Ziard is a minor antagonist in The Dragon Prince.
He is one of the founding members of the dark magic art, to account for humanity's natural lack of magical abilities. Despite claiming to use the magic for feeding his people, he massacres and poaches the animal species of Xadia to absorb their life force and wield it, making him an enemy of the Elven and Dragon Kings of the nation.
He was voiced by Bryan Drummond.
Biography[]
Ziard was a citizen of Elarion who discovered dark magic, learning how to drain the life force of other beings for powerful effects and started stealing the life and magic of Xadian creatures for the power to protect his home. This made bitter enemies of the dragon and Elven rulers of the land, eventually leading to a confrontation with dragon king Sol Regem.
Regem gave Ziard an ultimatum to renounce dark magic, which Ziard refused, despite it costing the lives of the animals he poached, as humans were otherwise incapable of magic as far as Ziard knew. Regem proceeded to reveal he planned to destroy Elarion for Ziard's refusal, enraging Ziard, who blinds Regem, in the process being burnt alive by his fire breath, and leaving Elarion's inhabitants alive, but exiled from Xadia.
Personality[]
Not very much is known about Ziard's personality, as he only appears in one scene. However, he is heavily implied to be a morally complex person with a two-sided nature. On the one hand, he is shown to be ruthless and ambitious in that he willingly poached innocent magical creatures to harvest their essence to fuel his dark spells to gain power. He is also somewhat prideful and stubborn, as he is proud of his accomplishments and refuses to even consider the idea of abandoning dark magic, despite its corrupting nature.
However, Ziard is also shown to be caring and compassionate in the sense that his actions were primarily motivated by love and concern for his fellow humans. As he himself stated, his main reasons for using dark magic were to save his people from starvation, and an attempt to force the elves and dragons of Xadia to treat them as equals and not "second-class citizens." He was genuinely horrified when Sol Regem threatened to destroy Elarion, protesting that the city's countless inhabitants were innocent. Although he tried to dismiss the dragon's threat as a bluff in his unwillingness to abandon his power, as soon as Sol Regem tried to go through with the threat, Ziard bravely did everything he could in his attempts to stop him, ultimately perishing as a result.
Powers and Abilities[]
Ziard possesses a wide variety of magical abilities, primarily using energy beams as weapons and shields.

Trivia[]
- It is theorized by fans that Ziard is likely related to Lord Viren, as the latter uses the same magical staff. However, this theory has not been confirmed.
- In "Echoes of Thunder", Ziard was seen absorbing sunbirds, creatures with a symbiotic relationship with Sol Regem, with dark magic then unleashing a fireball. At the time, it appeared to be a simple evil grab for power. However, in "Sol Regem," it was revealed that he was actually trying to save his home city of Elarion.
