“ | People look at us like we're murderous freaks. I guess they aren't wrong though. This hoe has cracked quite a few skulls in its day. We wander this world for really only one reason... A reason some are well aware of. We've searched for it for many, many years only to be denied once again. If only things were simpler. I must not grow angry though. There is no going back if I do. |

~ Zardy in the secret ending from the giant tree. |
“ | Three days to grow... I need to stay focused. Something like this could never grow here otherwise. This world isn't fit for something like this. The plants here... They grow far too slow... And they're so... static. It's a shame really. There's a beauty in the stillness, but it's such a departure from... home. From how things are supposed to be... You may think you're safe... That what you took is safe... But I assure you, it is not. |

~ Zardy in the secret ending from the tree trunks. |
Zardy is the titular main antagonist of the 2020 indie horror game Zardy's Maze and its 2024 sequel Zardy's Cave.
He is a demonic scarecrow that stalks a corrupted corn field alongside his minions, protecting the large weeds that have started to grow inside it from any intruders.
Appearance[]
Zardy is a scarecrow with a pointed hat, grey-blue clothes, brown boots and a pumpkin for a head. The pumpkin has a smile and eyes carved into it and emits an orange glow from within. He wields a large gardening hoe as a weapon, which he slowly drags on the ground behind him as me moves.
Biography[]
Large, glowing purple weeds have started to grow in a farmer's corn field. Deep in the night the farmer notices these plants, grabs his crank flashlight and trusty axe and sets out into the field to destroy the weeds before they can destroy all of his hard work. Unfortunately, the scarecrows inside the field have come to life and are protecting them with murderous zeal.
Zardy himself is the only enemy to be aware of the farmer's position at all times and is guaranteed to be encountered in every game. Like the other scarecrows, Zardy can kill the farmer in an instant upon making contact with him, though while he always knows where the farmer is he moves very slowly. In addition, Zardy can be banished temporarily by shining the flashlight on him. He will always appear nearby if one of the weeds is destroyed and while he can be avoided like the other scarecrows by moving through the corn, he will automatically kill the farmer if he takes too long to get back onto the path, indicated by the farmer's vision going dark.
Secret Ending Texts[]
Exiting the maze through a secret fourth exit that can only be accessed by moving through specific spots in the corn field allows access to a few secret ending screens. In these endings, Zardy gives cryptic monologues about his and his minions' motivations.
