“ | The people of our tribe… a tribe that mastered the arts of magic…were locked away in this world like insects in a cage. In the shadows we regressed, so much so that we soon knew neither anger nor hatred…nor even the faintest bloom of desire. And all of it was the fault of a useless, do-nothing royal family that had resigned itself to this miserable half-existence! I had served and endured in that depraved household for far too long, my impudent princess. And why, you ask? Because I believed that I would be the next to rule our people! THAT is why! But would they acknowledge me as their king? No! And as such, I was denied the magic powers befitting our ruler. It was then, in the thrall of hatred and despair, that I turned my eyes to the heavens…and found a god. My god had only one wish… To merge shadow and light… and make darkness! | „ |
~ Zant's infamous breakdown |
Zant, also known as the Usurper King, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Ganondorf) of the 2006 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
He is a demented sorcerer from the Twilight Realm who became Ganondorf's right-hand man in exchange for vast power, which he used to usurp the throne from its rightful ruler, Midna, becoming her archenemy. After cursing her, Zant transformed the Twili into Shadow Beasts and invaded Hyrule, forcing Princess Zelda to submit to his rule in order to engulf the land in Twilight.
He was voiced by Junji Kitajima in Twilight Princess and Masashi Tamaki in Hyrule Warriors.
Appearance
Zant is a very tall and slender humanoid with abnormally long limbs most obviously noticeable in his arms which go down to his knees. He is always seen wearing a regal, long, black, oversized robe decorated in aquamarine Twilight symbols which appear to glow in the dark, the robe also has eight red and aqua tassels running down at the end of each sleeve.
He also wears a silvery metallic shoulder guard with a red gem in the middle, a dark-red tabard decorated with intricate golden motifs resembling Gerudo symbols, frilled black trousers, and golden shoes in the shape of crocodiles. He dons a metal helmet resembling a chameleon's face which is capable of retracting itself into his shoulder guard. The tongue of the helmet acts as the mouthpiece, which is also able to retract itself into the helmet at Zant's will.
Zant keeps his hands hidden under his sleeves, only showing them when he reanimates the monstrous fossil Stallord. They appear to be dark grey and discolored with long fingers and his veins showing prominently, providing a stark contrast compared to the regular black and white colors of Twili. He also wields two black and aquamarine twin scimitars, with maroon accents resembling Twilight symbols as his primary melee weapons, making them appear from his sleeves. Whether he hides them inside or conjure them in his hands is never explained.
When his helmet is removed, Zant reveals his much less threatening face which appears to be very gaunt and somehow snake-like, with pale blueish skin and purple lips and glowing orange eyes with no pupils. He also appears to wear charcoal eyeshadow with black eyeliner and has the Twilight Emblem engraved on his forehead running down to the tip of his nose. He has a very small Glasgow grin of sorts along his lips which forms an X shape across his mouth, making it difficult to tell whether he's happy or upset at only a glance. He also has red hair, although much of it is obscured by the dark yellow balaclava he wears around his head and neck.
Personality
“ | Traitors, ha! You want to know why nobaody would call you king? It was your eyes, Zant. All saw it, a lust for power burning in your pupils... Did you think we'd forget our ancestors lost their king to such greed? | „ |
~ Midna pointing out Zant's blatant insanity. |
Zant was born from darkness and is awfully cruel, ruthless, hateful, selfish, entitled, and power-hungry. He is a sworn enemy to people of twili and has brainwashed them; killed, cursed or corrupted thousands without a care in the world, and threatened to slaughter everyone in Hyrule totally matter-of-factly, before turning them all into ghosts. This explains why he was denied the Throne and why he accepted Ganondorf's bargain.
In the game, Zant gives the impression of being calm, collected and somewhat polite, albeit imposing and scornful, with a deep voice and a scary scream as he appears. Yet, his creepy whispers in Midna's ear when she is at his mercy and his exalted mentions of his "God" hint a more disturbed and disturbing side.
Before the battle against him, Zant reveals himself as utterly immature, unhinged, and psychotic. To his core, he is a fanatic of the worst kind, blindly worshipping Ganondorf for granting his wish, unable to grasp that the King of Evil regards him as little more than a useful puppet. Worst, he is clinically demented, as shown by his very quirky, frantic, and erratic movements like suddenly dashing and spinning without warning while yelling at a much higher pitch.
He is a mood-swinger flying from seething yet controlled hatred, to obsessive exaltation, to frenzied rages. He has a very short temper and can throw violent albeit comical tantrums, ridiculously stomping his foot or jumping up and down while screeching at the top of his lungs, like an unruly brat throwing a hissy fit when denied, which he is in more ways than one. A flashback reveals that he was this from the start, slamming his head against the floor for not getting the throne, with his air of aloof poise being but a facade, like the monarch he could only pretend to be.
Zant harbours a virulent hatred for the Light Spirits who banished his Interlopers ancestors to the Twilight Realm eons ago for coveting the divine Triforce to rule the world, and for light-worlders, just for living in the land he believes should have belonged to his ancestors they do not even know about. He believes that his people (but mostly him alone) deserve the world, with normal people only fit to be subjugated or eradicated.
Ironically, he only could usurp the throne and almost take over Hyrule because of a light-worlder. He confirms such blatant hypocrisy when calling Midna – the legitimate ruler – a traitor. With his people pacified over the centuries, he is the only one clinging to the ambition that lost his ancestors, despising his people's lack of anger and desire, lamenting that they lost their ways. In addition, he holds the royalty in utmost contempt and loathing, for enabling such "weakness".
Zant is a disgustingly delusional and self-righteous egomaniac and megalomaniac, showing no care for anyone but himself. He could only fathom his rejection for the throne as a dire affront, never registering his peer's warnings that his ambition would spell their doom, just like it doomed their ancestors. In his twisted point of view, the throne belongs to him and him alone, they slighted him for sidelining him, and his usurpation is just taking back what he is owed. He has the gall to claim he did all this for the good of their people, believing that the Twili have been oppressed and banished from what he considers their rightful dominion, and aspiring to take it back.
In truth, he did it all to satiate his deranged revenge fantasies and lust for power. He shows a creepy fixation on Midna, wanting her by his side (if not for himself) but leaving her to suffer or die when rejected. Worst of all, he forcefully transformed his peaceful people into violent, mindless, blindly obedient Shadow Beasts, cementing his lack of concern for their well-being. All in all, he is little more than a pathetic man-child feeling entitled to a prize he never earned for the sake of it, without being able (or willing) to do anything constructive with it, leaving the thinking to Ganondorf. This shows in battle, in which he apes previous bosses instead of devising a fighting style of his own.
Another trait of Zant is his extreme arrogance: cursing Midna then Link instead of killing them, before pitting them against a monster but leaving without watching the battle. He is persuaded that this will be enough, and that his curses cannot be lifted should they persist, believing himself secure after breaking the Mirror of Twilight. This also shows his strong sadism, as their deaths would not satisfy him, preferring to leave them powerless, only able to watch what they hold dear crumble before their eyes. Still, while he does show caution, he clearly underestimates their determination and just cannot see them becoming threats despite mounting evidence of the contrary.
However, he is much more intelligent, cautious and strategic than he appears, planning his invasion of Hyrule well enough to leave them totally blindsided. He knew when and where to strike, as evidenced when he ambushed Zelda and Link when they least expected, and carefully took steps to prevent them from reaching him. This is further shown in Hyrule Warriors, in which he expertly lures his enemies into traps, knows how to find their weakness or disable their assets, and can skilfully improvise, enough to be commended by the hard-to-please Ganondorf.
Powers and Abilities
Zant demonstrates incredible feats of magic throughout the game, being described as possessing powers beyond Link's comprehension. However, the fact that he owes his tremendous might to Ganondorf casts doubt over what was his own and what was granted. The official guide of Hyrule Warriors does clarify that he was the best wizard in his family. This confirms that he is a genuine expert of Twilight Magic, whose abilities were greatly magnified.
Contrary to most Twilis who need to fuse with shadows to survive even by night-time in the Light Word, and can only reach it and go back through the dimensional gateway of the Mirror of Twilight, Zant can go there and survive without trouble. He demonstrates astonishing speed and agility, casually dashing or spinning at full speed and hoping from totem to totem, and even more impressive contortionist skills, bending his body backwards or rotating as if lacking a skeleton. He rarely shows it, but he also displays huge physical strength, and the ability to breathe underwater. However, he clearly has no martial training, exhausting himself rather quickly. While he does wield two scimitars when backed into a corner, he relies on hacking, flailing and spinning wildly rather than skill of any sort.
Zant proves formidable when it comes to magic however, as he can not only fly and teleport, but warp himself and anyone else where he wants, if not altering the room to make it identical to arenas where bosses were fought. He can also create Twilight Portals through which he sends his Shadows Beasts to Hyrule, which Midna in turn uses to teleport. In Hyrule Warriors, he can warp things next to him to attack. He masters high-level telekinesis, throwing Midna around like a ragdoll and holding her in place while taking the Fused Shadows without lifting a finger, he can create energy barriers, and he seems able to see and spell-cast where he is not physically present.
Zant can conjure normal objects, up to four building-sized replicas of his own helmet, or to create Twilight ones, such as his scimitars or a huge sword, and infuse them with his magic, casting a necromancy spell through the sword to revive the fossil of a gigantic monster. Moreover, he can create animated entities and grant them powers, such as the floating replicas of his helmet teleporting and shooting dark energy balls, the gigantic, flying stone hands warping through walls, and the ghostly doubles of himself summoning hordes of Twilight-monsters in his palace.
He can cast tremendous curses, which not even his death can lift for they channels Ganondorf’s energy, turning Midna into an imp-creature and his subjects into monsters. He can conjure and control shadows, sending them in storm-like clouds, creating crystals of solid shadow, or spreading dark fogs infused with his Twilight energy. He spreads Twilight by stealing all Light in a distinct area, corrupting things and people exposed to it. He usually does it through Light-devouring insects, but his confrontation with Midna, Link and the Light Spirit Lanaryu shows that he can plunge his entire surroundings in Twilight in seconds.
In his early face-offs with Zelda, then Midna and Link, Zant sent a beachcomber wave of shadowy clouds, a powerful wave of Twilight energy blasting all foes around him, be it a Light Spirit, and a dark-red energy sphere he detonates at close range to blast foes away. Oddly enough, he never used any of it when fighting them, instead spamming barrages of energy balls. He also size-shifted to become giant (though harming him did the reverse). Still, once again, all he ever does is to mimic weaker beings, highlighting his utter inability to use his power in a creative manner.
Biography
This biography of Zant is organized into the official Zelda timelines, established by the official guide Hyrule Historia.
The game is set in the Child Timeline, resulting from Link being sent back to the past to relive the childhood he lost to Ganondorf, at the end of Ocarina of Time. He promptly warned Princess Zelda of Ganondorf's treachery, leading to his arrest. Alas, the Sages were unable to execute him, leaving them with no choice but to seal into the Twilight Realm through the Mirror of Twilight, where he roamed for about a century.
The Twilight Realm being another dimension of everlasting dusk and shadows, whose source of light are two holy orbs called the Sols. Millennia before the story, the Interlopers, a tribe of powerful evil mages tried to seize the wish-granting Triforce to rule the world. The Light Spirits exiled them there, and condensed their magic into three relics called the Fused Shadows. Appeased by their new home-world's tranquil beauty, over the passing centuries they became the peaceful Twili people.
Background
“ | I shall house my power in you… If there is anything you desire, then I shall desire it, too. | „ |
~ Ganondorf offering a deal to Zant. |
Zant’s past is never fully explained in game. He states to have worked under the royal family and was one of the presumptive heirs to the throne, hinting that he was part of the Royal Court. Zant worked for the royal family for years in the hope that he will be elected the monarch of the Twili. However, the Twili people instead elect Midna as their new monarch. It is stated that Zant was intentionally passed over as monarch due to his inherent greed and lust for power, something which is what led to the ancestors of the Twili being banished in the first place.
Sensing his hatred, Ganondorf appeared as a gigantic spirit face, that the mad Twili mistook for a god. He offered to boost Zant's power with his own, in exchange for his service, to cover both worlds in Darkness.
Zant eagerly accepted, using his newfound power to overthrow Midna before she could claim the magic bestowed to the Monarch of Twilight, transforming her into a vastly depowered imp. He sealed away the Sols holy orbs serving as the Twili's source of Light, and transformed all of his people into hideous but powerful Shadow Beasts (probably because they refused to serve him), and turned his sight to the Light Realm.
“ | It is time for you to choose: surrender or die. Oh yes, a question for all the land and people of Hyrule… Life? Or death?! | „ |
~ Zant demanding control of Hyrule, as well as the first sign of his madness. |
Zant proceeds to lay siege to Hyrule Castle, invading it and causing a large conflagration in the castle. As he enters the throne room, several guards stationed to protect Princess Zelda are promptly subdued by Shadow Beasts. Zelda raises her rapier sword as a final form of defiance, to which Zant threatens to kill all of her subjects in Hyrule if she does not comply with his order to abdicate the Hylian throne to him. Zelda, not wishing harm to her subjects and to defy Zant against seemingly impossible odds, drops her rapier sword as a sign of surrenders and abdicates the throne to Zant. Soon after, Twilight surges from the burning castle, turning the residents of Hyrule Castle Town and the vast majority of Hyrule’s population into light spirits, unaware of their predicament. Zant later freezes Zora’s Domain when they refuse to bow down to him, killing their queen, Rutela in the process.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
“ | My Midna… Did you forget? That beast is one of the light dwellers that oppressed our people. No matter how much you may desire otherwise, you will never be more than a shadow in their world. You cannot consort with their kind! But if we can their world ours, Midna… light and darkness will meet at last. Our tribe will take back their realm… and sweet darkness will blot out this harsh light! And that, Midna, is why… I need you. Not just for me, but for all of our people… Lend me your power. | „ |
~ Zant attempting to bring Midna to his side. |
The story starts when Link, a teenage farmer in the remote Ordon Village, is instructed to bring a sword as an offering to Princess Zelda, likely for her coronation. It turns out that Ordona is the last province whose Light Zant has yet to steal, so he sends his lackey King Bulblin, who spreads Twilight and abducts Link's friends, including the mayor's daughter Ilia. Due to the Triforce of Courage he inherited, Link is turned into a wolf instead of a spirit, but gets captured and thrown to the Hyrule Castle cells. Luckily, Midna notices it. She magically breaks his shackle, offering to help him save his people in exchange for his assistance in finding the three Fused Shadows.
They meet Princess Zelda, who tells them of Zant's invasion, and teleport back to Ordon Village, Link encounters the Light Spirits, powerless without their Light, who explain how to bring it back and restore each province. He turns back into a human, obtains the Hero's tunic, and destroys Diababa, an ordinary Deku Baba corrupted into a giant monster by one of the Fused Shadows, which Midna takes for herself. Link then travels to Eldin, restoring it, and saves his friend Colin from King Bulblin. The Shadow Beasts later warp away a large chunk of the Eldin Bridge. Link learns Zant's name from Midna after saving the leader of the Gorons, corrupted into Fyrus by a Fused Shadow.
Link and Midna thaw out the Zora Domain and save Prince Ralis, before retrieving the final Fused Shadow in Lake Hylia, learning about the Dark Interlopers from the Light Spirit Lanaryu. Alas, Zant ambushes them, taking down Link, Midna and Lanaryu in one move, stealing the Fused Shadows and trapping Link in wolf form with a Shadow Crystal. Zant tells Midna that Light is not for them, and hints about his "god". She refuses to yield, so he grievously wounds her by exposing her to Lanaryu's Light. Link carries Midna on his back to Zelda, who saves her life by transferring her soul, and directs Link to the holy Master Sword, which can turn it back to normal. Zant seals the castle under a magic barrier, but from then on, Midna can use the Crystal to transform Link at will.
Having become friends instead of partners through adversity, Midna and Link head to the royal gaols of Arbiter's Grounds deep in the Gerudo Desert. Zant appears before them, reviving the fossil of the ancient demon Stallord to kill them, before shattering the Mirror of Twilight they came for, and dispersing its fragments across the land. Fortunately, he cannot destroy it due to having usurped the throne, and they set out to repair it and settle their score with Zant and his liege Ganondorf.
They save the Yeti's wife from the corrupting influence of a mirror shard in the derelict manor of Snowpeak Mountain. Then they destroy monsters haunting the Temple of Time, before reaching the legendary City in the Sky and destroying Argorok, the dragon plaguing the Oocca sky-people.
They repair the Mirror and enter the Twilight Realm at last, storming the Palace of Twilight. There they must destroy Zant's ghostly doubles to take the Sols, held by giant stone hands, animating themselves to chase thieves and take it back.
Link and Midna reach the Throne Room where the King of Shadows awaits. As Midna taunts him, he shatters his collected facade and flies to a frenzied tantrum, ranting madly about his ambition and deal with Ganondorf. He then engages the decisive battle, during which his sanity crumbles further.
Zant is finally down, but this does not lift Midna's curse. He gloats that Ganondorf is back, about to cast the universe in Darkness, and will revive him. Livid, Midna retakes the Fused Shadows and kills him with them, scared of their might.
Link and Midna return to Hyrule Castle, under Ganondorf's control. Midna saves Zelda, who assists Link against the King of Evil. As Ganondorf is dying, deprived at last of the Triforce of Power, a vision of Zant snapping his neck is seen which finally causes him to die. Whether this shows his hold over the Twilis broken or a post-mortem revolt is left unsaid. Now back to normal, Midna bids a tearful farewell to her friends, before shattering the Mirror of Twilight after her to prevent further conflict.
Boss Battle
Zant is the most diverse boss in the game, with the battle against him taking six full stages in which he replicates the arena of a previous boss or mini-boss battle, adapting his fighting style following it.
Zant first recreates the Forest Temple boss arena and flies over the poison pond, firing fast-paced barrages of dark energy balls, rather easy to dodge or block with the shield. Link must throw the Gale Boomerang to knock him down before he teleports away, to make him fall in the poison pond and jump to the bank, open to sword slashes. After two or three times, he changes the arena.
Zant recreates the Goron Mines mini-boss arena. He jumps repeatedly onto the edge of the magnetic platform, laughing maniacally, to swing it over, so Link must anchor himself with the Iron Boots to avoid falling into the lava. (Although, with good handling, the boots may not be needed at all). Link must rush at him when he fires his barrage while dodging, and quickly slash at him while he catches his breath exhausted. Link must repeat the process twice or thrice. Next, Zant recreates the Lakebed Temple boss arena. Link must don the Zora Armor to breathe underwater, and alternate between swimming to dodge Zant's barrages and sinking with the Iron Boots to retaliate. A giant copy of his helmet emerges, its mouth opens up for him to attack from within. Link must draw him close with the Clawshot before the helmet closes up, and slash at him until he teleports away. The giant helmet vanishes, replaced by four rising around Link. Link must find which one opens for Zant to attack.
Next, Zant recreates the Forest Temple mini-boss arena. He jumps from totem pole to totem pole about four times before teleporting, stopping to fire his usual barrage of energy balls. Link must dash towards him while dodging and roll into the totem he is standing on twice to knock him down (rather humorously, getting his helmet stuck in the ground), and slash at him. Link must repeat the process twice or thrice.
Next, Zant recreates the Snowpeak Ruins boss arena and grow to a gargantuan size. He hovers above the arena, forcing Link to look down and see the reflection off the icy floor, to avoid him when he drops down to crush him. He then stomps his foot on Link, who must dodge and strike one foot with the Ball and Chain to make him shrink down to tiny size (while comically clutching his foot), open for attacks. Link must beware, for moving on slippery ice can be tricky. Link must repeat the process twice or thrice for Zant to bring him to the last arena.
Out of options, Zant recreates Hyrule Castle's courtyard and reveals twin scimitars from his sleeves. He maniacally hacks at Link, which can either be blocked with the shield, dodged or countered to slash at him, or retaliated with a Back Slice sword technique. Zant often teleports, but tires out fast. He can land a spinning dash, which can only be evaded but leaves him dazed and vulnerable for a few seconds. When wounded enough, he starts teleporting while spinning to strike from all sides. Link must be stay cautious and keep attacking until the Usurper King is done for.
Other Appearances
Hyrule Warriors
Zant is a major villain in this crossover hack and slash game, that places many characters of the series in the setting of the Dynasty Warriors series. He and Ghirahim grudgingly serve the Black Witch Cia, then willingly become Ganondorf's right-hands after the King of Evil returns, while Cia, Volga and Wizzro are killed by the heroes.
Cia reaches the Era of Twilight via the Gate of Souls, cursing Midna instead of him. She demands his fealty, only to be turned down, until she forces him to comply by besting him in battle, letting him pursue his take-over of the Twilight Realm so long as he protects the Gate in his Era, from Midna, Lana and her allies. Zant sends his hordes at the heroes, using the dragon Argorok to wreck their base while keeping out of reach until the powerful Great Fairy kills it. Zant is later defeated and trapped in the Gate of Souls.
After Cia's death, Ganondorf summons Zant and Ghirahim and tells them to serve him or die. Still worshipping Ganondorf as a god, Zant bows down and becomes his tactician. He advises his liege to avoid the Great Fairy, and later as Zelda's bodyguard Impa is distracting them with clones, to lure the real one out by targeting her allies.
Ganondorf steals the complete Triforce, using it to terraform Hyrule into a demonic land and reign supreme over it. Meanwhile, Zant and Ghirahim head back to lead their liege's armies in Gerudo Desert. They engage the heroes once more, using clones as a distraction, only to get killed for good. Then, the heroes' entire forces from every era slay Ganondorf once and for all and restore the land.
Zant is only unlockable in the Adventure Mode of the original Wii U game, but is available from the start in the 3DS and Nintendo Switch re-releases. He is highly fast and erratic, fighting with his scimitars that can be upgraded to two of the sword he revived Stallord with. He is as mad and frantic as ever, albeit way more skilled here, in a contrast with his ineptitude with magic and blades in the original. His fighting style being meant to confuse foes. Still, he can still exhaust himself and get vulnerable if he attacks too long and overflows his Special Meter, as such players must be careful. When his gauge is charged, he removes his helmet to use better attacks.
He swings or spins his swords, firing black and green shockwaves from them, and he can stomp the ground, whirl surrounded by green energy to rise, land a spinning dash, or spin in circle to conjure darkness. He can summon a helmet replica releasing a quick-fire of dark energy balls in all directions before exploding; fire a lasting barrage of dark energy balls, sometimes uplifting himself on a totem pole he then drops on foes; stomp the ground to cause dark shockwaves; fire a dark energy sphere; summon a giant stone hand to repeatedly slap the ground, or warp it through portals; grow to gargantuan size to stomp the ground or levitate to belly flop, causing dark shockwaves. His Special Attack has him fly and summon two ghostly doubles to fire a dark sphere of destruction right below him.
Super Smash Bros. Series
Zant appears as a trophy in both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. He also appears as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which can be equipped to increase weapon attacks for Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, and Toon Link.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Zant appears as a primary attack-type spirit. His spirit battle is a timed brawl against Robin on the Bridge of Eldin who can summon an Abra to teleport the player across the stage and temporally become giant.
Akira Himekawa's Twilight Princess
- Main article: Zant (Twilight Princess manga)
Zant returns as one of the central antagonists of Akira Himekawa's manga adaptation of Twilight Princess. Here, he is presented as a former advisor to Midna’s father, the King of the Twilight Realm, as well as Midna's mentor. After the king died, Zant tried to use his clout among the elders to become the de facto leader. When Midna was declared leader instead, Zant proposed marriage to her to become King. When rejected, Zant accepted Ganondorf's offer to provide him the power he needed to conquer the Twilight Realm and Hyrule. When finally defeated by Link, Zant confesses that he did everything he did to contend with his own self-hatred. While he seems to briefly consider changing his ways, Zant smugly reveals that he has already allowed Ganondorf to return to the world of light, leading Midna to kill him with the Fused Shadows.
Trivia
- Zant is the first boss not to be directly killed in battle by Link, being instead killed shortly after by Midna. Given the virulent enmity between the two, this is more fitting.
- Zant is the first major The Legend of Zelda antagonist to yield a Heart Container, with the second being Ghirahim, and the third being Yuga.
- Zant's Glasgow grin was given to him as a way to add to his sinister qualities, according to Hyrule Historia it is supposed to give off the effect of being unsure as to whether or not he's smiling or crying.
- Zant and Midna appear to be more human-looking than many of the other Twili although this is somewhat less clear with Zant given some of the odd proportions his body has which are obscured by his clothes.
- Zant's breakdown was apparently a rather late addition into the story of Twilight Princess, although it has since been rectified and made into his most defining trait, with later media depicting him such as the manga adaptation of Twilight Princess and Hyrule Warriors both showing Zant's insanity and childish nature blatantly from the start, sometimes even coinciding with his attempts at keeping up a calm and foreboding façade.
