Zombies are the main antagonists of the live action South Korean film Train to Busan and Peninsula. They are humans that are infected with an unnamed bio-engineered virus, which become extremely violent and act as a vector to spread the virus by biting others. There is no evidence that they actually eat the people they bite. The closer the bite is to the head, the faster the transformation.
Information[]
Much like most zombies in horror fiction, Zombies from Train to Busan are infected humans transformed into cannibalistic monsters that are driven by the instinct to attack and infect other non-infected humans. Their infection is transmitted through bites or scratches and also through contaminated water supply. Like rabies, the advancement of the infection depends on how close the bite wound is to the brain.
Zombies in Train to Busan appears to be only driven by the means to spread their infection rather than feed on human host. The first notable symptoms of the infection is the victim having pale skin and their eyes becoming grayish. Victims will show mental deterioration as the infection slowly progress through the brain. If the infection has advanced throughout the brain, the infected victim will suffer from twitching and convulsions, before successfully turning into a zombie. When a zombie senses its victim, their first response is to aggressively pursue their target until they have captured or turned them successfully. Virtually nothing aside from death can stop a zombie from chasing their prey, as they will relentlessly pursue their victim even with their limbs crippled.
Zombies have poor vision, as darkness can easily conceal their victims, making them stand idly. They rely primarily on echolocation to track down prey as even a ringtone of a cellphone can easily distract them.
Biography[]
Little is known about origin of the virus that caused the zombie outbreak from Busan or how it actually spread from its Patient Zero. The virus was created by the Biotech company and resulted from a contaminated water supply. The first known infected animal was a deer which was seemingly killed by a passing truck, although it reanimated. How the zoonotic virus has spread from its first host is unknown.
The virus made its way to its first human host, spreading from person to person throughout Seoul then the rest of the cities of South Korea, with Busan becoming the last city remaining.
The earliest known infected human was an unnamed woman who run into the train past the security. As an attendant tries to confront the infected woman, she became infected and attacked the attendant, causing the infection to spread throughout the KTX 101 in Seoul which en route to Busan.

Trivia[]
- The virus that created the zombies from Train to Busan is similar to the t-Virus from Resident Evil franchise, both viruses can infect animals as well as can be transmitted through contaminated water. Although the differences are Resident Evil zombies have poor motor ability.
- They are also similar to the The Infected from Left 4 Dead series as both zombies are highly mobile and can sprint to their targets. Unlike Train to Busan, the Left 4 Dead infected does not attack by biting but rather clawing or punching a non-infected human, although they attack by biting in The Sacrifice comic.
