~ Peter Parker/Spider-Man about the zombies. |
The Zombies are the titular main antagonists of the What If...? episode "What If... Zombies?!" and the upcoming animated spin-off Disney+ series, Marvel Zombies.
They come from an alternate universe where Janet van Dyne was infected by a Quantum virus. When Hank Pym brought her back from the Quantum Realm, she had already infected him. Afterwards they ended up infecting almost the entire world.
History[]
Hope van Dyne and Scott Lang helped Hope's dad Hank Pym with his trip into the Quantum Realm in order to rescue his wife Janet van Dyne. It had been thirty years since she disappeared. When Hank found Janet, it turned out the Janet had been infected by a quantum virus which had turned her into a zombie. She attacked Hank who also turned into a zombie. As soon as they returned to the Earthly Plane, they attacked both Hope van Dyke and Scott Lang, turning Scott into a zombie whereas Hope escaped. Within hours the virus spread all over America turning all infected into Zombies. It really went bad when The Avengers turned up to fight the threat, they lost the fight and turned into zombies themselves.
After two weeks Bruce Banner fell in the Sanctum Sanctorum to warn everyone about the coming of Thanos, but there were no one there to meet him except for Doctor Strange’s Cloak oOf Levitation. As Bruce walked out into the street, he saw how the neighborhood had been abandoned. Then Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian from Thanos’ Black Order landed in search of an Infinity Stone as it happened in Infinity War.
Soon thereafter, Bruce saw Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, and Wong as they attack Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian. At first Bruce was excited to see his friends win over Thanos's minions so easily, but as he discovered that they also bite the enemies, it became obvious to be that something was very wrong. They were all turned into zombies! Fortunately Hope van Dyne, her ants, the cloak of Levitation and Peter Parker arrived at that moment and saved Bruce from being infected by the zombie virus.
It later emerges that Happy Hogan, Bucky Barnes, Okoye, Kurt, and Sharon Carter have not been infected by the virus as well. The group then decided to travel to Camp Lehigh in New Jersey in hope for a cure against the virus, because they have received a message from another survivor. As they tried to start a train to go to Camp Lehigh, Hank Hogan got infected with the virus from Clint Barton, but Sharon killed him. At the same time Sam Wilson attacked Barnes and Okoye but they managed to kill him.
Just as all the zombies started to surround the group got the train running, but Sharon heard a sound from the roof of the train. It was Steve Rogers who then attacked and infected Sharon. Barnes ran to help Sharon only to be too late and be forced to fight his best friend, Barnes ends up cutting Rogers in two with Rogers' own shield. At the same time van Dyne defeated Sharon by exploding her body. Unfortunately, she had a cut in her suit and were therefore infected by the virus when she got covered with Sharon as she exploded. The transformation into zombie were not as quick as the others probably because of the way she were infected.
Suddenly the train came to a hold just outside Camp Lehigh because in had run out of fuel. Then van Dyne did one last heroic act, growing to a giant and thereby being able to help the others inside the cam where they are safe. The group are puzzled as they discover how no of all the zombies surrounding the camp were trying to come inside. It turned out is were because of the radiation from Visions Mind Stone. Vision had also cured Scott Lang or at least his head which now spread out his jokes from inside a glass. The group then decided that they could use the stone to cure everyone if they went to Wakada. There they could use a satellite to send the stone's frequencies out to the global population.
Vision did not seem happy about them coming to the camp, and Barnes discovered why as he found T'Challa laying a stretcher with only one leg. At the same time as T'Challa told Barnes that they had walked into a trap, Barnes discovers Zombie Maximoff. Vision had rescued T'Challa only to use him a food to keep Maximoff calm. Her powers were to strong and therefore she could not be cured by the Mind Stone. He had not had in him to kill her and had instead feed her with survivors. Maximoff, who had not been eating for days kills Kurt and Okoye. Vision then helped the remaining group escape, told them where they could find a Quadjet, and the he took out the Mind Stone as a way to make amends for his sins by not killing Maximoff. Maximoff became filled with grief and at the same time all the zombies outside the camp started attacking now the Mind Stone no longer were active. As Maximoff attacked Barnes he turned into Hulk. He then decided to rescue the rest the group by running out to all the zombies. As the Quadjet flied away, Hulk attacked Maximoff. Only because T'Challa could use the boosters on the Quadjet, they get away from a zombified van Dyne.
Now as Peter Parker, Scott Lang and T'Challa were flying to Wakanda, they were humanity's last hope. What they didn't know was that a zombified Thanos was waiting for them in Wakanda with the five stones in his gauntlet. It's unknown if Peter, Scott and T'Challa managed to restore humanity or if they fell against Thanos and the zombies, as the Watcher acknowledged that there may still be hope for such universe. As for any possible hope, it should be noted that Thor, the Guardians of the Galaxy (minus Gamora) and Captain Marvel are still out there in outer space, so the galaxy will stay safe as long they aren't infected.
