Zhong Hui is a minor villain in the Dynasty Warriors series and ultimately one of the final antagonists in the Jin campaign. A promising and exceedingly intelligent general of Wei, while he loyally served his kingdom Zhong Hui would ultimately only ever look out for himself. He would kill anyone in the way of his rise to power, including his own allies, and would even work with his enemies if it meant advancing himself further. He is the archenemy of Deng Ai and was personally responsible for his death.
History[]
Zhong Hui came to prominence in the final years of the great conflict during the Three Kingdoms era, serving the Kingdom of Wei. Brilliant in military strategy, he quickly rose through the ranks and became an elite general and personally partook in critical battles that would shape the land. As time passed, Zhong Hui would begin to grow great resentment towards those leading Wei, believing himself to be vastly superior and holding a severe grudge at what he thought was his potential being wasted. This lead to him framing honored veteran Deng Ai for serious crimes that would ultimately lead to his execution, the deaths of his sons, and the banishment of his family. With Deng Ai out of the way, Zhong Hui would officially turn traitor and abandon Wei, joining the final remnants of the Shu forces purely out of greed and his insatiable need to prove himself superior to everyone else. He would be killed during his revolt.
Personality[]
Zhong Hui was the definition of an egotistical, power hungry psychopath. He believed himself to be wholly superior to everyone and everything around him, and was almost completely incapable of accepting otherwise. Though he was greatly skilled in strategy, whenever his plans, even though rarely, fell through, he refused to accept any responsibility and would quickly put the blame on anyone other than himself. While he was not above seeing he made mistakes, he would always blow it off as a fluke, and while he did try to do better and improve, this was out of his overpowering need to prove his supremacy instead of actually taking it as a life lesson to learn from. He had no attachments to any of his countrymen, and personally held those in charge in contempt for what he believed was them suppressing his brilliance from truly shining. Being so young and in such a position of power, he greatly disliked the veterans who got to where they were from expansive battlefield experience and hardened through battles, believing them all to be brainless brutes. This at worst was seen in his treatment of Deng Ai, who he despised above all others and truly hated. Having him and his sons murdered in coldblood by framing them for treason, it is ironic that Zhong Hui used this scheme to instead commit treason himself, rebelling against Wei all just to prove that he was better than everyone. His endless and nigh infinite arrogance would ultimately get him killed.
