Zombies are the main antagonists of All of Us Are Dead. They are zombified living beings infected with the Jonas Virus, which was created by Dr. Lee Byeong-chan with the intention of removing fear from humanity.
History[]
Feeling unable to protect his son from bullies, Lee Byeong-chan infected his son with a virus in hopes of him overcoming his fear and fight back the bullies. Instead, he became a feral zombie and attacked his mother. Later, Byeong-chan experimented on a zombified mouse, who managed to infect a student named Kim Hyeon-ju, so he forced her into quarantine. She managed to escape, resulting in the infection of the nurse at Hyosan High. The nurse then went on to infect Park Chang-hoon and the two were able to quickly spread the virus at Hyosan High School and eventually the entire city. During the outbreak, it is known three students that became half-bies: Min Eun-ji, Yoon Gwi-nam, and Choi Nam-ra.
Eventually, Hyosan was bombed, so most of the zombies were killed.
Transformation[]
The virus infects individuals who are bitten by zombies. It can also happen if zombie blood is inserted in an open wound. Once the virus is in the body, the host's temperature usually drops. The infected individual often has a nosebleed. As the infection reaches their eyes, the eyes as well as the vision of the host turns red and nearby blood vessels become visible on the face. Some zombies are also seen with blisters on their skin, such as Kim Ji-min and Min-jae.
The virus usually causes the heart to stop, killing the host. In case the host dies, only the virus survives and it will stimulate the brain stem, animating the corpse. This was demonstrated with Min-ji, who had a cardiac arrest after she got infected and quickly died of the virus. However, this does not happen with half-bies. The half-bies do not show any of the severe effects of the virus, so the host is able to live and co-exist with the infection. Half-bies do have some mild symptoms, which are turned on and off with time.
Half-bies[]
Half-bies or Hambies are zombie hybrids, hosts who were infected but retain their consciousness, as they were not killed by the virus. Instead, they gain enhanced strength as well as other zombie powers and become pratically immortal. This happens because of a mutation in the Jonas Virus that allows it to co-exist with the human mind. This seems to occur with individuals who had no fear while getting infected.
Half-bies have the advantage of never getting attacked by zombies and are only noticed by them if they make noises.
Weaknesses[]
As they have enhanced audition, zombies react to noises, especially of higher frequencies, reacting most strongly to 24 kHz. Most zombies are attracted by these noises of higher frequencies, making them run towards the sound. At the same time, frequencies too high or low are very painful to half-bies. As result, half-bies become vulnerable during thunderstorms. The rain is also too loud for them. In addition to this, because of their enhanced sense of smell, the rain causes the zombies' senses to become dulled as the scents are mixed together. According to Nam-ra, for some reason, the rain also causes her to feel physically weak despite her having enhanced strength.
As seen with Nam-ra, another weakness specific to half-bies is that, despite having their consciousness, they have difficult to control themselves if they don't eat living flesh. This seems to get worse over time, especially if the half-bie spends time around uninfected individuals and gets constantly tempted to eat them due to the hunger caused by the partial infection. If the half-bie keeps rejecting to eat, their hunger makes them temporary lose control over their own actions and they might even attack their allies.
Killing a zombie[]
Because most zombies are corpses that only move because the virus stimulates the brain stem, they are invulnerable to pain and will continue to move even with major injures, unless a weak spot is hit. Zombies are usually killed if they have the back of their necks stabbed or broken, indicating that their weakness is the medulla oblongata, which is the lower part of the brain stem, and the spinal cord. Shooting zombies in the forehead as demonstrated by Nam So-ju, is proven to be effective in killing them, showing that the frontal lobe of the brain is a weak spot too. Falling from a high place seems to kill I-sak after she turned and the explosion caused by military bombs was also able to eliminate a great amount of zombies simultaneously.
However, it is currently not known for sure how half-bies are killed. After becoming a half-bie, Gwi-nam survived being stabbed in the nape by an arrow of the archer Min-jae, who had killed several zombies this way alongside Ha-ri and knew where the weak spot is. Gwi-nam also fell from highs several times, including from the roof of the school, and survived all instances, despite suffering major injuries that he was soon able to regenerate from. Later on, another half-bie, Nam-ra, also casually jumps from the roof. The only occasion that half-bies are completely burned by fire is when Gwi-nam and Cheong-san (a possible half-bie at that point) are caught by the explosion of the military bombs, but it is unknown if the two of them survived because their corpses are not shown. Thus, it is unknown if fire can kill a half-bie. As any of the other methods do not apply to them, they seem to have different weaknesses.
