Zodiark [ˈzoʊ.di.ɑːrk] is a powerful supernatural being in Final Fantasy XIV who commands the power of Darkness. He is the first primal, created by the Convocation of Fourteen to avert the Final Days. The Ascians worship Zodiark as their god, believing his restoration is necessary to destroy Hydaelyn and reunite the fragmented world.
History[]
Before Final Fantasy XIV[]
Zodiark, the first primal and the embodiment of Darkness, was summoned by the Convocation of Fourteen to prevent the Final Days, a cataclysm that threatened to unravel reality. To manifest him, half of Etheirys’s population was sacrificed, with the Convocation member Elidibus offering himself as Zodiark’s core.
Though Zodiark stabilized the world, the Convocation sought further sacrifices to restore Etheirys to its former state and eventually resurrect the sacrificed Ancients. Opposing this plan, Venat and her followers summoned Hydaelyn, who sundered both Zodiark and the world into fourteen fragments—the Source and its thirteen reflections. She then sealed Zodiark within Mare Lamentorum, the moon of the Source, to prevent his return.
Elidibus, Emet-Selch, and Lahabrea survived the Sundering, becoming the Ascian Paragons. They orchestrated the Umbral Calamities to rejoin the reflections to the Source, gradually restoring Zodiark's power.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn[]
The Ascians, led by Lahabrea, manipulated the Garlean Empire’s Legatus, Gaius van Baelsar, into using the Ultima Weapon to absorb the power of primals. This was intended to hasten Zodiark’s return. However, the Warrior of Light defeated Lahabrea, and the plan was thwarted. Zodiark’s emissary, Elidibus, later appeared before the Warrior of Light, hinting at the true nature of their conflict.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward[]
The Ascians attempted to instigate another Rejoining by escalating the Dragonsong War. Their plans led to the downfall of Lahabrea and Igeyorhm, significantly weakening their influence. Elidibus then recruited the Warriors of Darkness to force another calamity, but they too were defeated.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers[]
Emet-Selch revealed Zodiark’s origins, explaining that he was not a creator god but a primal summoned by the Ancients. He viewed Zodiark’s revival as the only way to restore the sundered world and the Ancients’ lost civilization. However, Fandaniel, an Ascian with a nihilistic agenda, sought Zodiark’s destruction instead.
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]
Fandaniel and Zenos Galvus traveled to the moon to break Zodiark’s final seals. The Warrior of Light attempted to stop them, but Zenos shattered the last seal. Fandaniel merged with Zodiark, forcing the Warrior of Light into battle. After Zodiark’s defeat, Fandaniel ensured his complete destruction, triggering the Final Days once again.
Although Zodiark’s remaining aether was believed lost, fragments persisted in the Thirteenth reflection, where Golbez later harnessed them to create the voidsent Zeromus.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Zodiark's original form is depicted as a towering, crowned humanoid figure with upside-down wings, resembling the Ivalician Esper of the same name. His influence is symbolized by dark crystals, which appear in visions associated with him.
In Endwalker, Zodiark's bound form is a massive, six-armed figure with red skin and a mask adorned with an "X" symbol. When awakened in The Dark Inside, he appears as a purple giant with barbed roots for legs, missing some of his limbs from the battle against Hydaelyn. His shattered mask reveals a resemblance to Chaos, the final boss of the original Final Fantasy, evoking Yoshitaka Amano’s signature artwork.
Personality[]
Zodiark’s true personality is ambiguous. As a primal, he was shaped by the will of the Ancients who summoned him. According to Emet-Selch, Zodiark tempered his creators upon being summoned, but this claim is debated. Livingway, a Loporrit, suggests that the Ancients’ mastery over aetherial creation would have limited such an effect.
Without Elidibus, Zodiark’s will was purely instinctual, driven by the collective desire of the souls within him. The Ascians viewed him as the world’s rightful guardian, while Hydaelyn’s followers saw him as a dangerous force that had to be sealed away.
Gameplay[]
The Dark Inside[]
Zodiark is fought as the first trial boss of Endwalker in The Dark Inside. His mechanics revolve around manipulating light and darkness, using devastating AoE attacks that test player positioning and reaction times.
Extreme Mode: The Minstrel’s Ballad: Zodiark’s Fall[]
An extreme-difficulty version of the fight features enhanced mechanics and more punishing damage checks.
