Zane is the secondary antagonist, of the novel The Well of Ascension, which is the second novel in the Mistborn original trilogy, by Brandon Sanderson. He is the illegitimate son of Straff Venture, and half-brother of protagonist Elend Venture.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Zane was born to Lord Straff Venture and a mistress, for the sole purpose of attempting to breed an allmancer. Zane was born a mistborn, and was the only child of Straff to have that power. Straff used psychological manipulation to keep control of Zane. Zane believed himself insane, as he heard voices. Unbeknownst to him, Zane had a Hemalurgic Spike, which was used by Ruin to manipulate him.
The Well of Ascension[]
Zane was spying on Vin, and ended up helping her defeat an enemy Mistborn who worked for Lord Cett. He sent a Kadra, Tensoon, to murder and replace Vin's Kandra, OreSeur. Zane was sleeping with one of his father's mistresses, Amaranta, and the two of them were poisoning Straff with an addictive substance.
Straff tried to have Zane assassinated. However, Zane escaped and went to Luthadel. In Luthadel, he made contact with Vin, and wanted him to leave Elend and join him. He provided her with atium, which, unbeknownst to her, was fake. Cett used some of Straff's allomancers to try and kill Vin, in an attempt to convince her to join him. He then led her to assassinate hundreds of Cett's soldiers.
He once again asked Vin to join him. When she refused, he attempted to kill her. He had TenSoon attack her, but Vin was able to control him. VIn tried to use the atium, but realized it was fake. Zane used atium to try and kill VIn. However, Vin realized that she could counter this by looking for how he was reacting while using Atium. She managed to kill Zane. As Zane was dying, Ruin revealed he had been manipulating him the whole time.
