Zechs Merquise is a major character in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. He is a Colonel in the OZ special forces and a close associate of Treize Khushrenada. Secretly, he is actually Prince Miliardo Peacecraft of the Sanc Kingdom, a nation conquered by the Romefeller Foundation. After leaving OZ, Zechs joins the White Fang and becomes their Commander-In-Chief to lead them in creating a world without conflict. He later appears as one of the main protagonists in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.
He is voiced by Takehito Koyasu in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Brian Drummond in the English version of the anime.

Background[]
Milliardo Peacecraft was among the heirs to the Sanc Kingdom throne, until the attack by the United Earth Sphere Alliance. Ever since that incident, he donned his signature mask and alias Zechs Merquise to join the Alliance and eventually OZ in order to exact revenge from within.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing[]
He would in his shuttle first encounter Gundam pilot Heero Yuy entering Earth to commence his attack. He and his underlings would try to pursue and shoot down Heero's machine. Zechs would then go into a Leo and manages to shoot at Heero's spacecraft, which then transforms into the Wing Gundam. After Heero takes out two pursuing Aries, Zechs would take his turn and grapples onto the Wing Gundam; he then exits the cockpit, parachutes himself, and leaves the weight of the Leo to drag the Wing Gundam down into the ocean. He would then get picked up by his shuttle and later report to Treize, who sends him to retrieve the fallen Gundam.
Zechs and his team would search for the Wing Gundam; however, once they found it, the salvaging team gets assaulted by Duo Maxwell's Deathscythe Gundam.
After that incident, he would eventually receive the Tallgeese at the Mediterranean base at the same time Trowa Barton assaults the Corisca Base with his Heavyarms Gundam.
While hearing the report on Corsica Base, Lucrezia Noin would call Zechs' shuttle, and they converse over her decision to join OZ because of her love for outer space in spite of her actually hating wars. Later, he would relax at a night club with Noin, and they talk about the lively atmosphere of the place in relation to the youth of the soldiers and whether losing those troops is inevitable or not. Meanwhile, Otto calls Zechs about the status of fixing up the Tallgeese. After Wufei's attack on the OZ dormitories in the Lake Victoria Base and the destruction of the shuttle carrying the Taurus mobile suits, Zechs would try to comfort a distraught Noin and invite her to join with him in their next battles.
OZ would later begin its revolution against the Alliance, which started to take on a more peaceful route. On the day of Field Marshal Noventa's meeting for making peace with the colonies, Zechs and Noin join in on the usurpation of the Alliance's Nairobi Base. After the attack, Zechs delivers his speech to call for more allies and less resistance.

Zechs appears as a member of the Preventers, a peacekeeping organization led by Lady Une formed to prevent conflicts and wars from breaking out.
Personality[]
As an antagonist and character in general Zechs is quite difficult to describe. Full of pride and self-loathing, living the life of a soldier has brought great internal conflict to Zechs. Despite his reputation as a great mobile pilot, Zechs feels that he has betrayed himself and his father's ideals. As a result of his many battles, he believes that he is not worthy to his family name, as his life as a soldier contradicts his father's pacifistic ideals. This is shown when Treize referred to him as "Milliardo Peacecraft" his real name to which Zechs responded to with great shame. He is often seen struggling between chivalry and the professionalism of a modern soldier who carries out destruction and killing in a rational and efficient manner. This internal conflict was what drove his motives as he struggled to find the balance between his former identity as his father's son, and the uncompromised warrior that he felt he needed to become. This led him into getting kicked out of OZ and eventually being in charge of the White Fang. Declaring war on the Earth using the battleship Libra, his main objective over targeting the Earth was to stop humanity from fighting each other and to have his sister Relena lead the people in a new age of peace. However, it was also a test he put on himself to become a relentless warrior. It is not until he fights Heero at the end of the Eve Wars that he accepts that he was once again defeated by Heero, and convinced that Heero and the others were capable of carrying out their ideal of peace. Later, he pledged to continue acting as a warrior, however, this time for keeping peace in the world, thus finally reconciling his two identities into one.

- Zechs Merquise's silver mask, red uniform and secret identity as an exiled prince and brother of the female lead make him an obvious homage to Char Aznable from the original Mobile Suit Gundam.
