Zagato is a primary antagonist in the anime/manga Magic Knight Rayearth.

In the original Japanese, he was voiced by Jūrōta Kosugi. In the English dub, he was voiced by Lex Lang.

Biography

Alongside his younger brother Lantis, Zagato trained in magic under Master Mage Clef, and eventually became the High Priest of Cephiro. As High Priest, Zagato was charged with the task of ensuring that nothing would interfere with the Pillar's duty of continually praying for Cephiro's wellbeing. However, Zagato had fallen in love with the current Pillar, Princess Emeraude, whose feelings were mutual.

Upon learning of Emeraude's intent to summon the Legendary Magic Knights in order to kill her, Zagato attempted to thwart this by imprisoning Emeraude within his castle. However, Emeraude was able to summon three girls from Earth, and Zagato sent one of his minions, Alcyone, to kill them. After Alcyone's failure (for which Zagato kills her in the manga), Zagato sends minion after minion to kill the Knights, only for each one to befriend the Knights. In the anime, after all of his minions had failed, Zagato granted the request of his right-hand man, Inouva, to be returned to his original beastly form to face the Knights himself. Along with Emeraude, Zagato watched with sorrow as Inouva fell to the Knights.

When the Knights and their Rune Gods reached his castle, Zagato faced them with his own Rune God, only to fall to the Knights himself, wishing for Emeraude's freedom as he dies. His death then triggers Emeraude's darker self, and after she too falls to the Knights, Zagato reunites with her in the afterlife.
