Admiral Zhao is the main antagonist of the 2010 action adventure fantasy film The Last Airbender, which is based on Book 1: Water of the 2005-2008 animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
He's a general of the Fire Nation who desires to kill the Moon Spirit and become a legend, and is Prince Zuko's rival as well as General Iroh's archenemy.
He was portrayed by Aasif Mandvi.
Personality[]
In this film, Zhao is portrayed as cocky and ambitious, lacking the devious nature of his show counterpart. He's also shown to be a good friend with Ozai and the two form the plan to kill the Ocean and Moon Spirits together, rather than Zhao forming it alone, but even despite it, Zhao will go against Ozai's orders to satiate his pride. Despite his evil nature, Zhao has some hesitation and confliction upon killing the Moon Spirit, but at the end, Zhao rejects any sort of conscious within him out of a god-complex when he goes for the kill, showing himself to be nothing more than a hollow megalomaniac at heart.
Biography[]
Zhao was a supreme commander in the Fire Nation and a military legend. In the film, he was introduced as a henchman of Fire Lord Ozai. Like the original series, Zhao discovered the location of the Moon Spirit using scrolls from Wan Shi Tong's library. He then conspired with Fire Lord Ozai to kill the Ocean and Moon Spirits, with Ozai calling it their "shared destiny". Zhao sent spies to learn about the Moon Spirit so that he could find it. At the same time, he was also trying to find the Avatar and accused Zuko of being the Blue Spirit out of paranoia and to remove Zuko from competition, but Ozai dismissed his claim.
Later on, Zhao invaded and ravaged the Northern Water Tribe with the Fire Nation's forces, and successfully killed the Moon Spirit. But after Aang entered into his Avatar State, he destroyed the entire navy fleet of the Fire Nation in the battle. After being abandoned by Zuko and Iroh, a helpless Zhao was confronted by four waterbenders who trapped Zhao in a ball of water until he drowned.
