Yuuma Azawa is one of the two main protagonists (alongside his sister Chizumi) of the Junji Ito manga series, Dissolving. He first appears in the series' first part, Dissolving Classroom.

As a result of a ritual where he had summoned the Devil, Yuuma is seemingly cursed with making the brains of those he apologises to or complements slowly melt. However, despite appearances, this is not a curse; rather, the Devil granted Yuuma with these powers willingly, and every time he seemingly does so, he is actually in contact with the Devil himself, making this apparent curse actually a 'superpower' of sorts.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

The exact details regarding Yuuma's backstory are unclear, as Yuuma and his little sister Chizumi Azawa will often contradict parts of the story every time it is told.

According to Yuuma, he had strict, abusive parents. In order to release all of this stress, he would kill small animals such as snakes, frogs, and lizards. Chizumi has stated, however, that he was actually killing these animals as a sacrifice to the Devil. Chizumi would later confirm this to an extent after showing Keiko, one of his classmates, a shrine decorated with these animals' corpses.

Dissolving Classroom[]

The story begins with the introduction of a new student at a Japanese high school, Yuuma Azawa. As soon as he is introduced, he apologizes for something unspecified. At first the students take his constant apoligies as a joke, but after learning that was not the case Yuuma began getting targeted by bullies. As Keiko, one of Yuuma's classmates, is walking home she briefly hears news about an odd outbreak, before she is interrupted and scared by a strange girl. Keiko begins running from the girl after the girl threatens to slurp out her brains, accidentally getting hit by a car in the process. Keiko awakens in a hospital room with her parents doting over her, before Yuuma arrives at the hospital. He begins to profusely apoligize to both Keiko and Keiko's parents, explaining that the scary girl was actually his younger sister Chizumi. After Keiko's parents leave, he says to Keiko that Chizumi was was raised alone by him after his parents had died, and that he had began to kill small animals in order to deal with the abusive household, and that Chizumi's personality was warped after he killed a snake, claiming a snake's spirit was possessing her. During the multiple hospital visits Keiko falls in love with Yuuma.

Chizumi continues to scare women and children around the neighborhood, Yuuma apoligizing each time for her, and one day Keiko sees one of these occurences. Wanting to be helpful, Keiko decides to apoligize with him, noting that it feels good to apoligize. Keiko decides she wants to be Chizumi's friend, wanting to hopefully change Chizumi's twisted personality in order to help Yuuma. Azawa refuses to allow Keiko over, saying she doesn't understand how evil Chizumi is. However, since Keiko knows where they live, she visits the home anyway.

When Keiko enters the house she is attacked by Chizumi, who is once again speaking of her desire to suck out Keiko's brains. During their conversation Chizumi confirms that Yuuma killed animals, but says that it wasn't to deal with stress but to instead summon the devil. She explains that by apoligizing he is really communicating with the devil, and that anyone caught between the evil electromagnetic waves will have their brains melted. Keiko doesn't believe Chizumi, so Chizumi opens up a cupboard, revealing her dead parents heads, brains leaking out from them.

When Keiko returns back home, her parents are acting strange, lethargic and forgetful, and have extremely thick "mucus" dripping from their nose. The family all believe it's just a cold, and Keiko herself starts to feel unwell. The next day at school it seems everyone else at school is sick as well. During class Yuuma starts getting bullied by their other classmates, and Keiko intervenes, only to be petrified when they start to melt in front of her eyes. They collapse dead to the floor, and soon everyone else in the school seems to follow foot, their brains melting out. Chizumi arrives to slurp up the melted brains, once again begins explaining how Yuuma's connection to the devil is melting the brains. Yuuma immediately denies her claim, stating that Chizumi slurped up her parents brains as a baby causing her to become evil. Keiko runs out the door, Yuuma chasing after her and apoligizing. Soon Keiko passes out, and when she wakes up she's in the hospital. The doctors explain that her brains have been partially melted, and that everyone at school and her parents have died. No one knows where Chizumi and Yuuma went, and Keiko knows they must be going to do more evil in another town

Personality[]

Yuuma Azawa comes off as very apologetic and timid, always apologizing and rarely acting out. His form of speech is very polite and articulate, knowing how to words things in a way that benefits him, this is especially shown when he apologizes to Keiko's parents, turning them from downright furious to forgiving him and not minding him. Although he seems like an upstanding citizen, he is anything but. It has been proved that Azawa is a liar, contradicting himself on multiple occasions. One such occasion is when explaining his or Chizumi's backstory, on one occasion saying Chizumi had been slurping brains since she was a baby, on another saying that she only turned evil after watching their parents die, and another stating that she was born evil as she was made after their mother had an affair with the devil.
