Zero: I haven't taken it off in seven years. It reminds me that no matter what I'm doing, I did something good once. (tosses the medal) Little Girl: What?! Why'd you do that? Zero: ...I have other reminders now. |

Zero is the titular main protagonist of the 2019 indie action-platformer video game Katana Zero.
Originally an ordinary human being, he was taken and trained by New Mecca government into being a super soldier under NULL project, being turned into a Gamma NULL, an effective killing machine with the godlike powers granted by the Chronos drugs, serving in the Cromag War. Seven years after the war, Zero, now suffering from PTSD, amnesia and various hallucinations, works as an assassin for a secret group to assassinate key figures in New Mecca in exchange for Chronos drugs, given by a psychiatrist. As his story progresses, Zero discovers who he really is, and aims to enlighten the story behind the dreams he has, and all of the actions revolve around him.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
According to the assassination dossier, Zero is a 22-year-old man who is very young-looking, and is defined as a "baby face" by another veteran despite his war experience, as an effect of Chronos drugs that act as a puberty blocker. He has apricot skin and long, black hair that is usually tied into a samurai-like ponytail, and brown eyes.
His main outfit consist of a black one-sleeved bathrobe/kimono-like outfit which is thought to be a cosplay by the receptionist, and also can be used as an evasion from police by Zero himself. As a NULL soldier, he wears a NULL uniform and covers his face with sunglasses and a bandana.
Personality[]
Like many other NULLs, Zero is a high-functioning psychopath who experiences intense hallucinations and nightmares as a result of his severe reliance on Chronos. Zero can be either a serious, impatient character who constantly interrupts people and isn't interested in discussion, or gentler, more patient, and more cooperative, depending on the conversational options the player chooses. Notwithstanding his appearance, Zero is a cold-blooded assassin in the workplace who can dispatch hundreds of enemies with little to no regret.
When he's not working, his more human characteristics come through much more. Zero is revealed to be a devotee of vintage samurai films, as evidenced by his attire, and he must have herbal tea before bed. Additionally, Zero has empathy for common people, especially the Little Girl. The two become closer over the narrative and ultimately form a sort of father-daughter bond, despite the fact that she finds their early chats dull and he is initially direct and to the point with her. She is one of the few people Zero can open up to because Zero takes care of her while her absentee father does not.
If the player decides to treat the Receptionist kindly, he is also capable of displaying some humanity. He can even display a little humor when he wins her over in an optional card game, as shown by specific dialogue options. He will even grin foolishly.
Zero has demonstrated that he has some concern for life, even if he enjoys killing people. After seeing the snuff movie of V killing Zero's bothersome neighbors, Zero displays his contempt for V, calling the Russian a "f--king subhuman." It's also revealed that he has a great deal of remorse over what he did during the war, and every night he dreams about it.
Throughout the game, Zero's originally unstable mental condition worsens even further, making his psychopathy increasingly obvious. After learning the reality about the Psychiatrist's predicament, he finally kills him with a blow to the head. The killing of a homeless veteran for mocking and insulting Zero (though Zero can spare him if he disregarded the psychiatrist beforehand and got Tragedy's orders on the Prison mission) and the hallucinations of Comedy and Tragedy that arise as a result of Zero's Chronos withdrawal are further instances of Zero's mental instability.
Powers and Abilities[]
Zero is a very talented and lethal assassin who has perfected his abilities to an almost inhuman level, with numerous characters, including V, SNOW, and the Psychiatrist, complimenting and even admiring him. Using only a katana and throwable things, he is able to defeat hundreds of foes throughout the game. His hallmark move is a fast swipe with his katana, a blur of metal that can slash through an infinite amount of foes. According to SNOW, Zero is a master in iaijutsu, as he can quickly unsheathe his sword, attack an enemy, then sheathe it again in less than a second.
