Zagred, also known as the Kotodama Devil or (literally) Word Soul Devil, is a major antagonist in the Black Clover franchise.
He is the overarching antagonist of the first saga, being revealed as the true mastermind behind the elves' extinction, Licht's transformation into the Demon God, and Patolli's start of darkness.
He is a malevolent and sadistic devil who desires to gain a new body and destroy the entire, manipulating humans and elves into a conflict with each other. He is also the arch-nemesis of Secre Swallowtail, Lemiel Silvamillion Clover and Licht.
He is voiced by Showtaro Morikubo in the Japanese dub, who also voiced Tetta Kisaki in Tokyo Revengers, Brother Spider in Kimetsu no Yaiba, and Akira Otoishi in JoJo's Bizarre Adevnture. In the English dub, he was voiced by Kellen Goff, who also voiced Diavolo in JoJo's Bizarre Adevnture, Hans in Konosuba, Gouketsu in One Punch Man, Fiddlesticks in League of Legends and the Abyss Herald in Genshin Impact.
Appearance[]
Like many devils, Zagred appears as tall, but dark humanoid figure with very long limbs, long horns, pointed ears, sharp claws and toes. Zagred also possesses a long, thin tail with an arrow tip at the end and has large wings.
His upper torso area reveals more of his grey skin coloring, as well as black markings around his eyes and mouth. His eyes appear to be black with red pupils, as well as his teeth being sharp and black.
As a soul, Zagred is surrounded by a dark, purple aura and the only thing visible are his eyes and mouth. His eyes appear to be white in this form, rather than black.
Personality[]
Zagred is a sadistic individual as he takes pleasure in watching humans and elves suffer. He views their conflict as nothing more than enjoyment and that they are his playthings that have their role in his plans. This side of him extends further to the point that he takes delight in breaking apart others, mentally speaking, as he revealed to Patolli how he was a pawn in his plan and that he was ultimately betraying Licht's will, causing Patolli to scream in agony.
Zagred ultimately desires nothing but chaos and does whatever he can to accomplish his goals. He does not value anyone, thus showing that he is cruel and lacks any form of empathy for others. Yami even sensed his malicious and diabolical intentions when examining him through his Ki.
Due to his twisted nature, he is very arrogant as he looks down on both humans and elves alike. When his opponents started to show resistance and push him back, Zagred entered in a fit of rage and desired nothing else but for them to die and perish. His arrogance would ultimately be his downfall, as he would be slain by the combined forces of humans and elves.

Background[]
Zagred as a soul.
Having discarded his body to enter the mortal realm as a spirit, Zagred roamed around the Clover Kingdom, where he took possession of one of the kingdom's ministers and began plotting his scheme. While he set up a trap to prevent the prince, Lemiel, from attending the wedding of Licht and Tetia, Zagred manipulated the humans into taking the magic tool that Lemiel and his assistant, Secre, built and use it to absorb the magic of the Elf Tribe, while also killing them in the process.

This event led to Licht slowly falling into despair, as according to Zagred's plan, but Lemiel was able to arrive at the scene before Licht could be persuaded. Licht realized and understood that Lemiel was not responsible for this and thus, in order to prevent Zagred from taking over his body, he transformed himself into a mindless demon that wreaked havoc across the Clover Kingdom.
Zagred watched in amusement as Lemiel was forced to kill his best friend. Afterwards, Zagred attempted to steal Licht's grimoire, but Secre Swallowtail used the magic stones to seal him within an Eternal Prison. Before the seal was finished, Zagred summoned the magic stones to himself and used them to suspend the elves' souls and to set them and himself to reincarnate in the future.
Reincarnation Arc[]
Years later, after Patolli was reincarnated in the body of William Vangeance, Zagred was released from his imprisonment, but remained hidden for the time behind, while Patolli went on to establish the foundation of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. When Patolli and Rhya successfully reincarnated the other elves, they proceeded to lead their attack onto the Clover Kingdom, causing Zagred to make his move as well.

Upon taking over Baval, Zagred enters in the Vermillion Estate where he plays around with the three Royal Knights present there; Mimosa, En and Kirsch. Once the Shadow Palace was opened, Zagred left Baval and proceeded to enter where he then took possession of Ronne and meets with Patolli and Rhya, who are confronted by Yuno. Initially playing as Ronne himself, he reveals his true colors by backstabbing Rhya, then takes Yuno's magic stone and places it in a pedestal, which releases his true body, allowing him to be free once more.

Upon his release, Zagred expresses excitement as he reveals himself to be the one behind the massacre of the Elf Tribe and that he was the one who reincarnated the elves so that they may unknowingly carry out his plan. Patolli, in denial, attempts to kill him but Zagred ends up sending his attacks back with his Kotodama magic. Yuno manages to save him along with Rhya, but his attacks do little effect to Zagred. Zagred then takes Patolli where he proceeds to mentally torture him, explaining how he was doing his bidding and not Licht's.
As Patolli screams in agony, Asta along with Mimosa eventually arrive into the chamber where Asta and Yuno then attempt to attack Zagred. They manage to nick his arm but Zagred was able to heal it easily. Zagred then takes Patolli's grimoire where he begins to corrupt it and then transforms Patolli into a dark elf, sending him to attack Asta and Yuno.

While Patolli battles Asta and Yuno, Zagred reaches to the top of the chamber where he is confronted by Licht initiating a battle between them. Zagred manages to gain the upper hand as he binds Licht and attempts to impale him with a spear, but Charla manages to redirect the spear back, while Yami frees Licht from his bindings. Yami manages to land hits on Zagred, cutting off his arm and wing, much to Zagred's surprise. Nonetheless, Zagred manages to regenerate and continue to fight. He evades one of Yami's attacks, which was then sent back to him from Licht, doing damage to Zagred's tail. Zagred then decides to put his grimoire to use where he summons magic from the underworld, causing the chamber to be flooded as it spreads out, swallowing everyone within it.
After restoring Patolli back to his normal self, Asta and Yuno, along with Patolli make their way through the chamber where they confront Zagred himself. Along with this, the first Wizard King Lemiel and Secre arrive to the scene. Zagred takes on Licht and Lemiel but the two are able to quickly overwhelm him, due to them being affected by the dark magic of the underworld. Nonetheless, Zagred manages to sever Lemiel's arm and prepares to kill him, but Asta manages to block his attack in time, causing Zagred to then force him back away with his storm swords.

Licht then proceeds to gather magic from the Elf Tribe to charge up his ultimate attack and launches it at Zagred. Zagred's body disintegrates in the process, but his heart managed to stay intact and thus the devil was able to regenerate his entire body. Zagred then attempts to kill Asta with his trident, but Asta nullifies the weapon with his anti-magic. Zagred then forces the young boy back with a horde of monsters.
Together, the combined forces of Asta and Yuno manage to catch Zagred off guard, as Asta was able to pierce through his chest. This did not kill Zagred, however, as he had managed to move his heart from the other side of his body. As a result of being pushed back, Zagred begins to enter in a fit of rage as his body begins to morph various mouths around him. Zagred then proceeds to summon more monsters from his portals for Asta and Yuno to strike down. While Zagred keeps his eye on Yuno fighting, Asta manages to land a sneak attack on the devil, but the attack failed to kill him, due his black form wearing out.

Zagred then prepares to kill the two, but he is interrupted by Yami, who slices him in half with his dark magic. Zagred's body begins to pour and spit out various blood as he shouts out various words in rage. He tries one last attempt at killing his foes by launching iron spears at them, but Yuno manages to blow them away with his magic. Asta, having been enchanted by Secre, regains his black form and uses his giant Black Divider to finish Zagred off. Asta successfully manages to slice through his body.
Upon his defeat, Zagred encounters an unknown devil, who refers to him as his superior. Zagred demands to know who he is, but the devil refuses, saying he feels no need to do so and that Zagred was going to die either way. Zagred then proceeded to disintegrate, being vanquished for good.
Powers and Abilities[]
Being a high-ranking devil, Zagred is an immensely powerful being. It took the combined forces of various humans and elves such as Asta, Yuno, Yami, Licht, Lemiel and Patolli to defeat him.
Powers[]
- Kotodama Magic: Zagred is able to manifest different magic attributes through speech, as well as manifest and manipulate physical and magical objects.
- Reincarnation Magic: Zagred is able to use forbidden magic such as reincarnation, which allows him to revive the dead and transfer their souls into living bodies. His spell, Noah Nephesh, allows him to reincarnate dead beings into different people for centuries later.
Abilities[]
- Possession: As a devil himself, Zagred has the ability to possess and take control of various different beings alike.
Equipment[]
Zagred's grimoire.
- Grimoire: Originally a four-leaf clover grimoire that belonged to Patolli, Zagred later took this same grimoire from him and corrupted it into a five-leaf clover grimoire, giving it a dark aura and presence.
Weaknesses[]
While it may seem very powerful at first, there are some limitations to his Kotodama Magic. He cannot simply tell a person to die and he can't use it to command spells that affect his world's or draw in power.
Trivia[]
- Whilst he is the overarching antagonist of the series, Zagred is not the final boss since his presence and motions sets more events and villains arrive as the effect of his actions.
- Zagred wasn't named in his debut appearance, only referred to as the Devil or the Kotodama Devil at the time, and was only mentioned in name by Lucifero much later.
