~ Yuri embraces vigilantism |
Yuriko "Yuri" Watanabe is a policewoman in the 2018 video game Marvel's Spider-Man. Although initially an ally of Spider-Man, in the add-on DLC that takes place after the base game, Yuri embraces violent vigilantism in the face of the continued murders of the Maggia and the limitations of conventional policing.
She is voiced by Tara Platt, the real-life wife of Spider-Man's voice actor Yuri Lowenthal.
History
Yuri is introduced as a long-standing policewoman who has maintained a working relationship with Spider-Man for years. Although often annoyed by his flippancy and in particular his jokes and "Spider-Cop" monologues, Yuri nevertheless appreciates Spider-Man's presence, and the two work together well throughout the game's story, Yuri even saving Spider-Man's life after he is savagely beaten by the Sinister Six and thrown into the ocean.
Tragically, when Yuri later tried to bring down the Maggia and their leader Hammerhead, he murdered all of her men and then tried to kill her too before Spider-Man saved her. Subsequent murders of police officers by Hammerhead and his men pushed Yuri over the edge entirely, and she took a discarded Sable-tech rifle and went on an independent rampage against the Maggia, effectively going outside police procedures and regulations to get what information she needed and eventually, corner Hammerhead himself. After Spider-Man beat him into submission, Yuri shot him repeatedly in an effort to kill him, but Hammerhead did not die, and Yuri was sent on administrative leave.
Unsatisfied with this, and now having a taste for vigilante justice, Yuri later tracked down and murdered a Maggia hitman who had earlier killed numerous people, including a therapist the hitman had been going to who had actually been a spy for Yuri to get incriminating evidence against him. Spider-Man later found the dead Maggia hitman and admonished Yuri for her actions, but by now Yuri had embraced vigilantism in full, and bade farewell to her old friend. Her current whereabouts are unknown.
Trivia
- Yuri's descent into violent vigilantism also occured in the comics, where she also took on the costumed identity "Wraith" (an alias held by a few other characters as well).
