Yzak Joule is an elite Mobile Suit Pilot in ZAFT and a supporting antagonist in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

Personality

At first, he has a rather short-tempered and impulsive attitude; he is also highly devoted to fighting for ZAFT. When he got a scar on his face after one the GAT-X105 Strike's attacks, he has held a grudge against Kira and kept that scar as a reminder. Sometimes he can give into so much anger as shown when he on one occasion shot down a civilian shuttle under the assumption that it was one for retreating soldiers.

Despite his temperamental and rash personality, he does have a honorable side when calm, such as disliking unequal battles where the enemy is weaker. Watching from aside after the Battle of Panama, he has expressed disfavor of the mass murder of the defenseless Earth Alliance soldiers. His conscience was further opened up after witnessing more of ZAFT's extreme measures and hearing Dearka's revelations of what has been happening on his end. Yzak eventually found out about the incident with the civilian shuttle and felt remorse for it, expressing that he should have received the proposed death sentence during the trial.

He has also shown to be an effective leader, commanding his own team for the rest of the war and during the second war.

After the first war, he has gained better control over his emotions where he toned down his outbursts, only getting angry less frequently and less strongly. He has also let go of his vendetta against Kira, letting the scar heal as a way of showing this.

Biography

First Alliance-PLANT War

Battle of Heliopolis

He is among the attack team that would steal the Earth Alliance's G Weapons that were being developed in secret collaboration with Morgenroete. The machine he steals is the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam.

Battle of JOSH-A

With the other members of the Le Cresuset team absent, Yzak is the only member among the attackers in this battle. He first helps in taking out some of the defenders and then would engage Mu la Flaga's Skygrasper and target the Archangel. When Kira Yamato shows up in the stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam, Yzak was surprised by the unexpected arrival. When Kira warns both sides of the Cyclops System to try and save both sides, Yzak does not buy it and engages Kira, who remembers Elle and the downfall of the shuttle. Even though it looked like Kira was going to make Yzak pay for shooting down the civilian shuttle, the former still chose to spare the latter's life by only disabling his machine. Kira kicks Yzak's Duel away, followed by an ally catching the disabled Duel; Kira's act surprises Yzak.

Battle of Porta Panama

He would be among the attack force advancing to the Panama Mass Driver. At first he deals with the usual Earth Alliance defenders, which are just tanks and aircraft; later, he would engage the new Strike Dagger mobile suits. After the Gungnir weapons render the Panama base and its forces defenseless, bloodthirsty ZAFT soldiers massacre the surviving Earth Alliance personnel, a sight that Yzak showed disapproval of as he watched from a sideline.

Post First Alliance-PLANT War

After the end of the First Alliance-PLANT War, Yzak and Dearka among the war criminals tried by the PLANTs. He was charged for the mass murder of the Heliopolis civilians in the shuttle and was sentenced to death. However, the new Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal comes to his defense with a speech about Yzak being one of the youths who are needed to pave the future. Yzak was eventually promoted to a commander rank of ZAFT White Coat and had authority over the Nazca-class ships Voltaire and Rousseau, while Dearka, who now serves as Yzak's aide, was demoted from Red Coat to Green Coat for his defection in the previous war.
