Under the suggestion of Logan, he lent out his top assassin, Pavel Tokarev, once again to try and kill Jack. When Novakovich learned that Jack had eventually captured and tortured Pavel to death, he became frightened that because of what the Russians did to the woman whom Jack loved, he would be Bauer's next target. Logan consoled him that Jack was going to be imminently captured, and correctly surmised that Pavel was too well-trained to crack. However, minutes after that phone call, it would be Logan himself who betrayed Novakovich during a violent encounter with Jack.

Later on, immediately after Logan recovered from Jack's assault, he ordered Pillar to warn Novakovich that Jack was indeed coming for him. But it was too late: Novakovich (after hearing that President Suvarov's plane just touched down at JFK airport, was getting ready to head back to the UN to meet up with the Russian President) and six of his bodyguards had already been killed by Jack. A lone bodyguard, Berkov, crawled to Novakovich's corpse, answered Pillar's call, and informed him that Jack had eliminated everyone else. Novakovich, sprawled out on the floor, had been impaled with a fireplace poker through the abdomen in revenge.

Logan then called Suvarov to inform him of the murder of Mikhail Novakovich at the hands of Jack Bauer and warn of the cover-up attempt having fallen apart. Suvarov, considered the valuable "third partner", was arriving to sign historic peace accords with U.S. President Taylor and Dalia Hassan of the IRK. Over the course of the conversation, a transmitting device planted on Logan revealed to Jack Bauer several things about Suvarov: first, that Novakovich was taking orders from Suvarov; second, that Suvarov was the mastermind behind the Russian end of the conspiracy; and third, that he personally gave permission for Pavel to murder Renee Walker.

Suvarov arrived at the conference because the unfavorable treaty was a far superior alternative to the exposure of his criminal conspiracy. He and Dalia Hassan both signed. To his surprise and dismay, however, President Taylor suddenly refused to sign it herself and somberly returned Omar Hassan's pen to Dalia. Yuri realized what was going on in her mind, and quietly tried to intervene. But she ignored him, and to his further horror, Taylor promised the delegates to make a public confession revealing the existence of Suvarov's conspiracy as well as her role in attempting to cover it up. She briskly walked off the podium, leaving Dalia smiling in relief and triumph, and Suvarov in stunned silence.

Shortly after President Taylor ended the conference, Suvarov left for Russia. He ordered agents of Foreign Intelligence Service stationed in New York City to kill Jack Bauer on sight in retaliation for his attempt against Suvarov, as well as the murder of Mikhail Novakovich, Pavel Tokarev, and their security team.

Trivia[]

  • It is never revealed what happened to President Suvarov after President Taylor revealed the truth of the conspiracy at the end of Season 8. However, it is certain that his political career was ruined, and he may have even faced prosecution for his actions.
    • The non-canon novels 24: Deadline and 24: Rogue reveal that was forcibly removed from office and arrested to stand trial for his role in the events of Day 8. However, this ultimately did not materialize, and he returned to the office of President, still seeking to extradite Jack Bauer to Russia for the deaths of Novakovich and other Russian nationals during Day 8.
  • Despite being the main antagonist of Season 8, Suvarov only appears in the final three episodes of the season. This is the fewest appearances of any 24 main antagonist. Charles Logan, the season's secondary antagonist, appears in eight episodes.
  • Some believe that Charles Logan was the main antagonist of Season 8. However, it is undoubtedly Suvarov, who drove the plot of the entire season. His desire to destroy the peace agreement resulted in the death of Kamistani President Omar Hassan, the sale of uranium rods to terrorists who then attempted to use them to create a dirty bomb and use it against Manhattan, Charles Logan being involved with the day's events and the death of Renee Walker, which resulted in the conflict for the final seven hours of the day. Furthermore, Jack spared Logan but was prepared to kill Suvarov because of his involvement in Renee's murder. Had he gone through with it, this incident would have resulted in a war. These all show Suvarov was the main threat of the season. Because Logan capitalized on the situation to try and kill Jack Bauer, he would be the secondary antagonist of the season.
  • Yuri Suvarov can be viewed as something of a Russian version of Charles Logan. Both men were so obsessed with getting greater influence in the Middle East that they restorted to terrorism and were later exposed for it.
    • Both men also conspired to murder another head of state. Suvarov arranged for the Kamistani Splinter Cell to kill the IRK President Omar Hassan, and Charles Logan plotted the death of Suvarov himself after being blackmailed into leaking his motorcade location to the Dawn Brigade. However, this attempt failed, leaving Suvarov as the only one of the two to successfully kill another head of state.
  • In Season 5, Walt Cummings claims that Yuri Suvarov is over 6 feet tall.
  • Suvarov's first appearance concerns a peace treaty, as does his last appearance. Furthermore, in Season 5, he states that the treaty could be rendered a meaningless mockery, ruining the image of Russia and the United States. This is exactly what his actions caused to happen in Season 8.
  • Interestingly, Suvarov's plans all succeeded and he accomplished his goal, which was to destroy the peace agreement. However, this victory was ultimately rendered meaningless because President Taylor unexpectedly revealed the truth about the conspiracy at the cost of her own administration and legacy. Because his role as the mastermind of the day's events was exposed, this ruinined any chance to strengthen Russian influence in the Middle East.
  • Suvarov has served as President of Russia for nearly 7 years following his appearance in Season 8.
