Zio is the secondary antagonist of Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium. He is a herald for the Dark Force.
Appearance[]
Zio has shoulder-length black hair and dresses in black robes over black armor.
Biography[]
After fighting monsters in the academy basement, Alys interrogates the principle about the tubes that spawned them, he confesses that a team found the tubes to study them several months ago and when the scientists he sent back to Birth Valley did not come back. The principle tried to send a rescue team, but Zio threatened to have him petrified if anyone tries to go there.
Later at Zema, it was discovered that the majority of the population was petrified thanks to Zio's magic. The heroes enter Birth Valley to try and find Holt where they find he and his assistants were petrified by Zio as well. The party heads to Molcum find the cure for the petrification, but find the town was burned to the ground.
Alys's old friend Rune was there to explain that Zio was behind the massacre and they need to head for Tonoe to procure it. The boulder that was blocking the tunnel was placed there to keep Zio and his underlings away from the town. After meeting Grandfather Dorin, Rune heads out with him while warning Alys and company not to fight Zio this early.
After the population of Zema was cured alongside Holt and his assistants, Holt suddenly goes missing, leading to the heroes to enter the Bio-Plant and finding that Rika was protecting him. They were greeted by Rika's creator Seed, a computer that was maintaining the Bio-Plant. But the monsters were getting out of control and the heroes need to head for Zio's fortress in order to save Demi. After the heroes escape, Seed destroys the Bio-Plant alongside himself to stop the creation of further violent monsters.
They arrive at Kadary where Zio leads a cult and his fortress is close by. After managing to defeat Juza, the heroes save Demi only for Zio to appear and use a magical barrier to prevent their attacks from harming him before summoning Dark Force to kill Chaz, forcing Alys to take the blast leading to her being placed on her death bed at Krup. Even when they meet Rune and procure the Psycho Wad needed to break Zio's barrier, Rune could not save Alys before she passes away.
The next day, the heroes head back to Zio's fort and infiltrate Nurvus in order to shut down and stabilize all systems. Before reaching the cre of Nurvus, Zio intervenes one last time to stop them. But they still use the Psyco Wand to break his barrier and eventually slay him. As he dissolves, Zio pleads for Dark Force to save him before he dies.
