Villain Overview
NOTE: This is a combined article of every version of Zamasu (e.g. Present Zamasu, Future Zamasu, even the Dragon Ball Heroes Zamasu).

Mortals are a foolish and ugly mistake that stain the majesty of the cosmos. By eliminating all mortal creatures, we can restore its original splendor and reclaim this perfect creation.
~ Future Zamasu explaining his disdain of mortals and the essence of Project Zero Mortals.

One god is all that the cosmos needs.
~ Zamasu (and Goku Black) after attempting to kill Gowasu.
noicon
My form is justice... and my form is the world. Worship me! Give praise unto me! Me, the beautiful, the sublime. Me, the invincible, the almighty and divine! All hail Zamasu!
~ Fused Zamasu

Zamasu (in Japanese: ザマス), alternatively spelled as Zamas, is the main antagonist of the "Future Trunks" saga in Dragon Ball Super. There are two different timeline incarnations of him working together to exterminate all the mortals in the multiverse, Present Zamasu, also known as Goku Black, and Future Zamasu.

Zamasu was the North Kai of Universe 10, and the apprentice of the Supreme Kai of Universe 10, Gowasu. He believes that mortals are dimwitted and abuse their god-given wisdom for solely on evil and violence, and that the Gods are reprehensible for allowing them to flourish across the multiverse in order to sully its peace and beauty. He is also the arch-nemesis of Future Trunks and the third archenemy of Goku and Vegeta.

He was voiced by Shin'ichirō Miki in Japanese (who also played Lucifer in Shin Megami Tensei III and V, Sephiroth in the Final Fantasy VII series, and Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring, Assassin in Fate/Stay Night and Adam Weishaupt in Senki Zesshou Symphogear AXZ) and James Marsters (who also played Spike in the Buffyverse, Brainiac in Smallville, King Piccolo in Dragonball Evolution, Faro Argyus in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Captain John Hart in Torchwood and Magistrate in Marvel's Runaways) in the English dub.

Personality[]

Future Zamasu[]

Similar to his partner, Goku Black (an alternate Zamasu who stole Goku's body), the future version of Zamasu was distrustful of mortals and gods, however, he described himself as not having the will to act on his desires. When first meeting Goku Black, he expressed shock and horror upon seeing his master, Gowasu, being murdered. After meeting Goku Black, Future Zamasu has truly fallen into the depths of evil though, speaking of humans and of the Saiyans as "mere mortals" who are inferior to him. He also starts showing contempt towards his fellow Gods for their lack of involvement.

Like Goku Black, he has the goal of ridding the entire universe of mortals in the name of "justice", believing them to be the source of all evil, and he refers to a world without them as a "utopia". He also wanted all the gods dead for they did nothing to stop mortal sins. He was briefly shocked and horrified when Goku Black killed Gowasu but soon got over it.

Future Zamasu also seems to have a deep hatred for Goku, as he considers killing him as his main goal and something only he should do (a trait his past counterpart is slowly developing). While battling Goku and Future Trunks, he constantly speaks about how humans misuse their "god-given wisdom" for their own personal gain. Also, Future Zamasu refers to his immortal body as befitting for him.

Despite his resentment towards mortals, Zamasu does imply that he knows what he does makes him as bad if not even worse then them. This further proves that he likely kills mortals out for the sake of his ego. Trunks even calls him out for this before defeating him. This is one of many signs that show that Zamasu never cared about anything but his own vision.

He was disgusted by mortals in both their bodies and behaviour, as he found their appearances ugly by definition and their patterns of action destructive, regardless of reality; hence, when Bulma pretended to flirt with him to delay him, his usual stoic purely kai-self displayed a level of anger and revulsion closer to his more emotional Goku Black counterpart.

Identical to his timeline duplicate Black, Future Zamasu displayed excessive narcissism, which was shown upon his alliance with Goku Black as the two embraced; despite his variant's mortal body, he was content to hug him, since his egomania transcended his usual bigotry, thus illustrating that he understands the concept of accepting someone beyond their physical form, yet only reserves that as an exception for himself. Therefore exaggerates his hypocrisy and psychosis.

The stark contrast between Future Zamasu and Goku Black is that, despite both of them despising humanity and believed in their twisted sense of justice, Future Zamasu is obsessed with his own immortality and often showing his sociopathic and egotistical attitude with long speeches; his penchant for monologues also reinforced his narcissism, as upon realising that his enemies weren't even listening to him, he admits that he doesn't need an audience, due to enjoying his own self-indulgences.

He is fully confident that his immortality will be a great help towards his power, whereas Black is more focusing on fighting for a thirst of power and scoffed at immortality (ironically, Black was influenced by his Saiyan genes, hence he was descending into the "barbarism" he accused mortals of solely undertaking). Despite this, they do work well together and proved a deadly team even before fusing. In a sense, due to Future Zamasu's sociopathic nature, one can say that he is even worse than Black considering he clearly takes more pleasure in making mortals suffer.

Merged Zamasu[]

Mortals, you must be expunged. A pure and perfect multiverse... MADE CLEAN BY ZAMASU'S HAND!!!
~ Fused Zamasu's emotions getting the best of him.

Retaining his arrogance and narcissism of both Goku Black and Future Zamasu, Fused Zamasu arguably shares more personality and traits of Future Zamasu instead of Black. However, he does retain a few of Black’s traits, such as his mood swings and his obsession with Goku. Upon his fusion, Zamasu declared himself to be a full embodiment of justice and beauty, desiring worship and reverence from mortals as well as declaring himself to be the most powerful god of them all.

He started repeatedly and consistently vocalizing his divine brilliance and absolute authority, frequently using the terms connected to divine and holy elements, such as "divine", "judgement", and "absolution" and even named his techniques with those terms. He essentially had an eerily serene atmosphere, however, this wouldn't last long before an increasingly severe collapse into mania.

The true nature of Merged Zamasu was interiorly unstable, and according to Gowasu, it was due to Zamasu's own obsession with the contradiction between gods and mortals, as well as the inability to accept the similarities between them. It was soon shown during the climax when Zamasu was scarred in half-side of his face from Goku's attacks, and from disgust about feeling doubt about his divinity, he had to mutate himself with the light of Justice, showing his body with one side normal and another side rotten and monstrous. This is a crucial evidence indicating that the fusion between the immortal (Shinjin) body of Future Zamasu and the mortal (Saiyan) body of Goku Black was in fact extremely unstable, both exteriorly and interiorly.

Upon his mutation, Fused Zamasu turned more maniacal and unhinged, prone to furious outbursts. During his attack against Vegito, Zamasu became less cool and more dangerous, having himself reduced into nothing but a savage narcissist who started to scream in agony and babbled about the perfection of his own godhood, thus ironically becoming as violent and destructive as the "hateful", "violent", and "destructive" humanity he wanted to destroy in order to achieve his own utopia.

When Vegito pointed out that the Project Zero Mortals was now impossible due to him sharing alternate Goku's mortal body, Fused Zamasu scoffed and laughed it off, pontificating about how he always intended to fuse with his consciousness in a mortal body out of an extremely irrational self-righteousness to make a statement criticising the "evil" of mortals and the "failure" of the kais; yet this supposed statement would be to an empty multiverse, therefore showing it was another example of his self-aggrandising for his own sake.

He was so moved by his own "sacrifice," that he began sobbing to Vegito's bafflement, yet Fused Zamasu would only inflate his own ego again by stating he was proud to shed tears for his self-serving mission. Regardless, the reveal that he always intended to keep the mortal body of Goku Black in one form or another was just more evidence of his inherent hypocrisy; he would violate his own "sacred" aim because it would allow greater power for himself, which was also something he condemned the Saiyans for doing.

Even before he was physically destroyed, Zamasu cried in despair and was still drowned in his obsession of his so-called sense of justice, claiming it was for the greater good of the universe. Due to only ever cooperating as two versions of himself, he couldn't understand the gathering of so many different energies shared by the mortals to Future Trunks; the hybrid Saiyan then accurately condemned Zamasu for only ever believing in himself, therefore could never comprehend the true nature of mortals. When cut in half, Zamasu's ego couldn't accept he was bested by mortals, thus he broke into psychotic laughter before screaming as his physical form was annihilated.

Infinite Zamasu[]

After turning into his incorporeal form, Zamasu ultimately became a purely aggressive savage entity that roamed across the entire multiverse and cackling insanely above the sky, destroying everything in sight and attempted to become justice and order itself, finally showing Zamasu's true nature as nothing but a hypocritical, loathsome, insane, and openly violent monster. Ironically, his actions had turned him into a greater threat to every universe than any mortal ever could, with his deranged will potentially polluting every reality. Although, he appeared to lose the capacity for speech or even rational thinking, thus instead of prolonging his cruelty to sate his sadism, he instead went to immediately attempting to wipe out all life, with insane laughter as the only sign he had a semblance of awareness left. However, he is still capable of showing fear, as he reacts in horror to Future Zen-Oh about to erase him and screams as he is erased.

Biography[]

Present Zamasu[]

Zamas

Present Zamasu

Zamasu was originally the apprentice to Gowasu, the Supreme Kai Of Universe 10. Unlike his master, Zamasu refused to believe mortals could ever change their ways after many observations and attempted to convince Gowasu to end their existence, but was rejected and forced nuture and get to know mortal better so that he could become a true Supreme Kai, which Zamasu reluctantly agreed.

Beerus, Whis, and Goku then go to see him and his master, Gowasu to discuss the Time Rings. Goku spars with Zamasu and defeats him. He offers his hand to Zamasu, but the latter refuses, and even tried to kill Goku, until stopped by Gowasu. Zamasu's defeat at Goku's hands would only further his hatred of mortals as he felt that no mortal should be able to fight on-par with a God.

Zamasu later suggests to Gowasu that they wipe out the primitive and violent mortals on Planet Babari. Gowasu, however, states that only Gods of Destruction can carry out that act. This secretly drives Zamasu to hate the gods as well for not doing anything about mortals. Gowasu then uses the Time Ring to allow him and Zamasu to travel to the future of Babari. He also gives Zamasu a Potara Earring that makes him a Kaioshin, as apprentices cannot go.

The two fist-bump and say "1000 years", transporting them to the future of Babari, where the planet's natives are fighting each other. This only serves to further Zamasu's belief that mortals are all bad. A Babari attacks the two, but Zamasu slices it in half, against Gowasu's wishes.

Returning from the future, Zamasu returns the earring Gowasu loaned him and debates his master on whether they can learn from mortals. Gowasu, however, rebukes him for killing the Babari and letting his hatred for mortals control his emotions. This response likely increased Zamasu's disgust towards his mentor and sparked his decision to kill him.

Sometime later, Zamasu gets Gowasu some tea. Gowasu is watching the fight between Goku and Hit on GodTube. Zamasu sees the Super Dragon Balls on the monitor and asks Gowasu what they are. When he got his answer, he became interested in the wish orbs. He then arrives in Zuno's place in Universe 7 and asks him about the Super Dragon Balls and Son Goku.

Deciding that all mortals and gods are worthless, Zamasu plots to kill Gowasu and take his Potara earrings in order to inherit his position as Supreme Kai. However, he is stopped by Whis who quickly places a kitten mitten on his hand to block his God Slicer. Gowasu questions him as Zamasu walks backwards, only to bump into Beerus who reveals to Gowasu that Zamasu is trying to kill him. Whis then reveals his God Slicer as they reveal Zamasu's plan to Gowasu, who confirms this afterward. Questioning how they deducted his plan, Goku reveals he traveled to the future to see the destruction and death he caused, which delights Zamasu and prepares to kill them all to make sure his dream comes true. He is then stopped by Beerus again, who hakais him out of existence, destroying him for good.

Future Zamasu[]

Much like his present counterpart, Future Zamasu was originally the apprentice to Gowasu, who held the same views on mortals as his present counterpart. As time passed on his hatred for gods and mortals grew to the point where he even wanted to kill Gowasu in order to take his place and exterminate them himself, however he didn’t have the will to act on his desires. One day, while bringing tea, he finds Gowasu murdered by a man wearing dark clothing, who would explain that he is the Zamasu from the past. According to the past Zamasu, he traveled to the future to recruit his future self to cleanse the world of gods and mortals. Zamasu agrees to ally with his past self.

The Zamasus would use the Super Dragon Balls to wish for Future Zamasu becoming immortal, then going one year into the future to wish for the Super Dragon Balls to be destroyed. Future Zamasu would remain behind the scenes while Present Zamasu would go from planet to planet killing the inhabitants while claiming to be Son Goku. When he arrived on Earth, he was given the name Goku Black.

Zama

Future Zamasu

Future Zamasu later appears in Future Trunks's timeline, wearing a green earring instead of a pair of orange ones, giving him the rank of Supreme Kai. Zamasu stopped Goku Black from using his Kamehameha, reminding Black of his promise to allow him to kill Goku.

He then engages Goku in combat along with Goku Black, who claims that his body wants Goku and he is unable to resist it. Zamasu says that it’s not a problem as he says Saiyans "are the biggest blight in the entire cosmos" and suggests that they kill them together. Future Trunks aids Goku in his fight, Goku fought Black and Trunks fought Zamasu.

Goku is overpowered by Goku Black and Trunks manages to stab Zamasu but his wound healed (due to having an immortal body). He then holds down both Goku and Trunks so that Black's Kamehameha blast can hit them. With Goku, Future Trunks, and Vegeta defeated by the duo, the Resistance saves them and then the three of them flee to the past. Goku Black is angered but Zamasu then says that they will return.

Dragon-ball-super-episode-61

Zamasu and Goku Black.

Goku, along with Beerus, Whis, and the Universe 7 Supreme Kai would go to Universe 10 and stopping the Zamasu of the present from killing Gowasu, ending with Zamasu being destroyed by Beerus. However, this does not put an end to Future Zamasu, who is still working with Black in the future. When Goku, Trunks, Vegeta and Bulma traveled to the future, he and Black detected the former three's ki and went to confront them. There, Black revealed his origins to the Saiyans and two battle them, forcing Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma to retreat while Trunks holds the two Kaioshin off.

Goku and his friends later return, having learned the Demon Containment Wave technique to contain Zamasu. However, Goku Black distracts Goku and Vegeta with his newfound powers, forcing Trunks to learn the technique in just a few minutes. To buy time for Trunks to practice the technique, Bulma attempts to distract Zamasu by seducing him. However, Zamasu is not amused, and quickly casts Bulma aside.

Merged Zamasu[]

Fusion Zamasu !11

Fusion Zamasu summoning a halo.

Before Zamasu can kill Bulma, Trunks and Mai arrive, and Trunks uses the Evil Containment Wave to seal Zamasu in a pot. However, the three then realize Goku forgot the seal to place on the pot, allowing Zamasu to break free. Sensing something wrong with Zamasu's energy, Goku Black goes to see what's going wrong. After Zamasu tells him that they underestimated the true power of humans, the two fuse into Fused Zamasu, with Zamasu proclaiming himself to be the most powerful god.

Fused Zamasu summons a halo and begins launching energy blasts randomly. In order to defeat Goku and Vegeta, Zamasu creates a large energy sphere and launches it at the two Saiyans. However, Goku launches it back at him, resulting in the right half of his body and face becoming horribly disfigured. As the battle goes on, Fused Zamasu's body starts to become more horribly unstable as a result of both Goku Black's mortality and Zamasu's immortality contradicting each other, as well as Zamasu's undying hatred for mortals and the contradictions of the gods.

In order to defeat Fused Zamasu, Goku and Vegeta fuse into Vegito. Initially, they fight Fused Zamasu evenly, though Zamasu appears to gain the upper hand when he knocks Vegito onto the ground and charges at him with an energy blade. However, Vegito summons an energy blade of his own and impales Zamasu through his chest, informing him that he's not immortal because his body is fused with Goku's. Zamasu responds by telling him that by taking Goku's body, he has repurposed Goku's and the god's sins for a greater purpose.

Zamasu then frees himself and inflates his body to give him more power. Though Vegito appears to gain the upper hand, the time limit on the Potara earrings Goku and Vegeta used wears off early because of the energy Vegito used, resulting in them unfusing. However, Future Trunks arrives wielding his sword, which now having an energy blade, and fights Zamasu. Eventually, using the energy gathered from the people of Earth to charge up his sword. Goku and Vegeta also give Future Trunks their energy, to provide him with the boost he needs defeat Fused Zamasu. Trunks then stabs Fused Zamasu with his massive energy sword and cuts him in half, resulting in the end of both Goku Black and Zamasu. Or so they thought.

ZamasuPlanet

Zamasu absorbing Earth.

Zamasu took the opportunity to shed his body. His essence then enveloped the Earth and began assimilating the entire universe in order to become order and justice itself and kill all mortals and gods, leaving him the only life form in existence. Goku, Trunks and Vegeta attempted to stop Zamasu using a Kamehameha, Galick Gun and Final Flash respectively, but to no avail. Zamasu's faces in the sky then began firing lasers at the Earth, killing all life on the planet except for the heroes, who were protected by a dome created by the Kais and began to invade the present timeline.

However, while searching for a Senzu bean, Goku came across the button Zen-Oh had given him to summon him at any time. Goku then used the button to summon the Zen-Oh of Future Trunks's universe. Goku directed Zen-Oh to Zamasu, who had rapidly overtaken the multiverse and even began to affect Goku's timeline. Zen-Oh then used his power to destroy the entire multiverse, wiping out Zamasu once and for all while Zamasu could do nothing but scream in insane horror as he is erased from existence permanently, finally destroying him and ending his reign of terror on both the universe and the multiverse once and for all.

ZamasuVortex

Zamasu's essence spreading throughout the Multiverse.

Goku, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Bulma and Future Mai then returned to Goku's timeline. In order to be with their friends again, Trunks and Mai traveled to a timeline where Zamasu and Goku Black had not yet attacked to warn the Beerus of that timeline about Zamasu, leaving his goals for conquest, chaos and power in vain.

Merged Zamasu (Dragon Ball Heroes)[]

Note: From here on his appearance in Super Dragon Ball Heroes is described, however it is not official.

Despite to have been erased, Merged Zamasu was somehow brought back by Fu (possibly due to the latter's manipulation of the timeline), captured and sent to the Prison Planet, and interned within the Core Area. He joins the Core Area Warriors, seeking to continue Project Zero Mortals as well as see Zen-Oh destroyed.

To the surprise of Goku, Merged Zamasu appears alongside the other Core Area Warriors and uses his telekinesis to retrieve Cumber, before he and the others teleport away.

Merged Zamasu appears along with Hearts and watches his allies, Oren and Kamin, battle against Vegeta and Future Trunks. Hearts tells him that they hadn't planned on dealing with those from Universe 7 until a later time and asks Merged Zamasu to refrain from getting involved until after Zeno has been defeated. Mergeed Zamasu goes along with Hearts to Sadala and when Hearts mentions going to the next Universe, Merged Zamasu warns him not to order him around.

Nevertheless, Merged Zamasu goes with Hearts and the other Core Area Warriors to Universe 11, confronting Jiren. Both fighters initially dodge each other's attacks, but Merged Zamasu grows angry when Jiren scrapes Zamasu's hair, berating him as a mortal for daring to lay hands on a deity. Their fight is interrupted by the arrival of Goku, who Zamasu is shocked to see accompanied by the Grand Minister. Zamasu is further astounded by Goku's effortless usage of Ultra Instinct, and despite making a beeline for the Saiyan, is easily punched away Jiren, who reveals his superior strength by knocking him into a rock wall and blasting him repeatedly. Merged Zamasu regenerates, boasting that he can recover from any damage, leading to Jiren wondering what the extent of his invincibility is. After Shin appears and teleports the Saiyans away, Zamasu recognizes the Supreme Kai.

Merged Zamasu, along with the other members of the Core Area Warriors, head to Universe 7, where they confront the Dragon Team. Zamasu soon finds himself in the midst of battle against Super Saiyan Future Trunks and shortly after Super Saiyan Vegeta as well. Trunks asks him why after previously trying to exterminate all mortals before, would he now team up with one, but Zamasu refuses to answer him. Later on, he watches as Goku battles and kills Kamioren and after Hearts takes the now completed Universe Seed from them and becomes one with it, Zamasu remarks that he was eagerly waiting for that moment.

While Hearts is merging with the Universe Seed, Zamasu claims that no one will be able to stop Zero Mortals Plan after Hearts destroys Zeno, and he defends Hearts from the members of the Dragon Team, taking each down with a single blow except for Goku. Goku then attacks Zamasu; however, Zamasu quickly overpowers Goku and puts him into a painful body lock. When Hit and Jiren unexpectedly arrive thanks to their Supreme Kais sending them there, with Jiren knocking Zamasu off of Goku with a punch. Zamasu then prepares to battle the Dragon Team and their allies. However, when Ultimate Hearts emerges, he paralyzes Zamasu with his telekinesis, before encasing him within an energy cube, reminding the seemingly immortal Kai that his plan was to destroy all the gods. Hearts proceeds to shrink the gravity cube down into nothingness and disintegrates Zamasu completely, and Zamasu becomes his first victim.

In the manga is different; following the defeat of Kamioren at the hands of Jiren, Fused Zamasu heads to the now completed Universe Seed to get its power for himself. However, he is suddenly turned into glass by Lagss for his treachery and then sliced in half by Future Trunks. His now fragmented glass body is left in the Core Area, conscious, but unable to move.

Powers and Abilities[]

Like his counterpart Goku Black, Future Zamasu is a fighting prodigy and by far the most powerful Kai that ever lived. However he has become even more powerful then when Black was a Kai, as he can fight on par with Super Saiyan Blue Goku when he is at full power, as well as stand his ground against Super Saiyan 2 Future Trunks. Zamasu also share a similar ki signature with his partner in crime, Goku Black, although Black happens to still be superior in strength.

Fused Zamasu's power is infinitely higher than that of Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks' full power combined. His power is stated to have no end by Gowasu, meaning that if Zeno-Sama had not destroyed him, he would have grown in power indefinitely until he surpassed all the Gods and Angels. He can break all the bones in Goku and Vegeta's arms just by catching their fists and crushing them slightly, and he effortlessly breaks Future Trunks' sword in two.

It took Goku's most powerful Kamehameha ever (resulting in his arms being broken) to actually cause some damage to his face, after which an angry Zamasu simply broke his leg with another crush of his hand. Goku using Kaioken was able to knock him to the Earth and shatter his Halo, although he broke his other leg as a result, after which Zamasu grew enraged and increased his power far beyond what he had been using before.

Mutated Fused Zamasu is powerful enough to fight equally with Super Saiyan Blue Vegito, who fights him all-out. He eventually increases his size and while it comes at the cost of his speed, it buffs his power even higher than before. His able to put so much force behind some punches that it creates a tunnel of air pressure that carries an impact with the same destructive power as a direct hit from his fist.

Infinite Zamasu is so powerful that he can absorb the entire world and even the entire multiverse and then spread into other timelines beyond, such as the Present Timeline, however even he is no match for Zeno, who uses his ultimate attack to erase him for good. Although, had Zeno not been summoned, even he may have been subjected to Zamasu's insanity once it had encompassed all of creation.

Quotes[]

Present Timeline's Zamasu[]

Zamasu: Master Gowasu… there's something that's been weighing on my mind lately.
Gowasu: Go on. Tell me.
Zamasu: These mortals we watch… are they creatures truly worthy of our protection, sir?
Gowasu: Huh?
Zamasu: With respect, I've observed more mortal dealings than I care to count. They thrive, quarrel, perish, all on an endless loop. And so it seems to me for them to keep doing this is the height of futility.
Gowasu: That is the path mortals must take.
Zamasu: What sense does it make for us to protect these flawed beings when they persistently repeat the same tragic mistakes? Would it not be more merciful on our part to put a halt to their hopeless cycles once and for all?
~ Zamasu's first doubts about mortals.
Oh, I've learned a lesson. Mortals are even more dangerous than I thought… know this, Goku. I will never forget you.
~ Zamasu after his sparring match with Goku.
Disgusting...
~ Zamasu watching over the denizens of Planet Barbari.
This proves it. As long as mortals exist, the multiverse will have no peace.
~ Zamasu's inner thoughts after traveling 1000 years into the future with Gowasu to see the development of the Barbari race.
They take what they want by savage force. Their so-called society's based on nothing else. They possess neither justice nor order. They were gifted with life, brains capable of wisdom, yet they waste it completely. Should these gifts not be taken back?
~ Zamasu's suggestion to Gowasu after watching the development of the Barbari race.
Zamasu: Master Gowasu, you have said something often. "To make mistakes, but learn from them, thus forging a better world: that is the essence of a mortal spirit." But as far as I can see, mortals do not learn this way at all. Planet Barbari is no outlier, Master. You've seen this countless times before.
Gowasu: Patience, Zamasu. Every seed needs time to grow.
Zamasu: Gardens are tended, not just watched. Should a gardener not pluck the weeds? When I was invited here, I thought you would teach me divine justice, but all you seem to do watch while these monsters stain existence with each other's blood!
~ Zamasu's beliefs that mortals do not change, along with his first mention of "divine justice".
You give corruption far too much credit. Evil does not inform good. It sullies it, like the Barbari sullied their world with violence, and that arrogant Goku sullied this sacred ground by swinging his fists at a god. Mortals receive the divine gift of intellect, the potential for wisdom, but they misuse to destroy the beauty of creation. Mortals do not succumb to evil, they are the evil. They create it and spread it with minds they shouldn't possess. How can we call ourselves gods if we watch this plight and do nothing to stop it?
~ Present Zamasu's retort to Gowasu about good and evil being balanced by the concept of justice.
noicon
A mortal... a mere mortal taking divine power for himself...
~ Zamasu watching Goku transform into Super Saiyan Blue during his fight with Hit on GodTube.
I have realized I was mistaken after all. I've had some more time to reconsider what you've told me after our trip into the Barbari's future, about the interplay between good and evil. You told me that one can succumb to evil and then come out with a new understanding. Thanks to you, I see the role dark deeds can play. Such ugly acts can be necessary to achieve a more perfect end.
~ Zamasu tricking Gowasu into believing he has finally understood the essence of mortals in order to catch his master off guard and kill him.
You have misunderstood me, Master. There is no other leaf, there is only divine justice, and it demands that I serve it well. Evil must be destroyed, no matter the price.
~ Zamasu showing his true colors after his plan to kill Gowasu was foiled by Beerus and Whis.
Zamasu: I assume Zuno tipped you off, though I admit I'm impressed you deduced my whole plan from what I asked him.
Goku: We didn't have to guess much at all. I saw the future with my own eyes!
Zamasu: What's that? You traveled to the future?
Goku: Yeah, that's right, I did. And thanks to you, whole cities were in ruins. Countless lives were completely destroyed!
Zamasu: Is that a fact, Goku? That means in this future, my dreams have come true... well, all the more reason why I can't let you interlopers get in the way of them now!
~ Zamasu's final words before attempting to attack Goku, only to be erased from existence by Beerus.

Future Timeline's Zamasu[]

I thought we had an agreement. Wasn’t I supposed to be the one... who gets the honor of destroying him?
~ Zamasu’s debut in the anime.
My wait is almost over. Soon the world I've been dreaming of for so long will be made manifest; a truly just and perfect utopian existence. Mortals are unnecessary, and more than that, unwelcome in my paradise.
~ Zamasu's hatred of mortals.
Saiyans are the worst blight in the entire cosmos. They clearly acquire their strength in inverse proportion to their mental maturity, and so they deserve punishment most of all. What do you say we destroy them together?
~ Zamasu’s disdain of Saiyans.
How disappointing you ungrateful and barbaric creatures are! The gods gave you minds capable of true wisdom, yet you waste it on self-interest and war!
~ Zamasu to Trunks
I’ve taken godhood to a new level. Divinity made perfect, with a body that befits a Kai... one that is invincible.
~ Zamasu reveling in his immortality.
As a matter of fact, dear Saiyans, I thank you. Your strength will not save you, but it does serve a purpose: it reveals my full glory. An invincible body that not even a Saiyan's power can mar. Are you now keenly aware of your own powerlessness in this battle, Saiyan? The attacks your race has relied on to spread misery across the stars can do nothing against a god like me. And yet, you still have a desire to fight me, don't you? Go ahead, challenge me all you like until you realize your sheer impotence.
~ Zamasu mocking Trunks after his attacks did nothing to the god's immortal body.
I want the both of you to listen to me very carefully here. For your persistent insolence and repeatable affronts toward a deity, you will now reap THE SWIFT AND SEVERE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS!!!
~ Zamasu to Goku and Trunks
It’s ironic, isn’t it? Here we are destroying all mortals, and yet we require mortal power to succeed.
~ Zamasu to Goku Black
Together, for justice!
~ Zamasu and Goku Black after the latter killed Gowasu.
This destruction was unfortunate, but necessary to achieve our virtuous plan: Project Zero Mortals!
~ Zamasu to Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks.
I thought for sure you would have asked by now, Goku. Aren’t you concerned about your family?
~ Zamasu’s harrowing question to Goku.
Goku Black & Zamasu: We are curing creation from a sickness, saving it from the scourge of mortal kind!
Zamasu: Open your eyes! You are a vile sinner!
Goku Black: You both enabled and inspired us!
Zamasu: You helped to light the flame of our justice, you helped to launch Project Zero Mortals!
Goku Black: So the next time you mourn your people, remember they’re dead because of you!
~ Goku Black and Zamasu passing the blame for Project Zero Mortals onto Trunks to psychologically torture him.
With each hit I overflow with joy, feasting on my own perfection!
~ Zamasu’s masochism caused by his immortal body.
Mortals do not tell gods what to do!
~ Zamasu after Goku yells at him to fight.
Just as we foresaw, fighting this formidable Saiyan blight has carried us both to new heights! This proves our transformative power! Our destiny is to cast judgement on all of creation!
~ Zamasu after seeing the rift in time created by Goku Black’s scythe.
”The power of mortals?” Is that a joke?! I’ll show you what happens when worthless beings speak down to a god!
~ Zamasu while being hit by the Evil Containment Wave.
It... it seems many of our assumptions about mortals were badly mistaken. They are much more than just insignificant worms. If we're not careful, our dream of utopia is going to be ruined before it's even begun.
~ A rattled Zamasu to Goku Black after escaping the Evil Containment Wave, warning him not to underestimate mortals.
Goku Black: You pathetic lowly mortals...
Zamasu: Show your reverence and bow down... before our splendor.
~ Zamasu and Goku Black before fusing.

As Fused Zamasu[]

I can feel it, two glorious and unparalleled powers dissolving into one within me.
~ Fused Zamasu basking in his newfound power.
Behold this ultimate vessel, the sword and shield made one. Its strength knows no limits. The power coursing through me is exceptional. Glorious. Absolute. Stare in awe, I am justice incarnate!
~ Zamasu attacking with his newly created halo.
Hearken upon me! I am the brightly glowing sun in the sky which illuminates this world! And all shall soon know that my brilliance is justice! I, the god Zamasu, am the universal wisdom, the universal truth, and yes, the universal power! All those whom my light shines upon shall be obliterated! At long last, on this most glorious day, Project Zero Mortals will culminate with the eradication of all remaining life on this planet! And then, a great utopia will rise from the ashes!
~ Zamasu's grandiose monologue.
The lack of reverence you two exhibit in trying to lay hands upon a god, it is the worst kind of sin. Gods are meant to look down on mortals. You insignificant beings are not worthy of touching our flesh so casually. And yet, in spite of that fact, you have committed countless acts of humiliation against me. Transgressions that are punishable by death!
~ Fused Zamasu defeating Goku and Vegeta.
Your arrogance has spelled the end for your Earth... don’t you see?!
~ Fused Zamasu to Trunks
YOU WILL NEVER BEST ME, YOU FILTHY MORTAL!!!
~ Fused Zamasu’s anger towards Goku’s resistance.
GOOOOOOKUUUUUUUUU!!!!!! RAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! Light of Divine Justice! Strike at me now! A cowering god who appeases evil can never prevail!
~ Fused Zamasu calling on the Light of Divine Justice to empower him.
Potara earrings! Does the mimicry have no end? You pathetic mortals always try to emulate the divine. Now why is that? Is it because we gods are so wondrous? Are you coveting our undeniable beauty? I understand, yet it's so tragic. Your mimicry is doomed to fail. Acts of gods are beautiful because we are inherently pure, while mortal endeavors will inevitably become wicked, corrupted and marred by sin!
~ Zamasu upon seeing Vegito, believing the fusion is a crude attempt to imitate the gods.
I don't need your prostrations, mortal. I just NEED YOU DEAD!
~ Fused Zamasu's retort to Vegito's taunt, reinforcing his solipsism.
You mortals are all alike, led astray by your ignorance. You think that's a revelation, that Goku's body will always be a part of me? Of course he will, such was my desire! You are mortals, Saiyans, yet you've gained divine power. You're stronger than most deities now. Thus those who created this cosmos have made something they could not control. And if one can't control a world, one can't be called a god of it, making Saiyans the ultimate symbol of the failure of the Kais.
~ Zamasu’s speech on mortal sins and divine failure.
Zamasu: And so, by incorporating Goku's flesh into my being, I have assumed both the sins of mortal kind and the failure of divinity so they may never be repeated! That is the duty of a true god.
Vegito: Got an answer for everything, huh?
Zamasu: Of course, that is why I do this. For the good of the cosmos, for creation!
Vegito: Are you seriously crying?
Zamasu: I am, and proudly so! My tears shall sanctify this blighted world!
~ Fused Zamasu gets emotional talking about his motivations.
Zamasu: Behold, my perfect divinity!

Vegito: Be perfect in Hell!

~ Fused Zamasu proclaiming his perfection, which Vegito mocked upon another attack.
BACK FOR MORE, TRUNKS?! YET AGAIN?!
~ Fused Zamasu's rage after Trunks saves Goku and Vegeta
Tell me, how will you escape my justice next?! Will you run to the past begging for help from your pathetic mortal herd? Or this time will you try the future? HOW WILL YOU COMPENSATE FOR YOUR WEAKNESS NOW?!
~ Fused Zamasu mocking Future Trunks for his weakness as a mortal.
But I don't understand, how is it this strong?! It feels chaotic, so many different energies melded together!
~ Fused Zamasu struggling to comprehend the Sword of Hope made from the unity of mortals, which challenges his belief of them being too selfish to cooperate.
How dare you strike a god and retaliate against justice!
~ Fused Zamasu enraged at Future Trunks overpowering him.
But how?! IT CAN'T BE!!!
~ Zamasu before being sliced in half by Trunks
A righteous god... defeated by a mortal... it's sacrilege! It cannot be!
~ Fused Zamasu's last words, before breaking into insane laughter, followed by screaming as his body atomised

As Infinite Zamasu[]

Parallel worlds are not the only thing we’re going to destroy! Are you trying to escape with your time machine again?
~ Infinite Zamasu surrounding Goku and his company in the manga.
Zamasu: Past or not, go ahead and run wherever you want! I won’t stop chasing you no matter where you go!
Shin: Chase us? That’s crazy! You can’t use the ring of time to travel to the past!
Zamasu: Who said we’d use the ring of time? I have a time machine of my own! The one that was made in Universe 12!
Future Trunks: What did he say?!
Gowasu: Dammit! Zamasu... to think he’d remember that!
Zamasu: That’s right! It was you, Gowasu, who told me about it. The Lord of Lords from Universe 12 was taking good care of it. This means that the Zero Mortal Project can be executed in the past! And to start, I shall visit the world where you all came from... and terminate mankind there!
~ Zamasu’s devious plan to kill all mortals in the manga.
This is impossible!!! My plan to—GAAAAAAAAH!!!!!
~ Zamasu's last words before being erased by Zen-Oh in the manga.

Transformations[]

Super Saiyan Rosé[]

Because Goku Black was still Super Saiyan Rosé during the fusion, Fused Zamasu’s base form is a permanent Super Saiyan Rosé state. Normally this would cause massive stress to the body and reduce the fusion’s lifespan, Future Zamasu’s Immortality eliminates that problem.

Half-Corrupted[]

As a result of Goku Black’s mortal body interfering with Future Zamasu’s Immortality, Fused Zamasu couldn’t completely heal himself and as such, half of his face became a gooey purple substance, this later spread to his arm after striking himself with the Light of Justice, causing his arm to become enlarged. Fused Zamasu gained a significant increase in power.

Gigantification[]

In this form (used against Vegito), Merged Zamasu gains a significant increase in power and height, at the cost of his speed. His body becomes more corrupted, his deformed right arm grows even larger, reaching over 32 feet tall.

Zamasu’s Techniques[]

  • God Split Cutter: One of Zamasu's most notable attacks. Zamasu creates a field of purple energy around his right hand, creating a powerful Ki Blade that can be fired or used to block attacks.
  • Kai Kai: Like the other Kais, Zamasu can travel anywhere he desires. Including other universes.
  • Immortality: The ability to not die of both natural and unnatural causes. In addition to no longer able to feel pain, Zamasu can heal from any wound instantly. This allows him to shield Goku Black from otherwise powerful attacks and allows Goku Black to not worry about Zamasu’s safety if he’s in the blast radius. However in the manga version, it is implied by Goku Black that Zamasu is no longer capable of growing in strength due to immortality.

Merged Zamasu's Techniques[]

  • Barrier of Light: Zamasu combines both two sources of his power and a halo of light that appears behind his back.
  • Wall of Light: Fused Zamasu creates a huge purple entity from pure Ki, resembling a monstrous bird. Despite its ethereal nature, the entity appears to be its own being, as it roars occasionally. It can both attack and protect. Anything that touches it will be eliminated; knocked out.
  • Lightning of Absolution: A technique primarily subsuming that of firing/afflicting purple bolts of lightning from either his Ring or Wall of Light onto his enemies.
  • Blades of Judgement: From his Barrier of Light on his back, Fused Zamasu fires a barrage of red energy blades that can strike the opponent. If any of the blades hit the ground, they will burst in a destructive explosion.
  • Holy Wrath: Fused Zamasu's ultimate attack; It is Zamasu creating a small sun-like energy sphere in his hand and then throws it at his opponent, expanding it into a huge energy ball. It is used in a similar fashion as Broly's Omega Blaster attack.
  • Semi-Immortality: Inherited from Future Zamasu, Fused Zamasu is unable to die of natural causes, however because Goku Black was not immortal, Fused Zamasu is capable of being killed and his healing is not as thorough. Unlike Future Zamasu’s complete immortality however, Fused Zamasu is still able to grow in power. He even became powerful enough to appear across several different universes at once resulting in Zeno having to erase him to put him down for good.

Trivia[]

  • Zamasu is the second Kai to turn evil. The first was Demigra.
  • Future Zamasu is the second Dragon Ball villain to successfully become completely immortal via the Dragon Balls, the first being Garlic Jr..
  • Zamasu (as Goku Black) is the third villain in the series to kill Goku, after Piccolo and Cell. However, Zamasu is the first villain to have intentionally killed Goku, whereas the previous two deaths were due to Goku being willing to sacrifice himself to save Earth.
  • Zamasu's primary approach into combating others is using his infamously dangerous Energy Blade.
  • Zamasu could be one of the most evil and insane version of any villain gods to show up alongside Goku Black. Most of the deities that are villains do have morality, but Zamasu has none, even more so Zen-oh who was utterly disgusted by his atrocious crimes.
  • Zamasu (alongside Goku Black) are the first villains in the Dragon Ball franchise who proclaims their goals and horrid deeds are for the sake of justice.
  • Zamasu is easily considered the darkest villain to appear in the Dragon Ball franchise, due to his personality of hatred to mortal kind, along with his actions of not just murdering Gowasu (his former master), but also revealing his true nature in front of Goku and ended up being destroyed by Beerus.
  • Overall, Zamasu and Goku Black are the archenemies of Future Trunks due to murdering his mother and destroying his world, even more so than the Androids and Cell combined.
  • Because Goku Black was still Super Saiyan Rosé during the fusion, Fused Zamasu’s base form is a permanent Super Saiyan Rosé state. Normally this would cause massive stress to the body and reduce the fusion’s lifespan, Future Zamasu’s Immortality eliminates that problem. That said, it also results in him being in constant strain as he shows signs of not being able to fight as good as he normally would.
  • In the Funimation dub, Future Zamasu's immortality is referred to as invincibility, invulnerability, and indestructibility.
  • Fused Zamasu is one of the four most powerful Saiyan fusions ever, alongside Vegito, Kefla and Gogeta.
  • Zamasu's English voice actor, James Marsters, previously played another green-skinned villain with pointed ears as King Piccolo in the 2009 film Dragonball Evolution.
    • Marsters noted that he was a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise and felt bad for being part of the unanimously loathed live-action, thus in Super he was credited as "David Grey" due to not wanting to bring the negativity from the film, as well as hoping to redeem himself, yet not initially receiving credit for a much greater story and character arc as penance.
  • Despite his hatred of mortals, it is possible that Zamasu did have kindness towards animals, as in an extra in the manga, when Gowasu recruits him to be his apprentice when Zamasu was the North Kai of Universe 10, Zamasu had a winged pig as a pet. However, this was also subverted over time as it is implied that Zamasu (also as Goku Black) has killed animals while executing his plan, and this is confirmed when he becomes Infinite Zamasu, by killing the Kame House turtle and Trunks and Mai's black cat.
