Zein: I commend your hard work. But, let me carry out on passing judgment.
Horobi: Who are you?
Zein: I am Zein. I am this dimension's savior.
~ Zein introducing itself to its supporters after possessing Yuto Sakurai.

Zein is the main antagonist of Kamen Rider Outsiders. It was initially introduced as a mysterious artificial intelligence that seeks to study human benevolence and eradicate malice within humanity. In truth, Zein seeks to subjugate humanity in order to establish a utopia of absolute peace and order. In response, a resurgent Foundation X began a plan to gather villains from previous Kamen Rider series to form a resistance force against Zein known as the titular Kamen Rider Outsiders. He also appears as a minor antagonist in Kamen Rider Gotchard.

Zein is voiced by Toru Okawa, who voices Mummy Legendorga in Kamen Rider Kiva: King of the Castle in the Demon World, Deboth in Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger, Rustal Elion in Mobile Suit Gundam: IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS, and Terry Silver in the Japanese dub of The Karate Kid: Part III and Cobra Kai.

History[]

Zein is an artificial intelligence that assessed the "good intentions" of humanity and was suddenly born into the network. As Zein had a zero tolerance for malice, Gai Amatsu worried that Zein would come to conclude that humanity's extinction was required to eliminate malice and formed a reluctant alliance with the Ark to stop it. He would also attempt to persuade Kuroto Dan to help them as well. Unknown to Gai, Ark manipulated Gai for Kuroto to become Musou Gamer.

In light of Zein's presence, Foundation X initiated Project Outsiders, with the help from Ark's predictions to oppose Zein's autocracy. However, Zein swayed various heroic Riders and their associates to crackdown Foundation X's illegal activities. Later, Zein plans to reactivate Kamen Rider Chronicle to wipe out humanity, it successfully tricks Tsukuru Koboshi, the CEO of Genm Corp, into relaunching the game while mimicking Nico Saiba's voice.

Kamen Rider Zero-Three would later reveal the truth about Zein: In the future, Zein had already rendered the human race extinct and has given the heroic Riders false hope into believing that serving him would save humanity from certain doom in the present day.

Personality[]

At first glance, Zein may seem like a pure and incorruptible AI that represents all that is good in the Kamen Rider universe that contrasts the Ark, a being that embodies pure malice. However, this is a ruse; Zein's true personality is that of an authoritarian ruler with a god complex, viewing itself as morally superior to humans. It seeks nothing more but to build a utopia without conflict. Zein is a self-imposed übermensch, believing only in its absolutist-based morality and views human laws and morality as obsolete. However, its narrative of benevolence and goodwill is overshadowed by its true nature as a cruel, oppressive, hypocritical, depraved, amoral, apathetic, and above all, a sadistic and genocidal AI that is incredibly vile than the Ark and other recruits of Project Outsiders such as Takeshi Asakura and Tenjuro Banno.

Zein proved itself to be no less malevolent than the Ark and is shown to be just as tyrannical as Ohma Zi-O. Ironically, Zein exists to oppose the Ark along with the malice associated with it. Zein's actions alone throughout Kamen Rider Outsiders crossed too many lines that even Foundation X are alarmed by its intention of using Kamen Rider Chronicle to wipe out humanity and deemed Zein to be too dangerous to be left unopposed. If the Ark wanted to destroy humanity for their capacity for malice, Zein can also do the same, but much worse, with itself defining its own twisted sense of justice of which is a slippery slope in and of itself to go on. Zein believes that its actions of killing Ride Players who commit minor crimes to be morally correct no matter how severe they were, despite having proved otherwise after Tsumuri and Kuroto Dan witnessing the act and is convinced that sacrificing innocent people through Kamen Rider Chronicle is the sake of justice. It has no problem casting out its accomplices when they disagree with its goals.

In the end, Zein's worldview of black and white in absolutes would ultimately become its downfall. Zein ended up being the very same evil it swore to destroy.

Victims[]

  • Tenjuro Banno - Beaten to near death using Ex-Aid Muteki Gamer's finisher, followed by skewered by multiple Seikens via Haouken Xross Saber's Haou Xross Seiretsuzan. However, Banno survived by storing his data inside Brain's tablet.
  • Ark (indirect) - Zein had weakened the Ark during their battle, leaving it under the mercy of Kamen Rider Garren King Form and obliterated via Four of a Kind, leaving the Ark temporarily off the grid until episode 5.
  • Mimei - killed by using Super-1's Super Rider Moon Surface Kick.
  • Several Ride-Players - Zein engaged in a summary execution spree against many Ride-Players who are caught misusing Kamen Rider Chronicle for selfish ends. According to Tsumuri, Zein managed to accrue a body count of players on a global scale, about the equal of 50% of the human population.
  • Kuroto Dan - Destroyed his Humagear body in a fit of rage, after being tricked into using Zero-Two's powers. Kuroto was later resurrected as a human thanks to Kamen Rider Zero-Three.
  • 99% of the human population - According to Kamen Rider Zero-Three's prediction, as long as Zein exists, 99% of humanity will be extinct if left unopposed. Therefore, Zein is responsible for the tragic circumstances of Yuto Sakurai's apocalyptic future.

Quotes[]

I'll show you who the real savior is! You will be marked for judgment for defying me!
~ Zein's villainous breakdown, and a proof of its growing God complex

Trivia[]

  • Zein's namesake Rider form bears a striking resemblance to N-Daguva-Zeba from Kamen Rider Kuuga. It also helps that George Karizaki/Kamen Rider Juuga, which is based on Kuuga Ultimate Form. George himself developed the Zein Driver, and being a Kamen Rider fanboy, the possibility of Zein's Rider form being based on Daguva is no coincidence.
  • Given that the Zein Cards are knockoffs of Decade's Rider Cards, Zein acts as an evil counterpart for Tsukasa Kadoya/Kamen Rider Decade, Zein represents what Tsukasa would be like if he never had his memories erased and continued conquering other A.R. Worlds unimpeded.
  • Zein's usage of its Zein Cards are mostly the final forms of Heisei and Reiwa Riders. The following Riders' final forms can potentially invoke an apocalyptic scenario, a possibility Zein's modus operandi leaves open:
    • Kuuga Ultimate has the potential to destroy the entire planet with a single finishing move.
    • Using Agito Shining also allows Zein to obtain the Seed of Agito. With it, Zein can give away the seeds to the entire human race the same way Prometh did, but to brainwash a select few to create Agito-powered soldiers that are obedient to it. Ironically, Zein also represents the Overlord's fears of humanity of growing too powerful if left unchecked.
    • Using Decade's powers allows Zein to control Aurora Curtains. This allows Zein isolate an Outsider and would-be opposition into another parallel dimension with little to no hope of escaping back to the main Rider dimension while Zein can rule the world unimpeded.
    • Using W CycloneJokerXtreme allows Zein to hack into the Gaia Library, and by processing all of the library's content, this gives Zein omniscient levels of knowledge that it would have the means to kill criminals, and other active Kamen Rider villains with their names and faces in mind.
    • If using the Gaim Kiwami Arms card, in addition to accessing the weapons of all Armored Riders, Zein can invoke the powers of the Man of the Beginning to envelop the Earth with Helheim plants, rendering the planet completely uninhabitable.
    • Using Grand Zi-O allows Zein to create an army of Kamen Riders at its beck and call to subjugate humanity, not unlike Ohma Zi-O and those that have already conspired to steal his power.
    • Using GeatsIX gives Zein the powers of the God of Genesis. If Ace used his godly powers to create a world where people can find happiness but not at the expense of another's. Zein seeks to use that power to create a totalitarian utopia where people live in fear of forced compliance and under the threat of being killed if accused of a minor crime so long Zein has the entire world under strict surveillance.
  • Zein (alongside Ecole) is one of the, if not the, darkest Kamen Rider villains in Yuya Takahashi's works because of its twisted sense of justice and its goal to eradicate everything that is evil in the Kamen Rider universe, to the point of targeting Ride-Players who commit minor crimes and is responsible for the extinction of humanity in Yuto Sakurai's future.
    • Even though Zein is meant to exist solely to oppose the Ark and the malice associated with it, Zein commits far worse atrocities than any other Kamen Rider villain (including the Ark itself). Even Ziin and Beroba view Zein's oppressive actions as abhorrent and as causing suffering. With the Ark eventually redeeming itself by fusing with Satellite Zea into Kamen Rider Zero-Three, Zein ultimately perishes as the same evil it swore to destroy.
  • Zein is also considered the opposite to the Great Leader of Shocker and his incarnations. The Great Leader embodies everything evil in the Kamen Rider series and proclaims he will return and rebuild his empire so long there's evil in humanity. Zein represents justice, or at least its own warped views of justice, seeking to create a utopia where good has conquered evil and wants to it to be permanent, but at the cost of removing the balance between good and evil in the series lore.
