Zhang Liao is a minor antagonist in the fourteenth-century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by the late Luo Guanzhong and its multiple adaptations. He is one of the generals of Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu and later Cao Cao.
He is based on the real-life Chinese warrior named of the same.
Biography[]
Service under Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu[]
Zhang Liao was the descendant of Nie Yi of the Eastern Han Dynasty. To avoid the envy and hatred of others however, the family name was changed to Zhang. Zhang Liao started his career as an aid to Ding Yuan. When Zhang Liao returned to the Capital after recruiting soldiers for Commander-in-Chief He Jin, Zhang Liao learned of his assassination and allied himself with Dong Zhuo, the general who occupied the territory. Zhang Liao was appointed as Cavalry Commander and helped Lu Bu after the death of Dong Zhuo. When Li Jue and Guo Si was attacked Lu Bu's forces, Liao fled with his Lord to Xuzhou. Zhang Liao took up the post of "Chancellor of Lu Kingdom" at the age of twenty-eight. On Lu Bu's orders, Liao fought against Liu Bei, Cao Cao and Yuan Shu. His skill in battle caught the eye of many, after Lu Bu's death, Zhang Liao served Cao Cao.
Joining Wei[]
Liu Bei later joined forces with Yuan Shao since his even ignores Cao Cao, Zhang Liao would had times besieging to Xiapi only that so it was into Guan Yu also tries to defended the castle slightly having then that takes allowing while his no failing. Throughout showdown of Guandu, Zhang Liao gets ready to battles Yuan Shao with Cao Cao which helps Xu Huang to fights Wen Chou. Guan Yu, who later serving Cao Cao after his surrendered was joins this battle with Wei.
He taking his horse, the late Lu Bu's Red Hare into locations to Yan Ford, as well had pursues Wen Chou, killed him and decapitated his head from finished. When Cao Cao defeats Yuan Shao making his forces to hailing, Zhang Liao finally breaks over the Yuan family's victories, only he did not joins the banquets with Wei. Guo Jia, one of Cao Cao's advisor who was serving Han at many years, he becoming a weak which causing unhealthy to his body before had death. Dong Zhuo's former henchman, Jia Xu decided protect Guo Jia from Tadun, Zhang Liao could blocking the Yuan's brothers that quickly defeating them. He executed Tadun with this time to behead him.
Guo Jia, who falls down isn't stood up because he is being sick. Cao Cao prepared takes Guo Jia to returned, he see him died into his horse. Upon comes to battle of Chibi, Zhang Liao would sees the navy fleets are sabotaged by the fire attack of Wu. He taking a vessel and head to shores, but pretty much then in opposition to Huang Gai for turns on, which following his lord, Zhang He, and Xu Chu in their missions. However, Zhang Liao leds to setback as he along with Cao Cao and his forces were being attacked by Liu Bei's generals, Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei. Defeating them and flees, Zhang Liao later arriving in Huarong Pass with his lord, he also injured then will recovers.
Battle of Hefei[]
In the battle of Hefei, He managed to repel 100,000 Wu armies with just 800 soldiers. He is feared in various places and the name Zhang Liao mentioned can instantly silence a crying baby.
When Cao Cao is attacking Hanzhong, he was assigned to guard the Wan castle to prevent Wu's attack aimed at attacking Hefei which was a store for Cao Cao who was attacking Liu Bei in the Hanzhong area. Zhang Liao is one of the most loyal generals like Xiahou Dun and Xu Chu. By the battle against Wu he succeeded in killing one of the mainstay Wu general named Taishi Ci.
In the battle against Wu also Zhang Liao finally fall in battle for being hit by a poisoned arrow.
Personality[]
Zhang Liao is a man of honor and will stay virtuous to the very end, no matter what obstacles come his way. Usually calm and just, he is also capable of turning into a fierce beast during battle. He was believes that he can only find his true purpose in life during war and walks the warrior's path. While he serving Lu Bu, Zhang Liao has the utmost faith in his master's more valiant traits including the part of protecting his daughter, Lu Lingqi.
